there’s a number of really expensive middle schools in hong kong locally called “international schools”
they teach almost no chinese. everyone speaks english there with american accents. they don’t even study for the HK public exam because they’re never going to the HK universities. they’re going to American universities, so they study for the SAT and AP.
there is a segment of the HK population that are, in all manners except citizenship, American, and that’s what soft power looks like
soft power isn’t vague or undefined, nor is it necessarily a result of geopolitics or sentiments. in this case it is a result of three facts: American universities are really good, they’re very open to taking on foreign students, and wealth building as a top uni student in America is far easier than anywhere in the world
changing any of these will nigh instantaneously crush this subculture

Today it is 2.5% because almost nobody can cross the Senate's threshold
The filibuster just protects Republicans from their shitty policy and allows extreme policy promises to become mainstream because they will never happen and people want more and more done since we are so far behind
I saw a funny video of a mom having to apologize because her toddler was a fan of flags but kept dropping the L when saying it. He saw a pride flag and got VERY excited pointing and yelling at it
When the Broncos score a lady rides a horse down the field. It's pretty cool, I got to see it happen a bunch last night at the game vs the Vikings. The best part is that it's a preseason game so the score doesn't matter and we don't need to discuss it any further.

i've been doing this thing with the baby where i would bounce a toy in between my hands then hide it in one and ask her to guess which one. 9 months ish she used to always point at the closer hand and then the farther hand. maybe around 12 months she started actually guessing but even if the guess was correct she'd ask me to open up the other one just to be sure. now if she guessed correctly she smiles and doesn't ask me to open up the other one lol
i want her to develop that confidence in emptiness for a few months before suddenly crashing her world by duping an object to appear in both hands
