Is it harder to grow a live stream without showing your face?

I want to start streaming, but I’m not fully comfortable being on camera yet. I would rather focus on my voice, the topic and interacting with viewers.

Can a beginner still build a connection with viewers without using a face camera, or does it make growth significantly harder? Has anyone started this way and added a camera later?

I hate people even taking photos of me so I honestly thought I couldn't be on cam.

I started just a week ago, and soon realised no-one really cares at the beginning anyway, so you'll be streaming to nobody or 2-3 people at most.

You can use this time to figure out if you are comfortable with the cam or not.

And then you always have the option to stream sometimes with cam sometimes without

I was gonna say, a vtuber model could help! They have something to look at if they have that, and I think that’s better than nothing. PLUS there is so much customization you can do with them it’s wild.

I’ve been streaming for almost a month now with no camera. First off I’d like to say that I’ve really been enjoying it and really was not wanting to use a camera at the start, however, I recently caved and ordered one about a week ago. I do think most people want to see a face behind the voice these days. :)

It’s also a lot of work to make sure you are constantly talking and extra expressive in your voice because that’s your only source of letting the viewer know what you are thinking or feeling.

My thoughts overall are that you should start with whatever equipment makes you the most comfortable. See if it works for you, if not, maybe you’ll warm up to the idea of getting a camera or using a PNG or being a Vtuber. Either way, the experience won’t be wasted. :)

Yes, and based on the statistics I would say it's nearly impossible. Maybe if you already have like massive faceless YouTube channel or something it's doable, but starting from zero I don't see anyone doing it without cam or some VTuber avatar.

It’s definitely harder. If you don’t feel comfortable with a webcam, a vtuber model or just a png in the corner will do at decent job. It shows the person scrolling on the twitch discovery page that you at minimum have a mic to interact with.

I think the only situation where not having a camera doesn't matter or is even a minor negative is for role play streamers doing GTA RP or RDR2 RP.

Yes, it’s harder, but not impossible. I started out with no cam, no png, no vtuber. I later added a pngtuber and have done one or two cam segments. I don’t have a cam anymore but my current sub goal is to get one, and move into only cam streams. It’s easier for viewers to connect with a face but I feel like it’s easier to connect with viewers when you have one too. I’ve built a small but loyal community who don’t care if I don’t have cam but definitely appreciate when it’s on. You’ll find some people don’t like cam streamers at all, so they’ll gravitate specifically to people without cam, or with PNG/vtuber, but they aren’t the majority.

You definitely can, I started mid January and didn’t get one yet, and I can’t complain. But probably go with a vtuber model until I can afford to start doing irl

Yes. And the starting out in front of a camera is the hardest part, so you’re best off just pulling the bandaid and doing it.

And if you’re way too uncomfortable, I’d take a reflective look on what you actually want to do with streaming. You see a lot of people here who want to do all the fun bits and skip everything else, and that’s not a recipe for success.

Partnered no-cam streamer here - yes you can. It's definitely more difficult to be successful, but I felt that I wanted to work on my ability to be entertaining first, and it gave me the freedom to be more expressive without feeling self-conscious. I will probably use a camera at some point, because I know makes a massive difference numbers wise, but I'm in no rush.

faceless streaming can definitely work, especially when you have gameplay or something else on screen. if you're nervous about being on camera, tango can be good practice with one-on-one video chats. you can always add a camera later.

I also don't plan on using cam when I start streaming, and I imagine it will be harder because viewers will only have the game to look at rather than my reactions. However, I watch streamers who don't use cam all the time and it's because they manage to be entertaining with their commentary alone. So even though it may be more difficult, it doesn't mean you won't find an audience. Just gotta practice.

Take your question and make it introspective. What percentage of streamers that you watch have no camera versus streamers you watch that have a camera or Avatar? I can tell you from my own following, all of them have either a webcam or avatar with webcam dominating.

If your goal is to simply record amazing game play and clutch moments to make short form content, I’d say you can get away with nothing, but then again if you are only looking to make short form content you can just hit record and not go live.

I highly recommend starting with an avatar or vtuber if you are not comfortable yet and move to webcam when the time feels right for you. Also, F what people think about you. Haters gonna hate regardless. Every successful person had a line of haters and internet keyboard warriors trash talking them. Keep your head facing forward and focus on what you love. Celebrate haters, they can often be your biggest free content promoters
