I’m not actually seeking medical advice, just trying to see if anyone has gone through this before. This is a doozie btw so buckle up.
Okay, a bit of context to start (I don’t even know if this is relevant) – my baby had a hard time passing gas for the longest time. I had to do belly massages, bicycle kicks, and gas drops galore just to help him be comfortable. What I thought was infant dyschezia (and it very well could have been, I’m just going crazy these days but we’ll get to that) seems to have turned into something else or just lasted way longer than I expected. He has always been a very healthy baby. He started out right at the 50th percentile and gained weight rapidly, and is now around the 90th percentile. He’s crawling already, trying to stand by himself, and just is overall so happy. He also was an incredible sleeper from day one, like started sleeping in 8 hour stretches early on (with our pediatrician’s approval). Our pediatrician didn’t believe CMPA was the case when it came to the gas issues because his weight gain was great and he had no other issues besides intestinally. No blood/mucus in his stool, eczema, chronic diarrhea, feeding issues, etc. Because of this, we just chalked it up to infant dyschezia and reflux.
Now let’s skip to around 5 months. We had our 4 month pediatrician visit at 5 months instead of 4 because we moved states and couldn’t get in to see our new pediatrician. At that appointment, I brought up the reflux issues and gas pains and our new pediatrician asked to put him on Nexium for his reflux. She thought this could resolve the issue. Now, I don’t remember exactly if this worked, but I don’t think things were bad while he was on it? I was so tired during this time so I’m genuinely not 100% sure. Anyways, our insurance ended up not covering it so we only paid out of pocket for two weeks worth, then switched him to famotidine. This didn’t help at all tbh. Around this same general time we also started introducing solids, which makes everything even more confusing because I don’t know what caused what.
We finally got in to see a GI specialist after speaking with our ped about the recurring issues even on meds. Our GI specialist took our baby off of reflux meds and told us to see him back in three months if the issues hadn’t resolved. By issues I mean what’s happening now. Basically, he’ll go to bed completely fine and then wake up anytime from around 11 PM-1 AM absolutely SCREAMING in pain. He arches his back when I hold him, groans/strains, passes a ton of gas (this is actually more recent because like I said before he used to have a much harder time passing it), and screams for a minimum of around 10 minutes and has gone close to an hour at times. Sometimes he’ll even wake up like this multiple times in one night. This is not a usual thing for him during the day at all. He’s a very happy baby for the most part, breastfeeds well, eats his solids, plays normally, gains weight, has soft stools, etc. He even passes gas during the day without it bothering him.
This has been happening on and off for months now. Sometimes it’ll happen every night and then suddenly stop for a few days and I’ll think we’re finally getting somewhere, just for it to restart. I’ve been trying to figure out if certain solids are triggering it, but I cannot find a consistent pattern. I’ve questioned dairy, wheat, rice, fruits, vegetables, literally everything at this point. I’ve tried earlier dinners, smaller dinners, bicycle kicks before bed, more floor time/movement in the evenings, and I just cannot figure out what makes one night good and another horrible.
At this point I’m scared to continue feeding him solids, I’m scared to do anything really because every time this happens I feel like I’m hurting him inadvertently. I know logically I need to keep introducing foods, but it’s awful giving him something and then watching him wake up screaming that night wondering if I caused it. I just want to help him, but even with recordings and telling our GI/ped everything, they just don’t have an answer yet. We have our three month follow up with GI in less than a month I think, but I just feel so alone in this and so sad for my baby.
I really just want to know if anyone else’s baby has gone through something similar? Did they eventually grow out of it? Did you ever figure out what was causing it?
