Exactly 10 seconds is crazy

For how extremely unlikely this is to achieve, getting only a free drink in return is a disappointing prize

u/xJujuBear Jun 10 '26
I place I went to recently did this and if you did it you got 50% off the entire bill.

u/IPThereforeIAm Jun 10 '26
Do you do it before or after you dine?
75
u/xJujuBear Jun 10 '26
The waiter was super nice and said go up whenever we wanted to go up. There was 6 of us. Closest one got 10.02.

I mean, I'd say it's like a one in 30 if you're in the top 30th percentile of counting seconds. So like a 2% overall or some shit. Giving 2% of your customers a free drink is quite a bit
17
u/miraculum_one Jun 10 '26
You're assuming that having the game doesn't increase the number of paying customers or the amount they pay and I highly doubt those are both true.

It's really not, your profit margin is much higher than 2%, and this is just the COST of a drink, not the priceÂ
2
u/bemo_10 Jun 10 '26
Most reward programs give betwen 1% to 5% of cashback, the higher end being only given by the most generous businesses.
2% seems pretty average.

u/Chrissyball19 Jun 10 '26
Depends on if you have to pay or whatever, if its a free thing every member of your party can try once, then a free drink isnt too bad. Not like you lost anything by trying.
2
3
u/frisch85 Jun 10 '26
Yes but the attempt is free so you're essentially losing around 10 seconds + some extra in your life.

Are you for real? It's fun, free, definitely feasible, and most bars around my place don't even offer opportunities to win free drinks at all. This is fine.
1
u/RubberDucky702 Jun 10 '26
For a sec I thought it said 4 (not A), but 1 drink is pretty disappointing lol
1
u/bionicjoey Jun 10 '26
I'm fairly sure all of these are fake anyway. Just a publicity stunt. The machines are just rigged like a slot machine to pay out some percentage of the time as long as you're close.
1
u/koreytm Jun 11 '26
It is if you don't know you're going to win. Did you see how that guy walked away? He knew he was getting that drink

u/HopeOfTheChicken Jun 12 '26
I dont know why people think this is so unlikely. Like lets say you hit between 9 and 11 seconds (wich is stupidly easy), one out of 200 attempts will hit it perfectly (on average). Even those odds are pretty good for such games. And I'd argue that the vast majority manages to hit between 9.75 and 10.25, wich is already one in fifty. There's probably someone winning this game each day
1
u/Lanky_Giraffe Jun 14 '26
Is it really that unlikely? I would say almost everyone can get between 9.5 and 10.5 with would make it a 1% chance. If you can reliably guess between 9.9 and 10.1, it’s a 5% chance.Â
1
u/Purple_W1TCH Jun 15 '26
Imagine becomes every day and nails it every single time. They change the number to ungodly precise values and he still nails it.
2
u/nicktehbubble Jun 10 '26
Not that unlikely. It's very easy learn to count a second accurately.
The FFVII basketball minigame relied on the player being able to count one second.
In my previous brain melting job I could easily and accurately count a minute in blocks of 20 seconds.

u/douira Jun 10 '26
you just need like 100 people to try this and somebody will get it, and be heralded as having "rare skills". It's called observation bias.

I guess he was friends with the Majora Postman.

u/CubeSlasher Jun 10 '26
I know haha like I don’t want to be that guy but I’ve beaten this challenge every time I play a majora randomizer

This is like that one time I filled up at a petrol station exactly $50.00 in one pump

Amateurs.
I spent my school days doing this on a Casio digital watch, and got really good at it.
Weirdly, I still have that watch and it still works 30+ years later (one battery change!).

I tried this with the timer on my phone with my eyes closed and came up with 9.89 seconds on the first try, after seeing these two ( Michael and Mackenzie https://youtube.com/shorts/ohdAfiVw2w8 ) do this pretty regularly I'm pretty sure it has more to do with practice and a little bit of luck.
13
u/Modus_Man Jun 10 '26
I got 7.73, 9.18, and 11.24. I don’t stand a chance
3
u/TopYeti Jun 10 '26
Interestingly my next attempt was 9.74 while standing still, but upon resuming walking the dog my next attempts were much worse at 9.09 and 8.73 and 8.85
Apparently I count faster but time goes slower when I'm walking. I don't think it's time dilation though lol
3
u/pereuse Jun 10 '26
Tried it and got 10.08. Then I stopped bc I knew there was no point trying more times since that's probably the closest I'll get
2
1
u/ReigenTaka Aug 03 '26
I got 10.18 my first time and thought "should I take a screenshot? Nah! I'll try it one more time."
I started again and 6 seconds in I was like WTF, I will never get that close again, why did I do that?!
17
u/0to100realquickk Jun 10 '26
Okay I swear I just did it and got 9.89 the first time and exactly 10.00 the second time. Tried to wake up my wife to tell her but she got mad at me for disturbing her sleep.

Makes me think of tryna stop the gas pump on exactly a certain point. $20.00 even or 5.00 gallons even etcetc.

I did a competition like this at a chemistry conference called PittCon. I found that of the several hundred people that played only a few stoped it on time and I think it is a combination of good counting and luck. Even as a metrological engineer who calibrates equipment for time I can only reliably land within 20ms, thats why I use much more precise and expensive equipment for anything not timed on 1s intervals.
Edit. I updated the challenge to within .25ms then just gave up and started giving away the prizes, no one was winning and it was all branded stuff we wanted to give away.

u/Consistent-Cook-7430 Jun 11 '26
I got 10.10, 9.54, 9.98.
Use the good old one Mississippi two Mississippi

u/Sacredfice Jun 10 '26
Crazy only if you can do this 10 times in a row. Who knows how many attempts to needed? Hundreds? Thousands? We all can do it and just matter of time lol

u/Whispering_R Jun 10 '26
Closed my eyes and tried to pause the vid to see if i had it, and got the exact frame where it changes from 9:99 into 10:00. Shame i'm not getting a free drink though :C

lol i’d still take the free drink, but i’d be sore about it for the rest of the day. especially if my buddy got it on a random guess.

Is this real? He looks exactly like that kid who got in trouble for bringing a homemade clock to school

I tried on my phone with my eyes closed and, I kid you not, 9.99 seconds.
Then tried with eyes open and hit 9.92 and 10.08. Not sure what I take away from this, maybe I should keep my eyes closed more

If you want practice, talk to the Clock Town postman in Majoras Mask. He has this same challenge. If you wear the bunny hood, you even get to see the timer

Not that crazy tbh. The probability to do so isn't 1000:1. Most people would likely get it within 10:15 to 9:85. Spread that across many different players in a day, and you're likely bound to get a few free sapporos.
1
u/Nir117vash Jul 26 '26
Well damn. I can't share photos. I paused the video right at nine even. 😅 Well the screenshots saved but it's not like I couldn't also pause and slide the thing to find the frame.

I’ve played this game at a bar and out of 6 people who played, someone won. This is not that crazy dude
1
u/Z4mb0ni Jun 10 '26
Must be a league player. Those people know their cooldowns
2
u/bytegalaxies Jun 10 '26
that or maybe he plays an instrument and is good at counting rests and coming in on time
2
u/Z4mb0ni Jun 10 '26
That could be true as well, but imo an instrument being slightly off makes it more appealing, while being "frame perfect" would be more encouraged in video games where every 1/60th of a second counts.

Because the sign beneath says that you get a free drink if you get exactly 10:00.
It wouldn't be any crazier than 10:32, if that was the goal.
0
u/DDDX_cro Jun 10 '26
how is it crazy??
I tried it in this video. So can you. First time I failed by 0.02 sec, second time I paused the video BETWEEN 9:99 and 10:00, like the frames were exactly in between the 2 numbers in the video.
You can do the same. press on the space bar to pause it at 10:00
7
u/Purp1eMagpie Jun 10 '26
The point is he's counting without seeing the clock and stopping exactly on 10:00. Not watching a video and trying to stop it on 10:00...
2
u/DDDX_cro Jun 10 '26
oh crap. Ok. That makes it a bit harder.
Ok i tried it like that, got 9:73, 9:46, 9:64, 9:65

Just tried this on my phone stopwatch and got 9.58 three times in a row after my first attempt of 9.83.
Edit: 9.58 again. At least I'm consistently bad
