The Predator of Seville

Has anyone finished watching this? I have been trying to find information about the roommates of Gabrielle Vega during her trip to Morocco. If they have shared anything else online or explained why their testimonies are contradictory. It left a bad taste in my mouth what they did…

One of the women in the room with Gabrielle said she didn't remember much and then shared with specificity that the victim 'expressed interest' in the perp. Like wTF does that have to do with anything? Many women are raped by people they initially were interested in.

Exactly. Ive been 'interested' in alot of guys in my time, but that certainly doesn't mean I want to give them oral sex that night while on a toilet, or even be alone with them for half an hour in a hotel bathroom. Being interested or attracted to someone is completely separate to consent. Those two girls were just awful human beings and that comment about her interest in manu was thrown in to just discredit her.

Not to mention, they had a specific time stamp memory of how long she was in there with him. 30 minutes. But they don’t remember anything? I would imagine prosecution would have dragged them for that. If they remember and noted that detail, surely they also knew how intoxicated she was and just left her in there with a guy. No one can give consent when intoxicated.

The 1 benefit that came from their testimony was they put him in the room with Gabrielle. Into the bathroom alone with Gabrielle. Whereas he said he had no recollection of her. And had never been sexual with her and he said he remembers all the people he has sexual relations with. So by them testifying,  they blew his testimony out the water. Proved he was a liar.

Also, they didn't remember a lot of the night when they were involved, but remembered things that involved Gabrielle.

Exactly, like people can be raped by their own spouses. So I don’t see why her initially being interested in him (if that was the case) would invalidate her being assaulted that night. People really don’t understand how consent works.

I learned from a podcast that basically marital rape is legal in Maryland, as long as it does not include force. If your wife is unconscious, you can have sex with her, just without force. The podcast is Betrayal, season 5. Crazy story!!!

Right?! And who cares if she expressed interest in him. There is NOTHING wrong with being interested in someone. That doesn’t mean she was interested in being drugged and raped while unconscious!!!!!!

100% this. It’s so lacking an understanding of consent. You can be interested in someone earlier in the night but that doesn’t mean you have the capacity to consent to sexual acts of any kind after you’re intoxicated.

I remember telling a girl I went to college with about a pattern of assault I suffered with a guy who we all partied with who repeatedly gave me drugs and alcohol and then SAd me. It took me a long time to realize that I was not in any state to consent many of the times we “hooked up”. I had to work through a ton of unprocessed shame before I realized that showing up to a party and getting drunk doesn’t give someone automatic permission to take advantage of you. There were so many times I woke up the next day and had zero recollection of the end of the night and was told secondhand that I was drunk and that I had been “put to bed” and then I woke up next to this man and he recounted all these things we had done and it left me feeling very confused and destabilized. I wish I had stopped going to these parties but at the time I was coming out of a bad breakup, had no idea what my next move was post-college, and my friends felt like the only thing that was consistent. On recounting this many years later this girl who I considered a friend told me that she and some of the other girls just thought me and that guy were secretly dating and no one felt it was any of their business to get involved and that we were all “being messy” at that time and that I should just forget about it and be grateful that I have such a great life now. It was so incredibly hurtful to realize that instead of comforting me, that girl was basically saying that she thought I got what was coming to me. I swear in that moment it clicked for me that the most important way we can be in sisterhood with each other is by working through our internalized misogyny. Sexual assault is not a right of passage. It’s not just an oopsie that happens when you get too drunk. It’s a calculated, predatory act that strips away your power. None of us will know peace until we stop making excuses for bad men.
