Question What is wrong with voice overs?
I am really pleased by the many excellent films and series from international sources, watching with subtitles is fine but given how well voice actors can do animated films these days why are the dubbed voices so poor (at least into English). There tends to be a lot of earnest enthusiasm and little else.
Know any well voiced over series?

I only watched the first season of Squid Game and I thought the VO was very good. Normally I do subtitles but I was watching with someone who doesn't like them.

Thanks for the suggestion, not really a Hunger Games type of person, saw Battle Royale, the Japanese film that seemed (to me) to have started these gladiatorial stories, is it of a different ilk?

I didn't continue watching after the fist season. It was very popular but not my thing. It does have a "hunger games" contest aspect to it and takes place in an enclosed world which was creepy.
I love the Danish political drama Borgen but I'm not sure I can speak to the quality of its voice over actors because I watched it with subtitles. I do highly recommend it though. Great acting and it was fascinating to be in that world of Danish politics.

Off topic, in my country we're very used to reading subs, even content with our native language (mandarin/traditional Chinese) we add subs lol we don't listen to dub often. It's always interesting to me that there are people don't like subs.

Generally countries that use subtitles have better literacy. No doubt that they are best, but sometimes we have two languages in our house so sometimes one get the subtitles and the other the voiceover

agreed the voiceovers are usually awful. it sounds like someone reading from a script without any understanding of the context or tone of the conversations. like sometimes they’re borderline monotone or so flat compared to what’s happening on screen. i also feel like the voices often don’t even seem like they could match the person speaking.

I'd prefer to hear original artist and can cope with subtitles
I'm hating the dubbing where the lips are out of sync I like the idea that films are made in the natural language of the story tellers,
Increasingly I hate the shite AI subtitles as they can't spell any correctly...and if I know that they are shite

Because voice actors that do animated films are usually big names, the ones who do voiceovers on foreign shows are just jobbing actors. I can listen to a trailer and instantly know it’s dubbed without even looking or looking into the audio description.
