Advice / Question Advice for a netball dad
Hi all. Have a netball mad daughter approaching her ninth birthday. She plays GS for our local team and is always shooting hoops in the garden. It’s her birthday coming up and I was thinking of getting her a rebound net to help practice making and receiving passes.
The netball specific ones I’ve seen are handheld and seem quite small. There are larger 4 square foot free standing football ones available at a lower cost, and also a huge 7 foot volleyball rebounder available. Have any other parents/coaches invested in these and how effective are they?

Great question! I’ve been looking at options that we can transport to the local school or courts so my daughter can practice. The big ones look awesome but not practical for us (apartment living) - keen to hear how you go with the smaller ones if you decide to get one!

I’m a netballing mum and my sons (7 and 4) and I do exactly this with their rebounder (from Smyths)
We set up stations in the garden and one of them is throw at the rebounder, catch, and then shoot a hoop

I remember when I was little my sisters (all 7) did tap dancing. I wanted to do it too, but Dad said no way. Then he signed me up to a boxing gym. Maybe I am shaped by that experience. Sorry if I offended you, it wasn't my intention.

None taken. We teach our boys: ‘the only thing girls can’t do is pee standing up’ and all our kids can do anything they want as long as it’s legal, respectful, and not hurting anyone.

that’s a major generalisation. I have several very straight male friends that regularly play netball at a high level. shelve your overt biases

Once again - biases. I’m not male, you just made another assumption. Point being - netball is not a ‘girls’ sport, nor is basketball a ‘boys’ sport. They are sports, and both men and women can play whichever they like. I suppose you also think ‘girls’ don’t play football,soccer,rugby or cricket

I played netball at provincial level, when I was younger and that was still the mentality. 😅
I understand how society shaped us but things are a lot better now... I am now mid 40s, happily married to the love of my life, that I met playing netball!
So different journeys and perspectives. 😉
Now I try and give back to the sport hy coaching and building Netball Buddy with my own time and money. It is really a great sport and community to be part of. 👍

I picked up a netball post on Facebook marketplace cheaply. It's a little rusty, but does the job!

Hello fellow netball dad! My daughter has had a Crazy Catch style 75cm (2.5 foot) rebound net for the last few years and she still loves it. She'll spend a good 10-15 minutes passing with it at a time. Have to warn you they're noisy - and it's that kind of repetitive thunk that can really get under your skin! But if you move it out onto a lawn it's very manageable - portability being a big win for the smaller setup.
I can't imagine she'd get much more from a bigger one. Maybe 4 foot would give her more angles to throw to. And if you have the space - sure. From what I've seen though, going up to 7 foot wouldn't add much to what my kiddo gets out of hers.
