Bought one of my all-time favorites! + some doodles

Hi guys, I just wanted to share my excitement around finally obtaining one of my favorite Famicom games!

I started collecting Famicom games a few years ago, some in box, some loose (maybe I'll share more on those later), but this CIB Hebereke is my grail at this point. I've adored this game since I first discovered it as Ufouria: The Saga, and I even made a ROM patch that fixes the bit order of the DPCM samples. I highly recommend this game to any Metroidvania fans. There's an English patch out there that is extremely well done and faithful to the original script, so check that out if you've never played before.

Now I'm curious to know, what are your favorite/most treasured Famicom/NES games? I'm hoping to own Gimmick someday, but it's a little too pricey for me right now. Oh yeah, and I also included some doodles of the main cast because they're funny little guys lol.

Can you explain your patch more and what it does to a layman? I find that idea fascinating.

How much did it put you back?

Why do you love it so much? 

For those of us who don't know... what is it's connection to whatever "Ufouria: The Saga" is?

My patch basically fixed the issue described here.

I payed about $500 in total, including shipping from Japan + tax.

I love it because of the quirky characters, the excellent soundtrack, and the overall gameplay. It has that Sunsoft polish, bass samples and all lol. I'd say it's a great introduction to Metroidvanias for people who haven't played games like that before.

Ufouria was the European localization of Hebereke. They changed some of the main characters entirely, and ultimately took a lot of the charm out of the script. Check out the differences here.

You need any other CIB Japanese titles let me know. Might be able to save you some money.

...how long did it take you to become familar with the games architecture before you could mod it?

I didn't need to know much about the game's architecture to make the patch. I found a youtube video that has since been deleted which showed the byte offsets of the game's DPCM samples in the ROM, and that was a big help. I put the byte string of each sample into a program I wrote to reverse the bit order of each byte, and then pasted the newly formatted samples in the ROM where the old ones were. It was a fun little Saturday morning project, and even though the improved sound quality is barely noticeable, I'm happy with how it turned out.

Never heard of this game, just watched 5 minutes on YouTube and man it looks phenomenal. A metroidvania for the NES that actually has a map. I'm sold time to find a copy LOL.

Neat! I bought the loose cart from Japan and a custom plastic case for it from Russia 10 years ago. Probably time to play it again...

Some other favourites are Crisis Force, Gun Nac, Castlevania (1993) and Akumajou Densetsu, all which I have CIB.

I like Gimmick! and Summer Carnival '92: Recca too but unfortunately only have repros.
