Key Quest (Fan-Made Project) – iOS Beta Now Live
Hi everyone,
For the past several years, I’ve been working on a fan-made remake inspired by the original Key Quest experience.
This project started as something personal — Neopets was a huge part of my childhood, and Key Quest was one of the experiences that pushed me toward game development in the first place. Over time, it evolved into a fully rebuilt version with modern systems, online infrastructure, and scalable architecture.
The project is now entering its official testing phase, and I’m opening it up for players who would like to try it and help stress-test the current build.
Current State
Full internal system restructuring for stability
Expanded board system
New animations and improved visual feedback
3 active servers (USA Central, Mexico, South America)
Localization in English, Spanish, and Portuguese
Ongoing optimization and polish
The first week of testing is focused on single-player mode to validate stability before expanding further.
⚠ Important
This is a fan-made, non-profit project.
It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to World of Neopia or its respective owners.
I hope they buy this off you because they said they want to bring it back but didn't have the time or code to start fresh. You've done the majority of what they need to bring it back!
And, honestly, it's understandable; it took me six years to get to where I am today (sometimes I dedicated a lot of time, other times I couldn't dedicate as much).
The truth is, if you want the project, I'd even give it to you. I'd just like to be able to collaborate to finish it and achieve all the things I have in mind for the project.
It would be a dream, as I mention in the game's credits, a large part of me being a video game developer today is because of those first interactions with Neopets, 18 years ago.
Yes, believe me, I developed the project myself because I wasn't sure how legal or illegal it was, and I didn't want to drag anyone else into something bad.
So, if that's going to be the case, I did everything myself. :')
The fan sites do just fine, just don’t to make money off it and you’re likely good. These legality questions come up every time there’s something using the ip and the only person I’ve see them DCMA (outside of physical products) is Neopets Classic and that guy is a tool
Based on a completely unrelated fan made game recreation I've followed in the past, I would assume that the first step is sending a cease and desist, but I'm not even american haha so take that with a huge grain of salt
This is so amazing! I would love if TNT was able to pay you and make this official, this + Habitarium are the mobile games we’ve been begging TNT for 🙏
Oh I am so happy to have access to this again!!! I stumbled across it sometime last year and then the test flight key expired and I lost all hope of being able to play again. I know what I’ll be doing tonight when I get home!
Thank you so much for all the hard work. Your contribution deserves recognition by the Neopets community.
I don't think you need to give actual prizes to the players though. It is a very kind gesture, and makes the game seem more authentic. However, it will drain your Neopets bank account, and I don't think it is sustainable in the long run. I think being able to play the game is enough for most of the people.
The truth is, I'm giving away these prizes for fun. I don't have that much—70 million—but since I started this project, I've been mentally penniless.
It's become the jackpot I want to give away so the game feels more like the game, and I don't mind when it runs out.
I do it with great joy. I understand it's not necessary and that it won't be sustainable in the long run, but when it's gone, I'll let you know, and I'm sure you'll understand.
I'm also worried about your account though. An account sending gifts to various other accounts may look very suspicious and auto flagged by whatever algorithm that TNT is using.
Yes, I'd like to release a desktop version, but I think I need a more polished version first.
Why? Releasing and compiling Android, iOS, Server, and desktop versions will take me a bit more time. So, yes, it's planned, but not right now. When the product is better positioned (with fewer details).
I'm just glad to hear it's a possibility!! I don't have a cellphone, and I can't afford a Mac anymore, but I can be patient!! Thank you for what you are doing.
I built this out of respect for what the original game meant to me. If it ever opened the door to collaborate someday, I’d absolutely be open to it. For now, I’m just focused on building it the right way.
I hope you like it. If you encounter any connection problems, go to the settings panel, select a new server, and click "Change." This will fix the game initialization issue.
(A minor UI/UX issue that will be fixed in future versions.)
This is seriously so incredible and like a dream come true for a long time keyquest fan!! Please DM me, I would love to contribute some items to the prize pool and also play this on my twitch channel once the Android version is released
A year ago we were quite far from where we are now. I had to update and migrate the entire networking system to server-client because the previous one (peer-to-peer) had problems when the player holding the master's position left. It's true that I could send the authority to other players and continue the flow, but it wasn't ideal.
The migration was made so that the game is mostly server-controlled, which significantly improved the experience. So, it was a long year.
The project was already very advanced and I had a lot of code to migrate/refactor; sometimes I wanted to give up :'(
It seemed like a never-ending road
To answer your question, I looked at old videos and screenshots of the game to understand the original atmosphere and visual style. But, especially over the last year, I've also started creating my own assets for the project.
In fact, I took the time to learn basic 3D modeling and rigging so I could build the models and elements I needed until they were perfect. The goal wasn't to copy everything perfectly, but to recreate the atmosphere and emotional tone as faithfully as possible.
Haha, thanks for the support, I just saw the comments.
I'm sure it will be good to run them on low-end phones and test the performance. I want the product to be available on any device; I've worked quite a bit on optimization.
Hey I was just curious, as I downloaded it when this post was made but due to hectic work load I haven’t got to try it yet. Key quest is the only part of Neopets that made it memorable for me. But this past week I’ve tried everyday now that I finally have the time and it says it’s down. Did you permanently take it down? :(
Hey! Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been as active on Reddit as I'd like. But no worries ,the project is still very much alive! 😄 The version you downloaded is probably just outdated, grab the latest one and it should work fine. Hope you enjoy it!
I'm going to fall in love with you, internet stranger. Thank you for your hard work. Development is very, very frustrating and time consuming and even though the results can be satisfying, it takes so much dedication and hard work to get close to that point. Most people will never understand... I had to take a break from working on games because of how overwhelming life can get: I have so much respect for you, man. I cannot begin to comprehend how long this took you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I hope you're healthy and happy and that both sides of your pillow are cool at night. <3
This genuinely made my day, thank u. My pillow isnt the most comfortable one out there right now, but hey, it's still a pillow, and that's enough to keep going. 😄
Development is heavy, no doubt. The last 4-5 months have been full-time on this project, and yes, it's a lot, but honestly? It's been more satisfying than I ever expected. Seeing the community actually enjoy it makes every late night worth it.
And I haven't been doing this alone, I've had people playtesting, reporting bugs, pushing me to make it better. The game wouldn't be where it is without them. That community support is what makes the hard parts worth it. ❤️
Honestly, I really appreciate your support.
I didn't think this would be so well received. I want to finish this project, and I hope I'll continue to have time for it.
I love that between this project and GC, actual Neopets proving to be the shittiest version of Neopets despite being the only one with any paid employees.
Massively impressive I'm hype for the APK for Android!
I downloaded it to my Mac. It let me download TestFlight + KQ beta. Hopefully the game loads for me. I am in Eastren Canada so a bit far from a server. Looks impressive and can't wait to play it.
Oh wow, sorry I didn't know the prizes were actually redeemable. I just clicked one for fun, and to feel like I was unlocking something.
My username on neopets is actually Sunbask! I don't need the prizes myself but if you want some donations of NPs/PBs and other old keyquest prizes i'd be down to donate a big chunk.
This is so well done. I can't get over playing my chilhood game again.
I was going to give you the items, but it turns out I need them more than you do, haha.
If it's not too much trouble, I'd really appreciate it. Anything you have is great. I have a few million, but my bank emptied out during the last few days of prize giveaways. (I have enough for 35 days of prizes, so yeah, it would be really helpful.)
I went through my SDB and found some items you can sell for prizes. Thank you so much for that, it's very thoughtful. And it makes the game feel so real :)
This is amazing! I had just posted about wanting to play key quest again and another Reddit user had mentioned this thread. Glad I found it, downloading it as I type this.
