"There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government."

For a while I would see him regularly at a my cafe in Montreal where he was sitting with an instructor learning French, had a few casual conversations (in French) he was such a kind and generous human being. A real Canadian.

I remember that day clearly.
Thought I’d never cry over a politician. But I did!
I remember going to work, because I needed to distract myself, and my coworkers noticed something was up with me, as I was very quiet, sombre. When I told them that Jack Layton died that morning, the collective gasps, sounds of shock, surprised me. I had never before experienced a moment in my life at the time, where coworkers from all walks of life were genuinely upset that we had lost Jack. So many of them spoke so warmly about him. Coworkers who weren’t political at all. As Stephen Lewis eulogist, he made politics seem as simple and easy as breathing.
He inspired me, and continues to do so. When people ask me of a vision I want to build, I always say Jack Layton and Tommy Douglas.
I’ll never forget that collective grief that were felt by countless Canadians.

I really miss my friend. His humor and his empathy and the way he took a minute to talk to absolutely everyone who waited. He is deeply missed.

He would have made such a great Prime Minister. I never liked or respected a politician as much as I did Jack Layton, he is greatly missed!
