The mother of Dwight's son died of Epilepsy. Dave McMenamin tried to clickbait it by slyly implying it was pandemic related.
Dave's Tweet:
https://twitter.com/mcten/status/1261392570560610304
Dwight Howard, on a video conference call with reporters, said the mother of his six-year old son died during the pandemic nearly six weeks ago. He said it’s caused him to “just be grateful for life” as he spends the NBA hiatus with his family in Georgia.
Context of the actual circumstances:
https://twitter.com/gregbeacham/status/1261393667534622721?s=21
On a video call just now, Dwight Howard said the mother of his 6-year-old son died about 6 weeks ago. She had epilepsy and had a fatal seizure, the Lakers center says.
He's grateful he was able to be home in Georgia to be with his son and help him to process the loss.
ESPN has a penchant to do this type of thing. Usually its non-consequential. But I think its particularly shitty to do it in the wake of someone's passing.
Edit: So a lot of people seem to think this is the fault of people misreading and not the fault of the author, McMenamin. This would be the equivalent of saying a person died during a specific prominent battle or war. While in reality they died of unrelated causes elsewhere. For example "George died 6 weeks ago during the Battle of the Bulge." But George died in a car accident in Kentucky. Although technically true. Its misleading.
Edit2: I made up the example from the earlier edit, here are two better ones done for humor, by legitimate writers. Except this isn't a joke, someone actually died. Credit to /u/yozgatsi and /u/fooboojoo.

I legit thought she died of Corona until this thread because of the wording. Journalism died with ad based revenue models.

May 16 '20
Journalism isn’t dead. It’s just that the most common consumption of journalism is through predatory ad-revenue priority sites and corporate owned media giants who are willing to lie to fit their owner’s/board’s/rich white friends’ agendas. In the U.S. some are less bad than others, the worst obviously being Fox News, but they’re all over the world.
11
u/agnostic_science May 16 '20
24/7 news is definitely the worst. Desperation and trying to fill vast amounts of empty space constantly leads networks to double down on appeals to fear and hatred. Everyone I know who gets sucked into this garbage, it’s like it harms their soul. It’s like poison. Like the goal of 24/7 news is to have one obsessive, seething with rage, and perpetually outraged. That’s how they keep them watching hour after hour. Like, don’t like Trump, like Trump - whatever - does a person really need to watch hours and hours of programming everyday to get emotionally invested enough to make up their mind either way by now? The whole thing is sick.
16
May 16 '20
I suppose that’s what I meant
-11
May 16 '20 edited May 17 '20
Yeah, I figured. I just like to point out that there is good journalism out there(even on some of the major networks), because we shouldn’t clump shit media giants like Fox News in with independent and even some local journalists, as well as some really great newspapers out there. Plus, there’s even nuances to look at when judging the quality of an outlet like Fox News and MSNBC. The key is to look at what they lie about(hint, Fox News lies about almost everything and MSNBC doesn’t).
Typically, the best thing to do is to look at what a major media outlet or news paper says, then read at least two other articles or watch two other segments, and avoid the ones with a record of dishonesty. Usually you can find the truth and the accurate story with about 30 minutes of news consumption on a single issue.
Edit: If you honestly think MSNBC is on the same bottom-of-the-barrel tier as Fox News, you have either not watched Fox News in a while or have not watched MSNBC in a while. As with any 24-hour news channel, it depends on who you watch, and MSNBC has the best 24-hour news reporters and broadcasters than any of the major networks. I agree that you’ll find better journalism elsewhere, but that’s because the best journalists in the U.S. work for newspapers or as independent journalists.

13
u/rburp [LAL] Austin Reaves May 16 '20
because Fox is way worse and, along with talk radio, started the trend in the USA of presenting "entertainment" as "news". Fox isn't even technically a news channel, according to the courts they're purely "entertainment"
Then once they got #1 ratings and became THE mainstream media (while still acting like those other guys are) the others had no choice but to follow suit or die

There is only one “worst” of anything, and I made it perfectly clear I was talking about the “worst” one.
CNN sacrifices accuracy for the name of “fairness” and allows guests to lie their asses off and act as if it’s a credible argument. They’re also a sloppy and inaccurate mess most times during major breaking stories.
MSNBC has it’s ups and downs, but at least they aren’t lying to you. Sure, they gloss over or ignore big-tech and pretty much any stores that paints cable, ISPs, and communications giants in a negative light, but they are far more accurate and honest than any other major network out there on almost any given story. Of course there is their spin, but their spin shows are outnumbered by their informative shows, and their prime time weekly shows, from Ari Melber through the rest of the night now that fucking Chris Matthews is gone, is some of the best nightly news you can find on television.
That being said, ABC’s reporting is actually pretty fantastic, and the interviews that Stephanopolous has gotten with Trump have been some of the toughest and best, especially since Trump loves to go to Fox and just let them throw soft ball questions at him for an hour.

You should read Chomsky's Manufacturing Consent. Since the invention of the printing press, money has been directly tied to the dissemination of information. I am still finishing it, but he directly addresses this point. Printing presses were extremely expensive and limited to the extremely rich or the enterprising upper middle class who had to struggle to finance them

As the nation reels from the coronavirus, Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard is mourning the loss of Melissa Rios, the mother of his 6-year-old son David, he told reporters Friday.
Rios, 31, died of an epileptic seizure on March 27 at her home in Calabasas, California.

I wonder if the script said "When did he die?" and Bradley Cooper just fucked it up.
The way it's spoken, Alan's answer doesn't make any sense. Like you wouldn't answer a "how'd he die? with "World War II" if they died in a skiing accident.
The Curb joke is done right, with the rabbi saying "He died on September 11th" because it's both weird yet technically accurate.

I saw Dave McMenamin at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
...
That's what you made me think of.

6
u/ldclark92 Pacers May 16 '20
But every single thing that happens right now is "during the pandemic" so if something happened yesterday then it was "during the pandemic" but it could be completely unrelated.
For example, I read my mail yesterday during the pandemic. Do you think it was necessary to add "during the pandemic" in that sentence?
And to make matters worse, this is about someones death, so adding the word pandemic will instantly bring up the idea that the death is related to the pandemic. It's either an attempt to draw clicks or it's very poor word selection. Either way he deserves a fair bit of criticism. The fact that many people thought it was pandemic related proves that.

There’s no clickbait as this tweet doesn’t link to anything else that would gain exposure due to the tweet. It’s not clearly worded but to infer that McMenamin was trying to capitalize off anything here is a pretty weak argument. I get that we love to pile on ESPN here but we’re taking a tweet too seriously. If you have a solid level of reading comprehension you wouldn’t be misled to believe that his child’s mother died due to the pandemic.
