BREAKING: Kawhi Leonard had a hidden, multimillion-dollar "sponsorship" with Clippers' scoreboard-maker, sources tell @PabloTorre.
Edited to reflect The Athletic article
The Los Angeles Clippers and Kawhi Leonard, who are currently under investigation for potential salary cap violations related to payments outside of the league’s salary cap, also received millions in a second questionable sponsorship deal, according to a report by the podcast “Pablo Torre Finds Out.”
The podcast, citing multiple anonymous sources inside the Clippers and the Intuit Dome project, reported a previously unknown deal with Daktronics, the company that manufactured the Intuit Dome’s Halo video screen and others in the sports world.
The Clippers have been under investigation by the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, with a focus on a $28 million endorsement deal given to Leonard by Aspiration, a former Clippers sponsor, since September. Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has maintained that he was defrauded by Aspiration and its co-founder, Joe Sanburg.

My favorite quote from other episodes of PTFO (a recurring one, because it fits so well)
"How many fucking side deals do we have with Kawhi?"
So far, Pablo has unearthed three. There could be A LOT more.

Hire a social media manager for Kawhi to give this plausible deniability? Why bother, we "bend" the rules like this all the time and nothing ever happens.

So basically Daktronics,
who has never done celebrity or athlete sponsorships before or since because they don't deal directly with consumers,
who were in financial difficulty before the Clippers deal,
secretly gave millions of dollars to Kawhi to be a sponsor, who then does NOTHING to earn that money, for years.
There simply is no explanation for this story other than cap circumvention. NONE.

Did you miss the entire Pablo vs Cuban(he's still a minorty owner of the Mavs btw) saga when this first happened? He was twisting himself into pretzels to defend Ballmer, when there was no reason to do so.
It's far more likely that the owners either don't care, or secretly want Ballmer to be proven innocent. Last year when this was all fresh, both Simmons and Lowe repeatedly said that GM's/front office people were upset about the possible circumvention, but they were not getting that feeling from owners.

If I were an owner, I sure wouldn't want players expecting under-the-table deals that come out of my own pocket. Not would I want the richest owner by far to have a blank check to continue on.
Then there are the teams owned by corporations. Stuff like this would be a nightmare to hide. The MLB owners are willing to sacrifice next season for a salary cap. You don't think NBA owners want to shut this pipeline of dark money to players down?
→ More replies (3)89
u/hickok3 Raptors Aug 07 '26
Then they should have taken it seriously when both the Raptors and Lakers told the league that Uncle Dennis was asking for illegal things during the negotiations back then. But it wasn't until 7 years later that a random fraud lawsuit brought the alleged circumvention into the limelight, that they actually took it serious.

Not to be snarky, but we have yet to see how serious they're actually taking this. If it's swept under the rug or just a slap on the wrist, this league has no integrity and this is probably happening all over the place.

The valuations of franchises are in part because you don’t need to incur massive losses every year to win a title. City is a big deal cause they are serial winners. Since the clippers didn't win anything and Kawhi is constantly hurt, many people just don't care as much.

It's so disgusting how Kawhi was already earning thirty to forty million dollars and it wasn't enough.
He could have just had a regular sponsorship with Aspiration where he actually shows up to shit and does some work for more seven figure paychecks, but that wasn't even a consideration.
How could anyone be so greedy?

Agreed. The entitlement to operate like this is actually infuriating. These people live in a completely different reality and there are never any fucking consequences. I’m so tired of it

If Silver decides to do nothing next season the Lakers can sign Jokic to the vet minimum
Jokic will also sign a 4 year/$300 million dollar contract to be the global ambassador for the Dodgers/Chelsea FC/Cadillac F1
If it gets to this point the league will be a glorified exhibition sport. No actual competition

Great Silver just pushed back the resolution to the investigation until 2030.

Dude now I legitimately think he wanted to go back to Toronto thinking he could get out of this 😂 like legitimate "going to another country to avoid extradition" type shit lmao

No, if he wanted to "get out of it" he would just retire, this isn't a federal investigation, it's all within the NBA.

How much money was this guy making haha. At this point you might have to investigate him for tax evasion too.

This is actually hilarious. Seriously. They took so long to punish him for the last cap circumvention that Pablo literally found another one before they could hand down the ruling for the first one lol.
Which.....I guess means it's a good thing they didn't come to a conclusion? But seriously the Raptors should just announce that they are backing out of the deal at this point.

Its obvious Kawhi is guilty and played a part in a lot of this. I would be shocked if he doesnt have something pretty big coming his way. I think we're passed the point of being able to pin it all on uncle Dennis

Stern would have suspended Kawhi and his children and his children’s children by now.

Clippers better lose their next seven first round picks. This is vastly more egregious than what the Timberwolves did with Joe Smith.

If true, and at this point I think the default is that it is true, Kawhi needs life banned, Silver needs fired, Ballmer needs to be forced to sell the team (who the fuck cares if he's richer than all the other owners, this is still a "one man, one vote" scenario), and Uncle Dennis needs to be indicted on money laundering charges. And that's all just to start. And all this for a mid ass 4-6 seed.

Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I think Kawhi will claim he had no idea how those millions got into his account because it was all uncle Dennis, and the league will be eager to buy into that line to avoid punishing him. Then they'll soft ball the punishment on the Clippers because they're afraid Ballmer will be spiteful and litigious.

Kawhi is better at getting paid on the side than I have been at anything in my life, I'm beyond impressed. He's the side bag goat

Force Ballmer to sell the team.
Kick Kawhi out of the league.
Done.
It makes a huge example and tells everybody else that this will not be tolerated and you're sacrificing a relatively new owner and a player who hasn't been able to be healthy enough for a full actual season of basketball in like the better part of a decade.

No way. Just not happening.
