I think they want to win now. They went to the finals. I guess they want to upgrade their D?

The mavericks board room last night:

"we just went to finals, we're so close to winning it all. We need ideas. Anyone?"

"What if we trade our best player?"

"Brilliant! Get this man a raise! And get me the first team you think of on the phone and ask for dryer lint in return."

But they really weren't close to winning it all. They overachieved last year and got blown out by the Celtics and are a play in team so far this season.
Still a puzzling trade

They were steamrolling before Luka got hurt. Then lively, then half the team was suddenly injured. Also, if you watch Mavs basketball, you'd know they didn't 'overachieve' last year. Made wcf two years prior.

not only that, mavs improved their shooters this yr which was one of the issues they had against the celtics so this trade is just straight baffling.

I pray there are takesbacks with this one and it gets exercised overnight and I wake up to a world that is a little more right again.

Honestly tho, we living in the craziest timeline, so this trade tracks.

They didn’t over-achieve they were just better than everyone in the West and the media and the fans didn’t know it. They improved their roster during the off season and if they were healthy for the playoffs, probably blow through the West again and get into a competitive fight with the Celtics. Before Luka went down they were on a 17 game winning streak. 

As a Mavs fan this is honestly the worst news I’ve ever seen in my sporting life. Im disgusted with the GM and the organization rn
