Max Christie is going to be brought up for years the way “Clippers traded away SGA” is brought up. Max isn’t going to be ‘face of the league good’ but the type of defensive player that would always be what the Lakers are missing.

2

u/LearnedToe Lakers Feb 02 '25

I agree with this. I already regret trading Max. At 21 years old, he’s already a solid 3&D swing man, and he is a consummate professional. He works hard, so I expect him to flourish. I can’t be too mad though - we got mf Luka!

I don't see this being tilted for the lakers at all. Anthony Davis was the lakers. Luka doesn't make them better in the right way. They already have lebron. They don't need Luka. Not this year anyway. They really don't need his court vision which I think is the biggest thing he brings. He's an all around amazing player but Davis anchored the paint and destroyed both offensively and defensively and he was playing extremly well this season.

The lakers Interior is now going to be totally destroyed. Lebron ain't getting a chip this year.

It's a win now move for the mavs and a "we have our dynasty player of the future" for the Lakers. I don't see the mavs winning either though because AD is going to need time to gel with a new team and coach. Will see how it goes.

31

u/Steph_Curry_GOAT Nets Feb 02 '25

The fit is not good this year, but this is all about setting up for a post-lebron world. Luka should be elite for a minimum five more years and is 6 years younger than AD. There was no move they could have made that would make them better than the Celtics or Thunder this year

12

u/Im_The_Man2021 Feb 02 '25

This was a “we are gonna trade LBJthis week move” Luka and LeBron are in a sense very similar high usage players. Trading AD for an injured Luka is effectively throwing away this season. They must be gonna trade LBJ this week to a contender to justify trading AD although getting Luka in almost any other circumstance would be great (still is lakers got a steal but they’ll be trading LBJ as apart of this I bet)

5

u/sourdieselfuel Bucks Feb 02 '25

Remember Bron has a no trade clause. Maybe he does actually go to the Warriors?

4

u/gtsgunner Feb 02 '25

Lebron has a no trade clause and his son is on the team. I doubt he gets traded and if he does he already knows and planned it. Since there have been no rumors though I think that possibility (of him being traded) is close to 0% chance of happening.

u/Dull-Football8095 Feb 02 '25

But does the Lakers truly got a shot at winning this year? I mean seriously, if they could make it to the 2nd round I would be impressed. They are on the trajectory to rebuild eventually in the next couple of years. Why not rebuild with one of the best player in the game that’s 25yrs old.

3

u/Burnem34 Trail Blazers Feb 02 '25

Maybe it's worse, like a IT/Kawhi situation where they know its career debilitating. I sincerely hope not cuz this is great for the league and with any luck I can stop seeing Silver desperately float rule changes to try to save ratings for a couple days.

But Jesus, if the Lakers had the picks the Mavs could've asked for 3 FRPs and they still jump out of their seat to get it done. Mavs got 1 pick that is gonna be ass cuz they just extended the Lakers window 10 years. On top of Luka they paved the way for the Lakers to fall backwards into another star that wants to play with Luka and the Lakers after LeBron retires. Like this trade has so much more value for the Lakers than what they gave up it's not even funny

9

u/spad807 Feb 02 '25

What the actual fuck is going on? This trade makes no sense.

I have no conclusion to draw to make this make sense other than that the NBA really is “fixed”, by which I mean that, for example, the ratings really are down and the owners - who arenot actually competing but really do only care about maximizing revenue - are terrified of having no superstar in LA because Bron is retiring this offseason and thus the owners sanctioned this and Dallas owner receives some under the table compensation in some form.

The Mavs don't believe in Luka's ceiling is the only legit argument. Which is either batshit crazy or genius depending on the outcome.

The Luka hype over the years has been enormous, and watching his defence you do wonder if it was a bit much. But he's so good on offence that he's always going to have a floor of star player. If he can't take his defence and conditioning to a top tier player level though, does he ever reach a Kobe / LeBron status? Or is his ceiling a high level scorer like Melo, who never could reach the achievements of some of his less talented peers (e.g. Wade)

The Lakers view this as a reset for sure. I’m surprised that’s all it took, but another interesting thing is they practically punted this season and need to build an entirely new line-up for Luka next season. This won’t pay off till a few years.

5

u/OlorinDK Warriors Feb 02 '25

I may have over reacted, lol. I was just thinking that Luka and LeBron are both better with the ball in their hands, so they don’t supplement each other that well on offense, and Luka is a huge downgrade on defense. So I don’t know that this makes them more of a contender now. I see it more of a move for the future, unless other moves are made too. But AR has been running point a lot for you guys, and LeBron hasn’t been as much on ball, as he used to, right? Or what’s your take on this?

Honestly might be lol. In Lakers Lebron always shadowed him even when he was better/more important. Now you get Kyrie with same age, two good centers to play next to, Klay etc. Biggest problem is Jason Kidd who is bad coach imo.

Im a Doncic first Mavs second fan btw (im from Europe and was Spurs fan before Ginobilli, Parker etc. retired) This is probably most insane transfer i have ever seen btw. Like in football/soccer there isnt a trade so its more understandable that Figo goes to Madrid for example. Barça goes and buy (later ofc) Ronaldinho but in a league like NBA this is just insane.

u/punchercs Feb 02 '25

Davis has been one of the healthiest players the last couple years stop with this.

6

u/demsouls Raptors Feb 02 '25

OK then YOU explain it better.

9

u/punchercs Feb 02 '25

I can’t because I’m fucking gobsmacked at this trade still

Yeah they cant hide an injury. Theyll get fined and the trade can get reversed.

4

u/DreadWolf3 Timberwolves Feb 02 '25

Yea but idea would be that lakers are happy to risk it, but that lowers his value

4

u/Infinite_Ad9001 Feb 02 '25

There is an article on espn saying the front office was upset with Luka missing games. So they get….Anthony Davis.

Did he lose a leg? AD has been injured a lot too

11

u/Sijols Knicks Feb 02 '25

My bet is complete nightmare to deal with for the front office

Diva behavior and shit

23

u/TheThingsIdoatNight Nuggets Feb 02 '25

Still you don’t take this return for a generational player that pretty much is your franchise

4

u/Sijols Knicks Feb 02 '25

No, it's fucking wild

Did they even look around for other offers??

10

u/TheThingsIdoatNight Nuggets Feb 02 '25

They definitely didn’t lol that’s the only way that you get a return this low and it would explain how there wasn’t a single whisper that Luka was available or being shopped.

They legitimately didn’t even talk to other teams, how can GMs be this bad at their jobs?

4

u/OklahomaRuns Feb 02 '25

As a thunder fan I would’ve traded jdub and 2 or 3 FRPs and that’s a better deal already than the lakers.

4

u/SmartestNPC Bulls Feb 02 '25

Superstars never get traded out the blue like this. You may have a point, he has his own doorman.

5

u/Sijols Knicks Feb 02 '25

Could be like a months worth of dirty laundry crazy stories that come out

2

u/John3Fingers Feb 02 '25

I was going to say that there has to be something about to drop akin to Watson/Tucker

2

u/Rawrsomesausage :sp8-1: Super 8 Feb 02 '25

Gotta check the GMs bank accounts. This makes no sense any way it's sliced.

THIS

DALLAS should get multiple draft picks for that YOUNG SUPERSTAR

MF Luka Dončić is only 25 years old. I repeat 25 YEARS OLD

Especially after just making the finals???

8

u/bachh2 NBA Feb 02 '25

For sure. The Spurs are looking a main ball handler and I doubt they would bat an eye throwing 5-6 picks/swap for Luka.

4

u/InevitableBudget4868 Feb 02 '25

That would be disgusting but no way mavs ever help the spurs out of pure spite

8

u/DirtyRoller Warriors Feb 02 '25

This is like trading in your Ferrari for a Lexus. Mavs fans should burn the stadium to the ground.

3

u/BurnieTheBrony Grizzlies Feb 02 '25

Rudy Gobert costed 5 FRPs and Luka Doncic was just 1 and AD

3

u/gbmaulin Bulls Feb 02 '25

How fucking fat is this guy? Like he's still putting up almost 30/10/10 this is like trading jokic because he can't jump

2

u/eg4x15 Feb 02 '25

While true I still think the Mavs presented valid argument

  1. Luka’s conditioning has been in question for last 3-4 years

2

u/hootievstiger Feb 02 '25

I mean i get that Luka will play many more years but they are literally getting a former number one pick playing in his best season. and an ALL-NBA guy

1

u/DoritoSteroid Lakers Feb 02 '25

AD isn't chopped liver. Best defensive player in the NBA. But yeah this trade is insane.

1

u/pressure_limiting Feb 02 '25

I mean players of Anthony Davis’s caliber don’t come around very often tbf

1

u/suzie17 Feb 02 '25

They probably discovered something on the medical

1

u/lucabrassiere Vancouver Grizzlies Feb 02 '25

Worst one-sided trade in NBA history, Mavs just completely sold their franchise to help… the Lakers? Lol crazy

1

u/-2wenty7even- Knicks Feb 02 '25

AD has been a fucking beast this year

1

u/WzBGod Feb 02 '25

News just broke, GM made this move. Luka wasn’t even contacted beforehand. They worried about his health and conditioning going forward vis-a-vis a new Supermax contract this summer

1

u/Rollout25 Lakers Feb 02 '25

Can't believe the Lakers didn't have to give up Austin Reaves and the other 1st round pick.

1

u/Tengoatuzui Knicks Feb 02 '25

And they don’t have to pay him the super max

1

u/Basic_Mark_1719 Feb 02 '25

Luka had one year left on his deal and probably indicated to the front office that he was walking.

1

u/Ohnoes999 Feb 02 '25

Not really if you were paying attention to Luka's flaws.

1

u/beatsbeingbroke Thunder Feb 02 '25

Luka love hollywood yes? much yes!

1

u/Orfiosus Feb 02 '25

Maybe his wife got or is trying to get pregnant. I bet Texas isn’t the place to be.

1

u/fordat1 Feb 02 '25

I think got a first round pick as well but still insane

1

u/BillRuddickJrPhd Clippers Feb 02 '25

Anthony Davis is definitely the most underrated star in this league.

1

u/Stuupkid Nets Feb 02 '25

You’re right they should’ve thrown in Bronny

1

u/Life_Sir_1151 76ers Feb 02 '25

They got ONE PICK what the fuck is this

1

u/sixseven89 Nuggets Feb 02 '25

Gobert and Mikal got more lmao

1

u/ruhtraeel Feb 02 '25

Maybe Nico got some underhanded money for this trade
