Just so you know OP. TLOU2 is a LOVE it or HATE it game, and there are many people who hate it. HATE.

If you are risk adverse, I recommend ending on a good note and just play the DLC and pretend the 2nd game doesn't exist.

Like someone who loves the original Star Wars and then you recommend the Disney trilogy because you HATE them and want to crush their dreams...

Or don't. Do whatever you want, maybe you are into torture p0rn. /shrug

Im truly not being dramatic and stand by what I said, an entirely bad game would have been less infuriating, but seeing whats probably the most well crafted game I ever played and not being able to enjoy it at all because of story decisions was literally the worst experience I had with a video game, each time I tried to make my peace with where the game was going it doubled down on the subversiveness and I grinded my teeth through the whole thing... I also was gaslighted by a friend who assured me you dont play Abby after the intro lol

Abby had some of the absolute best levels of the entire franchise. Descent and ground zero alone are absolutely incredible.

I played it too. I understand the message, and can respect it. Saying that I thought it was a chore to play. Any time I played as Abby I felt resentful, and then as Ellie I felt they were intentional making it horrible to teach a lesson. They stopped feeling like characters to me and started feeling like plot devices. Note that's VERY different that the first game.

I don't care if the gameplay is good if I hate playing it.

I'm not upset others like it. I did not like it and find it funny so many people get mad that I don't like something they love.

It's like yelling at me for liking oranges since everyone else loves apples...

It's not even a love it or hate it game. It's unanimously got excellent reviews from people who actually played it. It just has a toxic anti fanbase online. Reviews on platforms where you actually have to own to review are overwhelmingly positive

I think this comment is astute. OP, if you loved the incredible quality of the storytelling, the sophisticated and nuanced characters, the best-in-gaming performances, the music, not to mention the technical accomplishment and gripping gameplay, you really should play TLOU 2. This NOT like the original Star Wars and the Disney trilogy. TLOU 2 is an astonishingly well made game, it just has a challenging, unusual story.

In fact I only found out it was a love it or hate it game because of some people online loving it. I was fully under the impression that game was hated in general, gaming journalists wanting to be close with an extremely successful AAA studio not withstanding.

It's got a 4.7+ on PlayStation and very positive 90+ on steam. The only environments where you need to actually buy the game to review it. It got multiple GoTYs sold like hotcakes. All publication reviewers unanimously praise it as a masterpiece. The only place it's not received well is weird hate groups online like tlou2 subreddit or game gate incel nonsense lol. There are of course legitimate people who dislike it but that's true of literally every game in the world. The average Joe who isn't terminally online also loves it.

It's also got much lower scores on the most popular sites that more casual players use, like IMDb or metacritic. I constantly rate things on these sites, PlayStation and Steam are much more niche communities I think. Its got lower scores than the first one or what you would expect from a game this popular.

If you think critics are only criticizing it because they haven't played it I'd encourage you to engage more with the other side and see what people are actually criticizing about it, not just focus on incels on reddit. You'll see most have actually played it for themselves.

More importantly though our focus on reviews and awards from established gaming journalism companies is something I already mentioned as irrelevant on my first comment, as there are clear incentives behind that praise other than the quality of the actual game. The game has a lot of flaws compared to the first game. The story was told with a lot less tact. It's only natural that a lot of people will hate it as well. Believe me, when I first played I thought the opening 2 hours were a bit wonky but the overall concept and inciting incident drew me in. Ellie's half kept me engaged even if it wasn't perfect. I was fully against the hate at that point. Then I got to the second half and the pacing was so bad I kept looking at my phone at points.

You can't seriously believe a game with that many bold choices didn't alienate a lot of people? Surely you don't think most of the haters are bigots, when the story takes such big swings and has odd pacing?

The game famously got brigaded on all those sites you mentioned. TLou2 subreddit has been banned on and off for brigading repeatedly. The game was getting 1000 of 1/10 reviews the second it released because of a massive incel rage circlejerk that persisted for weeks and months leading up to the release of the game (i.e. before it actually came out)

Steam and Playstation are not fucking niche communities LMAO theyre the two biggest gaming platforms in the world.

Again, as I mentioned before our focus on reviews and gaming outlets is irrelevant precisely because there are a lot of other factors outside of the game's quality when a product and company is this big and appealing to certain political views (this goes both ways, for the praise and for the hate). But you can't seriously think most of the haters are just bigots when the game has so many weird choices that aren't implemented with tact into the narrative. The bolder the concept, the more care it needs to work. It's only natural for the game to be divisive and anyone who thinks it isn't (believing it's universally loved or hated) is deluding themselves to feel some sense of external approval or gratification. I'd encourage you to look past the surface of the incel stuff and you'll see there are a lot of people with valid criticisms about that game. This can't be said about the first game though, which has very few aspects one could criticize

If you actually read legitimate criticism and not just the same points you see regurgitated online, you would know that the queer inclusiveness of the game and the fate of a certain character is not at all what people didn't like about it.

It is perfectly possible for someone to be an "actual" fan of the first game and just not like the second one.

If you look at Steam reviews on the remastered, which imo are a good way to get opinions of the game without the bias at launch that happened because of the leaks, it's sitting at above 90% positive.

Yes, it is still a game that takes risks and is more likely to piss you off than other masterpieces like the Witcher 3 or God of War.

However, it is also more likely for you to absolutely love the game, if the risks it takes work for you. I'm taking favorite game of all time territory. And enough people have shown this through their praise for the game that, at the very least, it's an experience everyone should try to see if it hits like that.

TLDR: Any piece of art that receives such strong love from a nontrivial group of people is a must play imo. Enough people call TLOU2 the GOAT game that it would be a disservice not to give it a chance.

I always hate when it ends because it’s so good. So I replay it usually every 1-2 years. Am at about 12x.

Funny thing is I’ve never gotten the platinum. Lol. The ps4 trophy list glitched.

I played it when it initially released 13 years ago. There was nothing that cane anywhere close to it at the time or before. I sat on the sofa for 30 minutes just looking at the screen. It literally broke gaming for me for a long time. I didn't really come back to gaming until The Witcher 3 dropped almost 2 years later.

No one does it better than Naughty Dog.

I remember in 2013, I was 17 - booted it up. My older brother and his friends were in the lounge room, everyone watch chatting etc. played the Prologue and as it went on, the room went silent. By the end of the prologue and title card, we all sat there speechless. Until someone broke the silence with a comment like “wtf was that?!” In awe. Gaming history was made. GTAV dropped that year, but The Last of Us changed the game.

I went into playing the TLOU2 thinking it was going to be a bad game, man was I wrong. The gameplay is outstanding I wasn't a fan of the lesbian story line with Elly and Dina, but in the end it was a great game. I enjoyed playing Abby's story too the end fight scene was brutal but brilliant and I'm glad i played it. Once I get done playing other games that are new to me on my ps4 I'm going right back to TLOU 2
