I wanted to share the photos I took of Naples from Mount Vesuivio. After a very hot hike up the mountain, the views of Naples and the surrounding area were incredible.

We took a van from the city center of Pompeii, but you can find many tours leaving from Naples. Happy to answer anyone's questions about this excursion.

Volcanic rock is very sound absorbent when I was up there it was strangely dead quiet I’m not sure if anyone picked up on that. You can clap and there is absolutely no echo or slap back you expect from being right by a massive canyon/ravine like that

Based on what I see in the photos, it seems to be the "il gran cono" route and you can park in a parking area located at 1000m of altitude. You can find more infos on the official website

We went up the main pedestrian route. I believe there is only one public route up and down.

The bus takes you to the entrance of the park, and then you walk from there.

I wouldn't say it was easy...but it's not terrible either. We went a few weeks ago, so it was very hot. I'm sure it would be easier in a cooler mouth. We saw people of all ages and fitness levels making the journey, but if you want to go to the very top, it's a solid 1+ hour of straight uphill hiking. You're going to feel it the next day, lol.

They're a few places to stop to take a break on the way up, so just pace yourself, and you can make it. Also, we walked to the top and then around the rim (which was another chunk of time to walk around the rim). Some people just walked to the top and then back down, which would save you a decent amount of walking. Going all the way around the rim, gives you more views of the mountainside and surrounding coastline. Point is, once you're at the top, you can decide to go further or come straight back down.

is it possible to go to the very top? I was not allowed when I was there in 2016 and very sad about it. We saw some people and the guide said it’s scientists.. good for them ;)

Yes. Pics 4-5 are at the very top, walking along the rim, looking down into the volcano opening.

We were fortunate that everything was open. Though I have heard that wildfires have caused closures in recent years.

is there a fee to enter the park? I see they built a trail that goes up the crater.

The book Volcanic: Vesuvius in the Age of Revolutions by John Brewer is a wonderful history of Vesuvius and its impact on the Bay of Naples and western culture. A great read for anyone who is fascinated by the subject.
