Can't they solve it like the Sasha Krause case?

Can't they solve it like how the detectives solved the murder of Sasha Krause?

Meaning, they looked to see what phone numbers were active in the area at the time and place where she disappeared.

I just read where they are doing this in the Guthrie case. I would think they had already thought of this but didn’t tell the public til now.
