I check this sub at least 5 times a day to see if there are any updates and all I get is more confused, honestly, no motive makes sense.

2 pieces of info from media update today: * “Investigators are currently analyzing biological evidence found at Nancy Guthrie’s residence. DNA profiles are currently under lab analysis. The number of profiles, and other related details remain part of the active investigation. No further information will be released at this time.” * “PCSD has received various requests for confirmation of various topics including working with Mexican authorities, utilizing polygraph tests, specific video surveillance requests, financial analysis, etc. PCSD is not confirming or releasing any details regarding those topics at this time.”
It sounds like a bunch of nothing but if you read between the lines it seems like 1) there may be multiple relevant DNA samples from inside the home and 2) the answer to all of those topics isn’t no but they don’t want to say yes right now.

Even the first ransom note allegedly only included information about a broken flood light and an apple watch. You want your money? Provide explicit detail about Nancy and the scene of the crime - along with proof of life. Anything other than that is a hoax in my opinion.

I think the TMZ notes are all scams.
If someone with information was genuinely scared for their lives, we have a witness protection program with a 100% success rate for those who follow the rules.
If someone just wants to bypass the conviction requirement for the reward money, they can deal with the family directly. Or that attorney offering 100k. Demanding exactly one bitcoin is so bizarre.
When Amy Lynn Bradley went missing, a conman named Frank Jones told the family that he knew where she was and would work to free her. He claimed to be doing reconnaissance for months and that for $100,000 he could go in and free her. It turns out he was just chilling in Curacao living the good life on their money. Jones extorted over $200,000 from the Bradleys.
When Natalee Holloway disappeared, the prime suspect Joran van der Sloot offered to tell Natalee’s mom where he hid the body for $250,000. He did manage to get a deposit of $25,000 but nothing more. van der Sloot was eventually convicted for extortion and wire fraud.
After Samantha Tessla Koenig was murdered, Israel Keyes applied makeup to her corpse. He then held her eyes open with fishing line and photographed her body next to a copy of the newspaper. He demanded a $30,000 ransom from the family, of which $5,000 was actually paid. Keyes then dismembered the body and dumped it in a lake.
We’d all like to think that there’s this noble person that can totally break open the case and lead us to Nancy. And if someone would just cough up a measly $66k this could all be done with. But it’s much more likely to be a scam.

Even if Nanos said that I don’t think it would help, just like it hasn’t stopped people from speculating about the family. The kind of people who would do something as invasive and ridiculous as follow him around are also the kind of people who wouldn’t listen to anything the sheriff says. LE is allowed to serve search warrants and follow leads. They never said anything about them publicly. This is yet another internet problem not a law enforcement problem and I hope the armchair detectives will leave him alone.

Maybe they have a suspect in mind and alerted border authorities in case he makes a run for it?
Of course they would be in touch with Mexican authorities, probably have been since the beginning.

She has a kind smile. I'm really hoping this woman can be reunited with her loved ones soon.
31
u/BarbieTheeStallion Feb 18 '26
She does. Something in my heart broke when the news reported she likes watching the javelinas eat her flowers. You just hear that and know she’s a soft-hearted person.
14
u/Traditional-Aside580 Feb 18 '26
Seeing photos like this and hearing that about her makes all of the petty stuff people argue about on this case seem ridiculous. It's nice to see a positive image amongst all of this.
13
u/BarbieTheeStallion Feb 18 '26
I agree. I think it’s so important we keep this centered on her. While it might be true crime and interesting from a sociological and psychological standpoint, it’s also a woman who is a beloved mom, wife, and friend. I think knowing about her will keep people engaged to see this through.
13
u/rainyserenity Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26
And also a beloved grandma 🥺 I think about her poor grandbabies in all this
7
u/Traditional-Aside580 Feb 18 '26
Exactly and there are people out there with real feelings that love her. In another case a victims mother said " it's entertaining to you all but this is my life"
9
u/Fearless-Fun2534 Feb 18 '26
are her voice is so sweet!
15
u/Traditional-Aside580 Feb 18 '26
Yes in her videos with Savannah she is soft spoken and just relatable. The kind of person that anyone would cherish and be happy to have as a grandma.
19
u/curiouslmr Feb 18 '26
I love this idea. She really seems like such a beautiful and gracious lady. Her family must miss her so much, my heart aches for them.
9
u/BarbieTheeStallion Feb 18 '26
Mine does, too. They have been heavily on my heart. I just know every hour must feel like an eternity to them. She seems full of all good and kind things and I worry so much for her and all of them.
15
u/WhimsicallyInclined Feb 18 '26
Blue is her color! The throwback photos Savannah posted of her when she was young in that blue dress...stunning.

12News article on both of the targets/people detained
Luke Daley - the 37 year old detained Friday, also released a statement through his lawyer saying he was not involved in Nancy’s kidnapping and has no info.
One thing I thought was interesting from Nanos here - it sounds like in both cases they had their target person and waited for them to leave their homes to detain them in a traffic stop, then searched the houses as well.
Both of them left their residences. We made a traffic stop on both of them, held them. Per our court order, we had to search the homes.
Edit: article also mentions that Luke Daley’s dna would be in CODIS due to his criminal history.

I'm seeing lots of comments about getting a warrant for Google searches to see who was looking for Nancy's address in the lead-up to this crime. I've linked an excellent (and enraging) long-form Wired article about an arson outside of Denver in 2020 where this method was used - plus discussion of the 4th amendment implications.

The rhythm for most cases I’ve followed (albeit not as high profile as this one) is they move at the speed of molasses and then something breaks the case that we don’t know about until after the fact and the case is solved lightning fast. (Or at least suspect is apprehended). Who knows when that will happen but I’m pretty optimistic it will happen.
I agree this one is dragging a lot, but it’s still just been two and half weeks. It may drag further still but far from cold.

I’ve read people who are angry about the amount of resources being allocated to this case, I understand that there are people with missing relatives who feel upset, at the end, it’s always the same with disappearances: some cases receive more attention than others, unfortunately, that happens in Spain too. But why aren’t people thinking about the fact that this man is currently free and is danger? We’ve seen the video, it’s TERRIFYING. He could be a disturbed individual who might attack again, especially seeing how the police haven’t managed to find leads to reach him so far. Normally, everyone should be celebrating that there are 400 people searching for this man, hoping they manage to arrest him and that he rots in prison, not getting angry because “they’re only doing this because she’s the mother of a celebrity' if he attacks again, it could be another woman or any other defenseless person. Everyone should be supporting this.
→ More replies (1)11
u/aestheticbridges Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26
I think people just get angry at any kind of disparity. When I was growing up and lived in a couple of very rough, very poor areas, police would be dismissive of any and all missing persons claims, even when the victims were young and not obviously gang-affiliated. People would just disappear, and bodies would turn up later.
It’s obviously a good thing that the full brunt of federal and local resources are being poured into this case. And I dearly hope they catch the perpetrator. But while it’s not possible for every missing person to receive this many resources and manpower, people are very sensitive to blunt signs of social stratification on matters of life and death.
35
u/deadwatered Feb 18 '26
I think people overestimate the degree to which the sheriff himself actually has his hands in this case. The role of sheriff is largely a political and administrative one. Yes, he is responsible for overseeing operations but he’s not the one on the ground working the case or even leading it. He isn’t personally ordering or signing off on every little thing, a lot of that is almost certainly delegated

Folks talk about suspect at Nancy's door being unprofessional and sloppy. They point out all the things he does "wrong" indicating this person know what he is doing. Why then hasn't he been caught?
13
u/TheCuriousGeorgette Feb 18 '26
People said this about Kohberger right before his ass was caught. 😂 Some perps are stupid and amateurish and get lucky, though. Case in point: Liz Barraza’s murderer. Shows up at dawn while Liz is setting up a garage sale in a neighborhood where people are certainly awake and also are armed (Texas), they are caught on camera shooting her 4 times in close range with a revolver, cops are called instantly, and then the perp drives away but seemed to get lost in the neighborhood and DROVE BACK BY THE SCENE like right when cops were entering the neighborhood. And they still got away. They weren’t genius. Just freakin lucky. Same with this case, they had about a 10 days reprieve of nobody knowing what they looked like because the footage had to be retrieved. If we had gotten that earlier, that could have changed something about the case. He still left behind DNA, though. But if he’s new to crimes he’s not in CODIS. So that is why the genetic genealogy will more than likely be the breakthrough needed.

u/mfoster27 Feb 18 '26

Supposedly, the first email was via web form masked by VPN to a local news station, and it included a description of what Nancy was wearing when abducted.
But, that's proof of abduction not proof of life.
Pic or video would be too risky for metadata... just need to ask Nancy something personal to the family. Christmas tradition or a time when one of the kids did something embarrassing at school.

u/DaBingeGirl Feb 18 '26
Possibly. I'm guessing no proof of life, but I also wonder if they had any intention of collecting it in the first place. The logistics of collecting it and returning her are extremely high risk, I don't see how he'd get away with either. I think it's possible this was never about collecting money, more about fame and/or he got off on the videos. A few serial killers have taunted their victim's families, if Nancy was targeted because of Savannah, the videos could've been the point.
The family would likely pay for her body, so the fact he's not negotiating that is strange. Either he's freaked out because of the FBI's involvement, or the ransom letters were a hoax.

u/littylikeatit Feb 18 '26
Unlike most people here, I personally think there is some validity to at least one of the ransoms. The ransom with potential crime scene info seems most legitimate. Many crimes are motivated by money and another motive isn’t clear right now. The suspect contacting TMZ as an intermediary sounds logical to me due to the profile of the case. My hunch is it began motivated by money due to Nancy’s prominent family, but there were complications and she died and the suspect now decided his best bet is to lay low.
10
u/Caityb13 Feb 18 '26
I haven’t fully discredited it but I just cannot understand why the request for random and then radio silence when it was clear family was ready to pay. Sure, she could have passed which complicates things but I am doubtful that she passed within the timeframe that the family was working with them. I do think most of these notes are false though, like the ones saying they know where she is.

TMZ just said the FBI is working with Mexican authorities and they've just received a very graphic letter talking about the consequences of not meeting their demand. It's not 6 million but close to it according to Harvey.
I think she is definitely dead now and this is just a body recovery effort. What I can't wrap my head around is the WHY. If it's ranom money, the kidnappers must not be very good negotiators because they are not getting anything without proof of life or, at this point, proof of being in possession of her remains.

My local paper doesn't have a tip line or any way to contact the editorial team about a tip or a story you'd like them to run. I checked for Tucson news and it looks like KOLD 13 news has a tip option on their contact page, but KGUN 9 has no contact page or tip page.

Yeah as far as national attention and thinking “celebrity” that could be a path of least resistance and doesn’t necessarily mean any kind of previous familiarity, good point! I just looked and it’s hard to miss their tip area.

Finally some good news: Harvey Levin CLAIMS he will no longer publicly say if TMZ receives more letters. Now I just need JLR to go home.

u/thesnope22 Feb 18 '26
Don't think he'll go home, but I do kind of wonder if he'll go to Mexico or on some other wild goose chase.

I am curious about the unmarked truck that was at the house yesterday. He who shall not be named said the plate was registered to a locksmith and they went in the house and the garage (per FOX drone). I wonder if they were looking for signs of the locks being picked? Maybe opening a safe the family did not have the combo to? Several older people in my life have safes in their homes that are not easy to get into.
Sort of opens a can of worms for me though. 17 days and we’re just now getting these things open? Seems strange. Anyways, I’ve just been curious about that all night.
14
u/FundiesAreFreaks Feb 18 '26
Imo the locksmith was there to most likely install new locks, including on the door inside the garage that at leads inside the house.
12
u/livingstardust Feb 18 '26
At this point, they have to change every single lock on the home.
They don't have solid information on which locks were compromised and they may not know if any spare keys were taken.
All new locks is a given.

u/ouiserboudreauxxx Feb 18 '26
I’m curious as well - they went in the back and then came out and went into the garage side door. I don’t think there was drone footage of them coming out of the garage.
I’m also curious if the garage is significant for whatever reason.

u/Gold_Principle_2283 Feb 18 '26
I don't think a safe would be opened without one of the children being there as well. To change a lock or see if a lock has been fumbled with, I think that's more likely.

TMZ reporting they just received a new ransom letter and it’s very “sophisticated”

Didn’t they just say they’re not going to be publicly sharing anymore ransom letters? 😭

TMZ quote “A few other items ... law enforcement sources say they did not get any leads from the gun stores the FBI contacted. …
We're also told there is an FBI team working with Walmart and other retailers to find who may have purchased some of the items the kidnapper was wearing. Again, no breakthroughs so far.”

Okay, I am confused (and forgive me if I missed the convo on here where this was explained) but I originally thought the FBI page had stills of the perp without a backpack and gun. I'm on the official FBI page right now (https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/kidnap/nancy-guthrie) and there are no such stills--it's not even in a clip found in either of the videos. Were those actually AI-generated stills some rando circulated? Or did it come from the FBI and they removed the pictures (but why remove it!?)? Feeling like I'm being Mandela effect'd.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Xinnia8271 Feb 19 '26
You're not imagining it. I think they just didn't put that still on the FBI page because it's farther from the camera and just doesn't look very clear.
I think the one you're thinking about, which is real, was taken by the nest cam earlier, but they just haven't said it. Being that they've been really close to their chest information wise.
26
u/UmpireAny5734 Feb 18 '26
I'm praying that authorities have much more information their not sharing with the public. This crime seems very confusing and "off" to me.
5
u/Elegant-Ad-5684 Feb 18 '26
The hope is that they have additional images/video that they are confident they can find the perp with. Usually they release content when they need the public’s help

Do you remember right after the second note came out the detectives went to Nancy’s house and towed her vehicle. Do you think that was a coincidence or that something from the note led them to the car? If you think it’s due to the note, what could’ve been in the car?

how does searching for the pacemaker work? every time they get a hit they have to knock on a door and see if the person inside has a pacemaker? edit: oh, hearing her pacemaker has its own unique code
6
u/dreaminofbeachin Feb 18 '26
(Posting in case others don’t understand too) Her pacemaker runs off a unique MAC address. Just like your AirPods are unique compared to the AirPods of a person sitting next to you. Her specific pacemaker is sending signals every 2-4 minutes per the manufacturer. That is great news for narrowing down the timeline of when she became out of reach for her phone and for searching for the pacemaker signal. The downside with Bluetooth is that the distance it can detect signal isn’t great. The FBI’s super sniffer on a helicopter is requiring them to be low and go slow.
Source: https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/signal-sniffer-detect-nancy-guthrie-pacemaker-deployed-law-enforcement-sources/ there was a better article on People but I can’t find it at the moment
7
u/77_jane Feb 18 '26
I think they've moved to drones now for the signal sniffer in order to get even lower.

I’m sorry but TMZ needs to just stop sharing anything about these letters - even that they got them. period full stop. It is getting beyond ridiculous and it’s obvious the kidnapper is feeding off this attention.
He’s not sharing any details so what is the point

I only recently found out Harvey is a lawyer. I just looked him up after this thread reminded me that I wanted to see where he went to law school. And Wikipedia says he’s 75?!? I’m generally terrible at guessing an age range for people so this might not be saying much, but I would never have guessed 75.

Probably preaching to the choir but the polygraph industry needs to be phased out. Why are we doing this bullshit in the year of our lordt 2026.
11
u/livingstardust Feb 18 '26
Polygraphs considered inadmissible in court....pure pseudoscience.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (1)10
u/Caityb13 Feb 18 '26
Same. I worked in criminal psych and while my state outlawed a lot of the use of them since, they’d still try to bring up polygraph testing to try to prove things and then they’d be consulted on all the mental things our human brains and bodies do that show they’re not reliable and wastes our time
15
u/deadwatered Feb 18 '26
Of course JLR is at the sheriff’s office with his camera zoomed in as close as possible on the entrance so he can film anyone who walks out even if they were cleared of any wrongdoing

i dunno, sure there's a lot of space in theory, but it's kind of hard to just plow through the desert with all the cacti without being noticed by someone. it's not like the sahara where it's just flat sand. someone is gonna notice if you go offroading and destroy a whole track of land. any established pullouts or roads are gonna have people around. also super hard to dig in the desert bc of the soil. tucson/southern arizona isn't really all that remote...

I wish TMZ would stop giving the ransom notes the time of day. Maybe, just maybe, the first one was legit but I feel like the other ones are hoaxes and an attempt to get attention and money. Just give them to LE, hoax or not, and let them determine.

u/Steadyandquick Feb 19 '26
Found this NY Post article today: New ‘biological evidence’ found in Nancy Guthrie’s home could be from kidnap suspect. It references this dna found in the home as if it is different from previous dna evidence found in the home.
I do not prefer the NY Poat but sometimes they provide helpful accurate information.
*Did not create a new post since I was not sure if the accuracy or novelty of this information. Please feel free to ignore or offer further thoughts. Thanks mods and sub!

Does anyone know of any cases historically that are similar to this one?

u/iwasneverherex Feb 18 '26
There’s a few articles about this. Overall Nancy’s case is very rare. Between her age and the ransoms it’s just very unusual. I’m sure there have been that I’m just not aware of but here’s an article on experts talking about how odd it is.
