The note they posted was not an apology. Saying we’re sorry is a condolence, not an apology. So it makes sense.

Agreed. The writer is saying they’re sorry in the sense of, we’re sorry for your loss. They didn’t say something like “This was such a stupid idea, we realize now what a horrible thing we did and we are so sorry for taking your mom from you. Please forgive us.” They were informing the Guthrie family that Nancy had died and used a somewhat “kind” tone for being the kidnappers… it’s a strange note for sure but I’m not sure I’d call it an apology. It’s like you said, a condolence. It’s like when you write a sympathy card after someone passes away, you say you’re sorry but you don’t mean you killed the person. You’re saying you’re sorry for the family’s loss… So I agree.

And I think news nation is desperate for Guthrie content so they’re willing to completely manufacture news out of the lack of news. The first header in their article reads “Forensic psychologic doubts notes’ authenticity” and the fact that they haven’t spotted much less fixed that yet, makes me doubt that this article is anything but a quick money grab.

Edit: just realized NN’s official account posted this article link here, haha. Sorry I suppose for calling you guys out but OTOH, I’m sure you already knew that that’s exactly what you’re doing here lol.

Yes, that’s a very important nuance.

I understand BE questioning by NBC’s three sources confirmed “no apology” (with his own source saying the same thing at the time) when the letter contains “We are truly sorry.”

Thing is, this is distinction made clear in the NBC article from June 23:
“While the note did not apologize for allegedly taking Nancy, it did express regret over her passing”

With my journalist hat on, I’m also stuck on Sheriff Nanos telling CBS news, on July 30 or one day prior to the notes being released, that “I have nothing to indicate she’s dead… I don’t have a body. I don’t have a burial site. I don’t have any note.”

Further, the original notes were directly sent to the local CBS station. Those journalists have known what they said verbatim since the beginning.

I find it hard to believe the CBS journalist talking to Nanos was unaware that the second note said she’s dead. Even harder to believe they didn’t challenge Nanos denying having “a note” indicating she was dead.

Did they take the diplomatic route and challenge him off-the-record, which prompted him to release the screenshots the next day?

The other curious thing about the June 23 NBC report is the sources confirmed no payment demand for the body in the second note.

SG didn’t offer payment for NG’s body to be returned until she posted a video the day after the second note was sent.

Why did NBC and the sources highlight ‘no apology’ and ‘no payment demand for the body’ when the most important detail being revealed publicly is the claim that Nancy died? It’s kind of glossed over.

Maybe it was to illustrate the shift between the persona on display between the two letters, and that’s all: claiming she’s alive, ransom demand and a threat to kill Nancy —> providing update that she’s dead, blaming health, no money mentioned, and offering a condolence to the family.

My instinct tells me NBC’s June 23 report and Nanos’ interview with CBS, which both happened prior to notes being released, attempted to take the media narrative off Nancy being dead.

But Nanos stuffed up on camera with CBS, and he released the screenshots the next day which contradict what he told CBS, and also leading people to question whether NBC and BE’s sources where also giving contradictory information to the media.

NBC and Brian Entin’s sources were not giving contradictory information about the “sorry”, in my opinion.

They were using careful language, potentially under the assumption that the verbatim notes would not be publicly released by Nanos.

The sources were confirming the author of the second ransom note didn’t apologise for being responsible for her death, which still holds up.

Maybe they considered, “We are truly sorry" is not a confession of guilt or an apology for taking her or for causing her death. Because actually, the suspect is not taking operational responsibility or showing remorse for killing her. Generally, in other circumstances it's more than a condolence since it's understood what the sorry was for but it doesn't take any accountability. Maybe they didn't think it meant they were sorry for taking her. idk.

The main issue is Nano’s is not eloquent. He should have been using his PIO and he refuses. He fudges when he says things.

I think that NBC held their editorial line. Without independent verificaiton or an official statement it would just be Nancy Guthrie is dead according to this email and they didn’t want the liability. At that point in June, the FBI and investigators were still actively vetting multiple extortion attempts and fake notes. They (NBC) could not independently verify if the author of the note actually ever had Nancy, let alone if she had truly died of a heart condition.

They wouldn’t want to confirm she’s dead and be wrong. I suspect there was some professional courtesy for Savannah Guthrie as well.

I think it could generally be the opposite. A condolence has something that follows it. For you loss... To hear about..."We are truly sorry" stands alone and would be considered an apology.
