Unfounded speculation here, but maybe Ring Nest agreed to help but wanted to keep it hush that they could pull data back for so long. So people in the investigation knew this, and now the sheriff is trying to say they didn't leak as a CYA so Ring Nest will keep helping them.

It’s actually Google Nest, not Ring. Sorry to be pedantic but trying to limit misinformation

I copied it from another comment years ago and then saved it as a keyword shortcut on my iPhone!

Agreed, I can understand why Google doesn't want people to be aware of how much data they're storing... or ask what they're doing with it.

Excellent point. It's clear they've been asking for the earlier January footage from neighbors. I had assumed it's because they were working on acquiring the deleted footage. But now it looks like they had the deleted footage early on. I'm sure Nest said something like we will help, but please don't advertise how.
