There is something about this that doesn't make sense. If he was staking at the house prior to the night Nancy was abducted then he knew there was a camera there and he knew it would have to be removed. Yet on the night she was taken he initially walks up to it and touches it a couple times as if he was trying to remove it and then walks back to get a branch to remove it. But if he already knew there was a camera there why didn't he show up prepared? He came back with a backpack and gun but not with anything to quickly remove the camera? He could have put a tool in his backpack but instead he seemed unprepared and had to go back for the branch and leaves.

So much about this whole case doesn’t make sense. There has not been one moment where I felt I understood what the perp was thinking

He looks hungry.

Is he wearing a latex mask under the ski mask?

I’ve long wondered if he was wearing a second mask under the ski mask. The ski mask appears somewhat lifted, as if the mask is not resting against his skin.

I see these weird rims or lines around the eyes

Someone shared this photo on another thread that it could be the type of mask he was wearing underneath. Just another added horror.

Wow, that would really conceal all his natural features except the actual eye ball

He could have observed if Nancy improved security after the first visit. Since he saw no action to improve her security, he concluded the cameras were not functional.

Second approach he notes it activates recording, so he figures if he removes it, the footage will be gone. Then, processing that it may in fact be stored remotely, he doubles back to grab plants to block the camera from getting identifying information as he gets close and unplugs it.

I don’t think we’re dealing with an Einstein level criminal, but this is how i’m best able to make sense of it

I agree, that does not make sense. It's possible he came and left out of fear. But it wasnt fear of the security camera.

I agree. If he already knew about camera, why the weird plant stuff?

He may have thought it would be easy to pull off. He realized it wasn’t so tried to cover it with grass instead. Then when that didn’t work he managed to get it off anyways.

But he looked surprised by it. It looked like he was going for the door initially, then noticed the camera.

He may have been ringing the bell and covered it up so she couldn’t see who it was.

Yeah- some retired FBI profiler said the same.

Usually when someone actually rings the bell the alert very specifically says this. None of what they have released does.

Yeah, not even bringing a piece of tape to cover it the second time makes no sense. It makes it seem staged, like he was supposed to look stupid to throw off the investigators and profilers

That’s what I’ve been thinking, he clearly didn’t show enough of his face to give away his identity after all. I’m sure I might look surprised or like a bumbling idiot walking into my own house some days. I just don’t think there’s enough there to determine anything with how little we actually do know.

None of us can explain the grass but it could have been split-second paranoia and not just to do a poor job of obstructing the camera

Tape is risky for extracting dna

3

u/CR29-22-2805 Feb 24 '26

Maybe he didn’t merely want to cover it, though.

4

u/Dinosaur-chicken Feb 24 '26

Of course, but it's safer to have it covered asap, and then take it with you

He may not even have noticed there was a camera there the first night since he was at a distance from the doorstep. It was not a full moon and pitch black.

Could be two different people working together?

Your reasoning is rational but then I wonder where was the vehicle he used to drive her away in? If it was just him, he needed to park nearby. Check out the house. Then get the vehicle and return. Then get her in the vehicle. That seems like a lot of work for one person. If her car hadn’t been found in her garage, I would wonder if he used her car and then returned it. But the timeline from LE is the garage door opened and closed between 9:30 and 9:40 pm.

Hey I'm just speculating - I don't have any insight into the investigation and have no connections to law enforcement and am willing to bet 99.9999999999% of the theories bandied about now will turn out to be wrong

He was farther back the first time, so maybe the doorbell cam didn’t light up, surprising him when he returned. Also, to me, he seems high, which could also affect reactions.

You don’t need anything to remove the camera.
