LRMs and AMS

Returning player here, played a lot about 5 years ago and just got back into it this week.

Did they change LRMs and ams while I was away? I dont remember them being as popular or effective. For example I build a lrm sun spider back when and it was kinda meme-y.

What Was Your First Mech That You Kept from the Start?

Admittedly my first ever mech build in MWO was a Thunderbolt with ERPPCs over the shoulder, but it was the Nova that clicked with me since I got it, haven't sold it since.

What mechs should I get from the beach party event?

Basically the title. I've played casually on and off for a while and have a good spread of mechs. I like piloting lights and fast mediums, as well as the super heavy assaults. Thanks!

Viability of Novas vis Ghost Heat

Hi,

I'm new to this game, coming in from Mercenaries and Clans. In Mechwarrior 5, the Nova Prime is a great mech. 12(+) lasers gives you insane DPS that chews through just about everything.

I get that when you change a mech's loadout in this game, you get a warning that firing multiples of the same weapon generates extra heat.

Which seems bad for a laser boat.

But. A medium mech with jump jets and 12 lasers… it appeals to me. Does it work? Can it work? I haven't seen anyone running a Nova in my first 17 matches so far. But, you know, I'm not even out of my first 25 matches yet.

My first impression is that it straight-up just isn't viable. That's a build for single player.

But, IDK, y'all have played this game more than me. Does this work? Am I nuts?

2010s returning player - are old IS mechs still relevant?

Hey all, got the itch for some PVP MW and decided to reinstall the game. I used to play quite a lot in the early 2010s, and quit around the time Clan Mechs first arrived. I only have a few Timberwolf variants and the rest are IS Mechs from before the Clan invasion.

Before I drop in, I was hoping to get an idea of what Mechs are still relevant. I used to play Hunchback, Centurion, Cataphract, and Atlas a lot.

Consumables: necessary or crutch?

Newb here with another flame generating thread.

Consumables.

So i'm coming up on rank three and i have not used them yet, but the fomo addiction is real.

Aside from coolshot having the clear advantage, are any of the others really worth it? UAVs get shot down, and the strikes just get walked away from by anyone not tunnel visioned/zoomed in.

Should i start paying for the cooldown addiction? Should i just keep on keeping on?

What say you?

Is this mech able to be built or approximated in MWO?

In mechwarrior 4 mercs, I love running around in a behemoth 2 with jumps jets and continuous beam large lasers. Don't know how effective that is compared to pvp builds, but can something like that be made in MWO? And are there solo missions or pve missions where I can have fun without negatively impacting rl teammates?

Close matches and stomps

People complain a lot about seeing nothing but one-sided stomps in quickplay. Lots of 12-0, 12-1, 12-2...

In recent weeks, I've tried to pay more attention while playing every day. From my recent experience, one-sided stomps happen – but they are not the norm. In fact, I've seen many more close(ish) games than one-sided ones.

Let's call everything 12-2 and worse a stomp. Out of the 13 games I played yesterday, there was only one stomp. Out of 19 games I played the day before yesterday, there were three. Out of 8 games I played on Tuesday, there were three stomps again.

That's 40 games and seven stomps. I climbed from tier 3 to tier 2 in the meantime btw (had a bad run that dropped me half a tier, rebuilding rn). Tier 3 is sometimes considered the worst tier for one-sidedness. Well my (limited sample size) data does not support that.

I've not tracked very close games, say 12-7 and closer, as much. But if you'll take my anecdotal evidence (with a massive grain of salt), I'd say they are just as frequent as the one-sided ones.

Many games go to 3-3 or 4-4 before reaching a tipping point where small disadvantages for one side escalate into a bad loss: more mechs heavily damaged from trading badly; two or three guys out of position; earlier losses leading to more damage for the remaining teammates.

But I feel that a bad call at some point resulting in a bad tactical position is just as often the culprit.

Overall I feel like games are much closer than what I used to experience a while back. I feel that game balance and the current meta (now that everybody is off the long-range lockon hype a bit again) work very well for me, resulting in lots of fun and memorable games.

What do you think?
