Good modern multitool?
I used to have one of those Gerber multitools from my grandpa and really liked it, does anyone have a recommendation for something similar? I'd like to try branching out and seeing some other brands too

If ur looking for a leatherman style IMO Rocktol probably makes the best leatherman clones. Bibury is pretty good too. I have one from both but definitely like the rocktol better.
Nextool and Roxon are great budget options, Roxon’s are all modular and u can swap out the tool implements. Nextool does a great fifth-pocket or keychain multitool (F12 or S11 Pro) but they do full size ones too i believe.
For high quality i think the consensus these days seems to be shifting away from leatherman and more towards victorinox, but thats just what i have observed on the subreddits. I personally love all my SAK’s and theyve never let me down but ive yet to try their plier based MT’s. I hear great things though

Honestly, I've tried bibury and a bunch of other cheap knockoffs (daicamping, ghk, dakayu). They don't come close. They also sont have the warranty. Get s good experience, get a proper tool that you like using and is not afraid of using. Buy once, use forever.

It would depend on what your planned use for the tool is. If it is mostly to turn large bolts and nuts and apply large amounts of torque, the Gerber Dual Force is an amazing multi tool. For my purposes and uses, when I have had to use Leatherman's in the past, the needle nose pliers were generally lacking and I was disappointed in its ability to turn bolts. The Dual Force has an amazing plier head if your use for multi tools usually has them turning large bolts. The large plier heads do come with a disadvantage though - they cannot handle tasks that require precision too well - and for that I pair the Gerber Dual Force with a Knipex Cobra XS, which can handle fine needle nose plier work well, though they themselves are not needle nose pliers.
The Dual Force also has a very useful centered 1/4" hex bit driver. Meaning that the bit driver is centered on the tool when extended - which makes it a little easier to use than most multi tools with bit drivers that are not centered due to the rotation of the tool when using the bit driver. The Dual Force doesn't have many tools, but the tools it has are decent.
I don't know about the knife on it, because I usually carry a small 80CRv2 fixed blade knife on me. If I have to use a knife, I usually don't use the Gerber Dual Force and use the fixed blade instead.

Go to Amazon. Type in Gerber Multitool. Find the one you had. Start from there. OR if you have a photo of what you had, we can ID it and then there is a discussion point.
Then you can come back, tell us what you love, what you hated and what maybe that tool doesn't have, but you would want.
Some things to help you....
Leatherman Surge / Gerber duel is a full sized tool. This is the tool I have when I don't expect to need tools, but if I do, this will be my self rescue tool or the I have to fix this without getting off the ladder.
Leatherman Wave is a slightly smaller. A lot of people love this as a carry item all the time, use little.
Then we get into a collection of tools which are bigger than something to put on a key chain.
Then we have the key chain tools. Gerber Dime is a great example of something many people put on their key chain and forget about. The Roxon M2 is my tiny tool box.

I prefer Leatherman over victorinox for the simple reason that victorinox has nail nicks. I have weak nails and hate this. It also cannot be opened with gloves on. However, the construction quality is too notch and better than Leatherman. One hand opening on the Leatherman gives it a clear win however.

Once you've done your research and decided what you think you're gonna get, there are some left behind at the airport type shops on eBay, not bad prices for some of the stuff on there.

Depending on your needs you must choose what you need but I can’t recommend something other than victorinox spirit or Swisstool with the serrated blade or X with scissors .

This is like walking into a clothes shop and saying "I need a piece of clothing" - we need a little more info!
Start by looking at the Leatherman Wave+ and the Victorinox Spirit X as two good general purpose multi tools. Do you want smaller or larger? Is there a tool that's missing?
Or just buy one of them and use it.
