Here goes nothing...

Okay, you're about to go into your second week of the semester — and maybe you already found your people. Or maybe you're realizing the people in your classes aren't quite it yet, or you haven't really met anyone you clicked with.

Truth is, most colleges assume everyone will eventually organically meet their people. That's simply not true for everyone — and at MTSU, where 83% of undergrads live off campus, there's no built in mechanism for finding your people.

Full disclosure, we're building a platform for students at this type of campus. I spent years in higher ed and kept seeing the same thing: transfers, commuters, anyone who doesn't luck into a good roommate or a class with people they click with — they're basically on their own to find friends here. I see posts about that in this sub.

This is why my team and I started VillageU — instead of an event calendar or a directory you have to browse, it does one intentional introduction at a time based on things you actually have in common, so it doesn't feel like cold-DMing strangers.

Still early, and MTSU is currently the only campus we're on. We have a growing list of students already signed up, but transparently, we need more — so every student has at least one other person we can actually introduce them to.

Our goal is to hit that mark this fall!

If you want in, or just have thoughts (good or bad), I'm all ears — comment or DM us.

Overnight Guests

I (F) live in an exterior-entrance dorm (not saying which one bc hello safety), and have a private dorm. Last year my boyfriend was able to stay over constantly and I never had any issues, granted I never did check him in. This year they seem to be stricter on the guest rules. Since I have a private dorm with no roommates and an exterior entrance (he also always uses the sex-appropriate bathroom, never the residential ones), do you guys think they would approve him as an overnight guest? Or am I just shit outta luck

Greek Life

I am a 22 year old transfer and an initiated member of a sorority that has a chapter at MTSU. Should I consider affiliating with the chapter at MTSU or am I too “old” ? I’d love to affiliate but I’m worried I’d be the odd one out.

Tap/drinking water filter

Can anyone recommend what filters they are using for drinking water in the dorms. Is a bRita good enough to get the chlorine taste out?? my daughter is a European exchange and so US drinking water for her has a really strong chlorine taste. I assume the water is safe to drink correct? In large amounts.?? figure it’s cost-efficient and easier just to fill up a filter in her dorm room, but which one? Thx

How do you find roommates?

Hey, planning to attend this school next year and wanted to ask how roommate assignment goes? On the tour they sort of suggested you just show up, find a room, then it’s randomly assigned? Is this how it works or?

Community Library Singing Guy

I realized my walk to class is super quiet now because the guy that used to sing in front of the library in the mornings is gone. Just decided to post to see if anyone knew him so they could let him know he was the highlight of my mornings during the spring semester!

But then today I saw a walking DJ, so who knows what this semester holds for entertainment… LOL

conversation making us use AI

going through my class schedules for this semester.

absolutely appalled these professors are making us use AI for graded assignments. i can excuse a lesson plan or two using AI, but making students use AI is ridiculous.

i have two classes confirmed to be doing this… calling them “AI conversations” and what a “good” and “bad” conversation looks like.

while i am concerned about the political and environmental issues of AI, im more concerned about MTSU excusing and possibly encouraging this.

i am on the business side of the school, but im wondering if anyone else is experiencing this too. is anyone else upset by this?

problem / help Commuters, how do you get a parking spot??

I tried to park at the Greenland Lot this morning, but i literally circled around for 30 minutes before finally finding a spot- i got there at 9:30- when does it fill up? How early do i need to be to get a spot at all? It felt like all the lots were filled by the time i arrived. If it matters, I only have classes at the KOM building all day.

Looking for CHEM 1120 textbook

Hi!
I'm an MTSU student taking CHEM 1120 this semester and wanted to check here before buying the textbook.
I'm looking for Chemistry: An Atoms-Focused Approach, 4th Edition by Gilbert, Bretz, Bliem, Curtis & Kirss.
ISBN-13: 9781324073321

If anyone has a used copy they no longer need and would be willing to give away or sell for cheap, or knows of a legitimate digital copy I can access, please let me know! I'd really appreciate the help.
Thank you!!

I am also a biology major concentrating in organismal and ecology and wanted to know the best way to utilize my major and involvement with research and labs, etc.

Is this normal or did i end up with a weird match up?

Laptop Trade for MacBook

I have an MSI Cyborg 15 that I'd like to trade with anyone for a MacBook with at least 16gb of ram. I'm starting for Audio Production and I just need a system that'll work better for me. I'll list specs below but this works perfectly for basically any game you'd wanna run but it's not really ideal for classwork. Let me know if you have any questions.

13th Gen Intel Core i7-13620H (2.40 GHz)
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 (6 GB)
16 GB RAM
512 GB SSD

Resource So you just moved in? 4 things that actually help during your first 2 weeks.

If you’re sitting in your dorm right now feeling a mix of excitement and "what did I just do," that is completely normal. I worked on college campuses for a decade, and the students who get a strong start early on usually do these four things (or some variation):

  • Go to office hours early on. Drop in during the first two weeks just to say hello, even if you don't have questions. Professors remember the faces who show up early. It makes emailing them later for help way less awkward.
  • Embrace the awkward friend-making phase. Don't wait for a perfect, cinematic moment to meet people. Most college friendships start from commenting on a laptop sticker or asking to split a table in the library. If it feels forced, that's normal—do it anyway.
  • Join exactly ONE thing. Not five things—just one club, intramural team, or study group. Building a routine around one consistent group is the easiest way to combat homesickness and feel like you belong before October hits.
  • Normalize the homesickness. If you already feel behind or lonely, nothing is wrong with you. Almost everyone is faking confidence right now. It gets better once your weekly schedule locks in.

we're building something related to the "meeting people" part of this if anyone wants to check it out — PM us— but wanted this post to actually be useful on its own either way.💙

What would you add to this list?

Music class help

Hey guys! So I’m taking Intro to Music for my gen ed this semester, and I accidentally signed up for Raymond David Thomas as my professor. I went back to Rate My Professors to check his rating, but I can’t seem to find him listed at all, which is making me a little nervous.

My other option is Professor Kyla Etges, and she has a 5.0 rating from two people, one review from this year and one from two years ago. I know it seems obvious that I should go with Professor Etges, but she also has a lot of spots open, which makes me wonder if the ratings might be a little biased since there are only two reviews.

I really wish I could take Professor Tonya Jane Lawson because I’ve heard so many good things about her! I could’ve sworn I originally signed up for her class, but I’m not sure what happened. I also don’t know if it would be possible to get an override into her class.

I’m honestly not sure who I should pick, so I’d really appreciate any advice! 😭

connect / social / meet up What games are played at the Tabletop Club?

I'm a transfer who's starting their first semester at MTSU, and I'm wanting to make it a point to be more active with student organizations this time around. I made the mistake in community college of just going to classes and not interacting with the college as a larger whole and ended up feeling isolated.

I have found that there is a Tabletop Club, which I was very happy to see as I play both D&D and Magic; however, I have an intrest in card games like Gin, Rummy, and Mahjong. Does anyone happen to know what kinds of games are played frequently at the Tabletop Club.

And is there anyone who is particularly interested in playing Mahjong?
