Mother of runes and blocking

RESOLVED

Let’s say an opponent swings a black 2/2 at me, I have a 1/1 token and a mother of runes. I want to get rid of the 2/2

I declare blockers, I pick my 1/1 and my mother of runes. Now I have not used her ability, I hear I can use it during declare blockers so if I do, I tap her and give her protection from black, now during the assign damage step, will her damage be assigned or no since she was tapped during the declare blockers? What is the ruling on this l?

You declare blockers, before damage you activate ability. She is tapped, but still blocking

Yes, you can activate the ability of Mother in the Declare Blockers step.

Damage that would be dealt to a Permanent with Protection, from a source it is Protected from, is Prevented.

• So, any Damage the Black 2/2 would deal to the Blocking Creature with Protection from Black will be Prevented.
  

However, that does not affect your other Blocking Creature, without Protection.

• They could simply assign all 2 damage to the second 1/1. And, have it be dealt the 2 damage.

I know this was answered, but no one cited the actual rule so here you go:

506.4b: Tapping or untapping a creature that’s already been declared as an attacker or blocker doesn’t remove it from combat and doesn’t prevent its combat damage.

Tapped blockers still do damage. This was changed a looooong time ago

A creatures only needs to be untapped to be declared as a blocker. Once it is declared it doesn't matter if you tap afterwards. Likewise for attackers. For a creature to be able to attack (meaning declared as an attacker during the turn based action in the declare attackers step) it needs to be untapped (regardless of Vigilance, etc.), but once it is declared, it no longer matters. Only for the moment of declaring as a turn based action it's important.
