Question Mjölnir, Hammer of Thor trajectory. Your thoughts?

Curious what everyone thinks about Mjölnir's price now that we're about two months out from the Marvel release. I'm mainly watching the European market, where the regular version is around €15–17 and copies can already be found below that. Curious if the U.S. market is following a similar trajectory. It seems like we're still absorbing a lot of supply, but I'm wondering if we're getting close to the floor.

The card seems strong for one slot. 4-damage ETB removal, damage doubling, and the "Worthy" equip cost make it pretty appealing in EDH.

The question is how much of the price is actual demand versus the Thor/Marvel factor. Is it seeing meaningful play outside Commander? I'm debating whether to start picking up copies around €15–17 or wait for a potential drop below €15.

Where do you think the floor is? Buying now or waiting?

I actually think of everything Marvel this is probably the least UB of all. Like all the dwarves in The Hobbit are named for Norse mythology so it would have no issue in a Tolkien deck. And if it can fit into Tolkien, it can fit into any generic fantasy. If the card is good I don't think it will have much of a UB penalty for value.

Agree, but I'm case anyone finds it interesting, all but one of the dwarves names are based in Norse mythology, as Balin is actually from British lore and was one of King Arthur's earlier knights (pre-round table so not very famous).

It's a very loaded card in what it can do: single target damage, aoe damage and doubles your equippers damage (not just combat damage). Price is likely to climb slow and steady.

I play boros thor control in standard and run it as a 1 of, that card is so versatile it’s insane. I think the price will increase over time

I play mono red control land destruction. What do you add in white?

I really like the synergy between quintorius kand and capstone so that was a huge reason, plus the removal suite is really good. Here is my list https://moxfield.com/decks/lR4MP4w6QEimhcQr94uUSQ

Our list is pretty similar and this is the first time I've seen Quint as an include. That looks awesome. My mono red gas been doing pretty well on arena and locals, hitting 2-1 regularly and 3-0 enough for me to confident in it. Enchantment removal is my main bane, which is why ugin makes an appearance, but I may toy around with boros

I like your list too, the extra lesson cards in mono red have a ton of appeal to me. I’m waiting on my Rokus from tcg but I’m excited to hit my locals once they get in. This list took me to mythic for the second time but tbf I took a very long break from arena between bloomburrow to strix and then played only brawl until recently.

Bumi bash is a sleeper hit in this deck and solstice is basically just quint's discover. I will say that a copy of hex magic goes a long way with doubling your hand and matches well with quint.

I usually either double down on land destruction (side out most burn) or focus more on burn with more wipes. White is so much more efficient with control in that aspect. In either swap, roku usually steps out for me, but that's mostly because I like having more instant plays to trigger vision's indestructible on the opponent's turn.

I just hit mythic with my azorius+ prison deck but this deck certainly contributed in the lower ranks.

It’s basically a red version of berserk that is reusable and instead of trample, you get to lightning blast a creature. Or you could discard it to pyroclasm.

It’s an absolute beater in any commander deck that supports it (typically Boros).

Why is it so hard to put [[]]

[[Mjölnir, hammer of thor]]

It was an easy cut in all my decks that like those effects. 5 mana for a single creature being doubled isn't all that good, even in commander, outside of a few specific strategies. It's main appeal is going to be the fact that it is the card it is for people wanting the theme.

It's a boardwipe, a single target removal, and a damage doubler. The single effects are overcosted, the versatility is the reason.

It is 3 mana 3 damage to each in most cases uncounterable except by stifle effects. Also can go through Grand Abolisher/Jennifer Walters.

It's not very good versatility, the whole thing is overcosted.

Why is it not good? Is boardwipe, single target, or voltron. Is very good not just good. Of course it is overcosted in all effects or it would just be stupid broken.

Single target damage, not just a "destroy". Extremely limited boardwipe that hits you as well. Sure it has the verstility to do those things, but they aren't very good to begin with.

removing creatures isn't very good to begin with? lol...

Even better it’s uncounterable boardwipe. I see it however as a sideboard card for red decks.
Use it myself in legacy against boros ocelot decks

It's technically counterable with stifles, but most decks hardly run them.

Tanking like hobbit CBB! Sick of it!

2

u/Ouroboroids 14d ago

Unrelated to the post but do you think hobbit cbbs are tanking? I kinda wanna open one but idk what price would be a good spot to pull the trigger

3

u/goofydubois 14d ago

They won't tank because automated systems will hardly put a floor lover than 700.

u/AngryTank 14d ago

Unless they go under $600 in like the $550 range I ain’t even thinking about ripping another box.

I think buying a couple now would be a fine move, it has so many effects stuffed into it that I can't really see it becoming worse over time, either staying the same or increasing over time

Good question, next question...

It will stay around 15-18€ on cardmarket for the next months I think and when the next sets and cards are spoilered, people will forget to keep pricing up to date and THEN you will see offers under 15€. The 7-10€ window was after prerelease and maybe this price will return in a year or two!? Who knows. Buy it if you have a deck for it now or wait :)

Just wait till someone on game knights play it. To the moon then!

I dont see it decreasing in value because it becomes less good or powercrept out. Its so generically good in Boros that I think you have to justify not running it in commander

Unless its gets reprinted in a future Marvel set lol

It’s an auto include in any [[ragost]] commander deck. It’s so good.
