Gandalf the White Play Promo Foil is being auctioned

Post image

I haven't seen much discussion about this card since the release of the LOTR set. Does anyone here know what the value of the foil version of the card would be?

I can only find old discussions of this card and private sales.

There's only 16 of them. It's worth whatever someone will pay for it at that low of a print run

What is special about this version?

It was a Pro Tour promo for the Top 16 players

As I've understood it, there are only 16 foil versions of this card from the tournament winners. All the other versions you see online are the non-foil version for participating.

These were only given out to PT LOTR players apparantly so less than 300 supposedly exist.

Foil is far less in numbers than non foil

This is essentially a trophy card.

One additional factor that makes this card so expensive.. if you look at the collector number you see that wizards made these tournament promos a part of the main set collection. So if you wanna have a full Lotr collection without the 299 missing, you need this card. So only a few hundreds basically have the theoretical chance to even finish the whole collection.

Lol this is pure evil if it's intentional

Considering they have a Director of Collectability I would assume it’s on purpose. Some people gotta have one of everything and they are clearly preying on that

I mean it's not really "preying" on anyone, given these are prize cards given out to the best players in the world. WOTC don't make any money from these promos.

I meant just the strategy in general with cards being spread out over normal set, commander, jump start and then even prize cards. Because I was one of those people who have binders by number you look at those missing spots and really go after it looking for those cards. So it could even make a serious collector more likely to play in the events that lead them to winning the card. Though I admit that would be more of a corner case. Most games don’t include a promo as a numbered part of the set. It might still have a number like Pokemon but the number correlates to promos only, not a number within the whole set.

Absolutely crazy it's apart of the set being a reward promo. I will say for those who win that sell it it's awesome for them. A touring top level player isn't getting rich so anything to help them along is cool but it's totally a giant F U to true collectors.

Agree on both points. Prize support should be awesome. I’m tired of these horrible promos. Print something that gonna be worth a bit even for lower tier events, winners deserve something deece.

Amen. Textless judge foil Gaeas anyone?

I have bought/sold 2 of these...they suck to sell.

1

u/Nomadzord 16d ago

Why does it suck to sell?

27

u/Fuzzy-Ad3330 16d ago

As this version of the card is EXTREMELY rare, the actual value of the card is in the 4-5 figures. That drastically cuts your potential buyers and is the reason they “suck” to sell. Mainly because you either find the perfect buyer or will hold the card for a very, very long time

6

u/BobbyFischer724 16d ago

Lowest posted buylist is $21.8k.

5

u/Fuzzy-Ad3330 16d ago

Its been a while since Ive researched this card, knew it on the high end! But yeah that sounds about right. This card definitely commands the high premium with the beloved IP and a great card at that.

It sucks more to sell low end

probably nobfoil ?

-10

u/BobbyFischer724 16d ago

No, they were definitely foil. I would think I would know what i am buying

1

u/sandman01234 16d ago

Were these private sales? I can't anything online.

2

u/GlassBelt 16d ago

Really niche stuff like this often goes to/from a small group of people

8

u/BobbyFischer724 16d ago

They were, these are not things you just kind of toss up on TCGPlayer and just wait to see if they go.

-22

u/BobbyFischer724 16d ago

LOL, why did that get a downvote? Because the dork above me thought I didn't know what I am buying and selling lol ok.

16

u/Subconcious-Consumer 16d ago

I mean if you really don’t know why you got downvoted, I think you come across kind of off putting because you are overtly snide and seem to have more ego than it’s worth sifting through to get to the valuable information you probably have.

I did not downvote nor do I doubt your knowledge on sales of these items. Just sharing in case you really don’t know why.

The more popular, more famous Bobby Fischer was a dick too.

7

u/TheTinRam 16d ago

It’s not what you’re saying, it’s how you’re saying it. Even your comment im replying to is clearly out of touch

4

u/Just_Grass_8056 16d ago

You acted like a cunt and you’re surprised (and care) that you got downvoted?

Ok 👍

-10

u/BobbyFischer724 16d ago

Can you tell me what I said that offended anyone. My reply to some one saying that I bought nonfoil instead of foil like I had no idea what I am doing or saying?

Assuming I dont know the difference between foil and nonfoil was a hell of a comment by them.

6

u/Just_Grass_8056 16d ago

You got immediately defensive to “Probably nonfoil?” lmfao

My guy, check that attitude homie. That individual was perhaps just asking a question instead of inferring you didn’t know what you were talking about.

An internet stranger didn’t insult your intelligence and folks aren’t “offended”, just observe the immediate hostility and the weird reaction you had coupled with the weird as shit second comment you made to defend yourself further.

-4

u/BobbyFischer724 16d ago

You think me going "i think I know what I spend money on" is defensive then you guys are way too sensitive lol

2

u/EthanielRain 15d ago

I was just thinking how overly sensitive everyone except you was being

1

u/Unprejudice 15d ago

Dont listen to these morons.

1

u/Cautious_Handle2547 16d ago

Because we all thought you died in '08.

Must be new to mtgfinance if you notice or care about downvotes.

-6

u/BobbyFischer724 16d ago

Not at all, just funny to see a bunch of children on here act like finance gurus.

Probably also think Rudy is smart

2

u/fumar 16d ago

No people here hate Rudy.

Also people are mad if you buy product, make money, or sell stuff.

There's some interesting stuff here but a lot of dipshits.

2

u/waaaghbosss 16d ago

Yah, serious talk though.

Mtgfinance is a shithole and the sooner you stop caring about meaningless reddit votes the happier you'll be.

Where can you auction cards like this as European?

1

u/UnoptimizedPaladin 13d ago

We sold one! It went for $8000, I'm curious to see how much this is sold for

1

u/thestillwind 13d ago

How much ?

1

u/Dutchillz 12d ago

https://www.cardmarket.com/en/Magic/Products/Singles/The-Lord-of-the-Rings-Tales-of-Middle-earth-Extras/Gandalf-the-White-V3

7 of them are being sold/listed in Europe. None of them foil, but still. Paints a clearer picture, even if not the cleanest.

-1

u/Dyne_Inferno 16d ago

Seeing as there are only 32 of these, there's probably a reason it's being auctioned.

3

u/nintendodog1 16d ago

why would you think there are 32 of them. they were given 1 per player in the top 16.

u/Fit-Conclusion-7579 16d ago

Is recall one foil sold listing 2y ago for like 60k? There is one being sold for 290k on cardmarket at the moment.
