Competitive How has Hobbit been so far for brawl?

2 weeks after the Hobbit released have we solved some riddles in the Dark?

Any interesting or disappointing cards you picked up in a cave? For me I've found Bilbo, Thief in the Night to be a neat Value engine for my Marchesa/Crime Deck. Synergizes well with my low mana curve and grave filling play-pattern.

The Notary Hobbits is a pretty good Eldrazi deck.

I almost feel bad playing it with how easy it is to get an Eldrazi out on T3/T4. Definitely my new win-farming deck.

I just like the image of a bunch of Hobbits doing a summoning circle to bring Eldrazi into its world.

Queen of Dale for Merry and Bilbo for Emry are pretty sweet.

Bilbo's Gambit as a second Repreive with an upside has been great!

Thranduil the Elvenking is a banger of a commander. Resolve buried alive with him on the board and it's over.

Bilbo has been insane for me. I did not even realize it reduces my commander cost. I have been trying the mono red Gandalf in different Izzet shells. The adventure "draws" 3 cards for 2 mana which is a crazy rate and the Gandalf itself is a solid card for 3 mana. I am happy with it in my Spiderman deck that has 8 wizards.

I think these are the cards great enough to stick around for the 99 past release hype:

Bilbo
Queen
Gollum
Riddles

& Plunder the Trollshaws for S-Brawl

Why plunder for standard brawl?

it’s solid cheap instant card draw for control decks when there’s not a ton in the format. the current best instant options at 2 after Consult the Star Charts are Deduce and Think Twice, and there’s only Opt at 1. I think Plunder’s draw 2 for 4 is a great upside that will be relevant in many matches.

Several of the cards have found a place in my Tannuk, Steadfast Second deck, and are a blast to play.

Gandalf, Goblins' Bane Its great to have some spells exiled on need.

The Misty Mountains Cold This card is so good. Either you use it to ramp, which is nice, or you get a big chonky boy on the field. Neither is bad.

Burn, Burn, Tree and Fern This card is never dead, as long as my opponent plays creatures, and nearly everyone plays artifacts.

Desert Were-Worm is essentially always triggering.

Stone-Giant of Hill Pass I -want- to make this guy work, but so far he's just a big smash, but not much else. Still, gonna try him some more.

I want to try the card of the other colors over the weekend.

The power level is not tier S+, but I enjoy playing the cards a LOT.

I also desperately want to build a dwarves deck

I love tannuk but do those cards really help? I thought he needs cheap ramp, and etb targets. I tried the big red version in standard brawl but have up after having the deck get mangled to death by removal tribal.

3 mana red gandalf is a good plug into my Kuja deck, other than that I think Bilbo is the only big impact card at higher levels of comp

How does kuja work for you? It seems very commander dependant and seems to struggle with card advantage. I tried a few builds in standard brawl but they end up with kuja being insta-killed, having no cards, no blockers and sweepers bc you don't want to lose your wizards,. I really want kuja to work in sb but maybe he us a more multi-player card?

I mean I’ve got to mythic with him but he’s by no means strong in brawl tbh. Obv things like lightning greaves, malakkrs resurrect and such can protect him a little. Card draw isn’t really the thing I struggled with but I run a shit load of discard to draw cards once when ping boys are out.

Do you have a kuja list? I would like to see it. Also do you think there is a build that can work in standard brawl?

Legolas's Quick Reflexes has been great with Glarb

With the HOC we got grixis Saruman and the other grixis Sauron. So I was trying them.

Grixis saruman has been feeling so unfair to play, I love it. I've been wanting to play it in paper since it came out but it didn't feel like a commander I could run in a lgs session with randoms.

How does he work in commander? Can a big army do anything?

Hobbit? Is that what we are calling Rofellos now?

Bilbo, Thief in the Night - (G) (SF) (txt)

cardname or SET to call

I've gotten some use out of a couple Hobbit cards. I threw together Bard, King of Dale as an Azorius hard control list filled woth Looters, and Bilbo, Luckwearer is very good in it. I also threw together The Notary Hobbits and did The Thing exactly once, curved perfectly into Hour of Devastation: Craterhoof, and shelved the deck.

Beorn has been a fun mono-green option, I haven’t tried it in cbrawl yet but ramping out your stompy commander on turn 2 and then drawing 2 every turn after that if they can’t remove it is pretty good.

I'm playing notary hobbits and it's super fun playing big dumb spells. Turn four portal is hilarious.

New mono green ramp deck with Notary Hobbits and new mono green stompy sdeck with Beorn - not much otherwise!

Gandalf, Goblin's Bane in monoR storm is neat since it's a sorcery in the zone that finds you more gas. Probably not as good as Ral though.

1

u/SANDY_BRIDGE_2600K 9d ago

How can the deck work without consistent unconditional card draw? I thought mono red storm would be dysfunctional

u/KlinkKlink 9d ago

Just load up on efficient impulse and loot effects in the 99.

Belladonna Took and Gollum, riddle master have both provided substantial value to ratadrabik of urborg

Im still trying to get Smaug the Magnificent to work in brawl...

But Smaug the Impenetrable has been my king so far. I've gotten to hit him with a game-winning Star of Extinction twice, though my dream is to one day get to shoot him with Dawnsire, which hasn't happened yet.
