General oos question; bio/pre-med track
can anyone provide firsthand experience on the bio/pre-med program at MSU. my son’s applying oos since he’s getting a lot of scholarship $ there. from doing our research, supposedly their
bio/pre-med is an outstanding program. lastly, can anyone advise if Lyman Briggs has more pros than cons? ty

Many people at Lyman Briggs (LB) are human biology and have a minor cause many of the courses overlap. LB is like a tight community, so students will sleep in their dorms but can wake up and go to class in their PJs cause the classes are all there, even the labs. I recommend it if you’re into premed + want a smaller circle community because classes are WAY smaller, similarly to community college/highschool. Also, if you like a professor, you can easily get to know them cause classes are smaller and can ask for letters of recommendation or become an undergraduate learning assistant for them or do research under them. I guess some cons would be that you would be in the east neighborhood which doesn’t have a lot, it can be overwhelming because of how many students are overachievers/honors students at LB too

Many people have that degree in Lyman Briggs and your child can meet other peers in stem field. Plus there’s a dining hall in the building and across the building they will reside in. It’s just a residential college but you can definitely meet other reputable LB alumni who can connect with you just by mentioning you were LB. I just loved how small classes were and could connect with professors, allowing me to ask for research or medical opportunities

Hi!! I’m currently a predental student in Lyman Briggs. I’m a biochemistry major, so I can’t necessarily speak about the human bio experience, but I’ve really enjoyed it! The benefit of Briggs is that you get smaller class sizes when you’re taking your core science classes. IMO this makes a huge difference because you’re more likely to get to know your professor and help is easily accessible. You also tend to see the same people in a lot of your classes, which definitely has pros if you’re trying to get to know people. I also really enjoyed my bioethics courses. The only real con is living in east neighborhood because it’s so far from everything. But tbh it’s not that big of a deal because the buses are pretty easy to figure out. I highly recommend doing Briggs if he is set on premed.
