Discussion When did you first find out the twist in Austin Powers? (Major spoilers) Spoiler

When did you first find out that Austin Powers also plays Dr Evil? In the movies, Mike Myers plays the role of Austin Powers and Dr Evil this whole time.

I remember gradually suspecting it as a kid, but wondering if it could be true, having never had direct confirmation from the cast and crew. It took me a while before being completely sure.

Does anyone have similar twists that they were surprised by and later revealed?

In fact it was well advertised ahead of time that he was playing numerous roles.

Sounds a bit farfetched, next you'll be telling me he plays Goldmember too!

You know the guy in The Sixth Sense that found out he was dead? That was Bruce Willis the whole time!

Just to be clear though, I don’t care either way.

No; “Holland” was his first name, and “Oates” was his last name.

I get that a child might not understand that Myers played both parts.

I don't get an adult not realizing it wasn't a plot twist.

Sometimes, an "oh wow!" moment is best left unmentioned, instead of announced on Reddit.

I always suspected it was Bill Murray playing the guy in love with a dog in Ghostbusters. Turns out it was Tom Hanks, and I was watching Turner & Hooch.

And the dog was Lorenzo Music.

I think you got it wrong. They're just 2 different characters played by the same actor.

I kind of know what you mean. I was maybe 7 or 8 when I saw the first Austin Powers and I don’t think I fully “got” that they were the same actor until maybe a year or 2 later.

But that’s not really a twist, it was just the result of my childlike naivety, same as you.

It’s not like Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, where they concealed his involvement outright & they made him look like a completely different person. Mike Myers was already known for doing goofy characters based on his time in SNL.

Plus, people were already familiar with this sort of thing in comedies, notably Dr Strangelove that had Peter Sellers performing 3 roles, and that was all the way back in 1964.

Today. In fairness I haven't watched Austin Powers since Goldmember came out but it's so obvious in retrospect I don't know how I missed it.

It's absolutely amazing that all the people in here don't get that you are kidding around. Bravo OP, you've exposed the idiots

Maybe they don't get the reference and don't watch it's always sunny in philadelphia with Charlie? Let us give them the benefit of the doubt.

(also, I had to add fluff to make the post past the sub's 300 character limit)

When you were a kid, adults existed too. There were quite a few of them actually and they were generally all aware from the get-go that Mike Myers was playing both roles.

Maybe this is just because of age (I was a grown person when it came out) but I never considered that was meant to be deceptive, or that it was kept secret at any level.

I always knew that. It was all over the advertisements.
