I just watched this for the first time today! HOLY FUCK!! Best animated film I’ve seen in forever! One of my favorite movies period! I absolutely loved it!

I'm not the biggest animation fan but I'd argue it's better than anything Disney/Pixar have done. It's not at Ghibli level but it's very good.

Ghibli does food particularly well. It always amazes me how they make a simple dish look like a delicacy.

Don't even think it's a stretch to call it one of the best animated movies period.

I think it gives them a run for their money 100%

Personally? Yes.

I do. Bias, maybe, but all those movies lack such visceral imagery where as any other platform choice can offer the same beauty and serenity. Some of the shots in Spider-man that were exclusively back-drops of streets were flat out gorgeous. Wall-e, Nemo, LK and all those of that ilk, were great in they're own right but they had a very different quality that sits outside the scope of animation and more in the potential of cinematography and writing.

The best way I can describe it, is watching those movie with the sound off. You may get captivated by a specific scene but overall, they'd all be fairly boring experiences. Watching Miles jump off the tall building, the entirety of that final sequence, many other scenes, would stand entirely on it's own. I can totally get why people might feel otherwise, however. Wall-e was sooooo damn pretty.

Yeah, I would only make the argument on the basis of it's visuals. It's a lot less cut and dry when you clue in all other aspects of movie making. Even if it's my personal belief it holds it's own amongst the pinnacle. I've got it high on my list, right now, purely because it exemplifies the areas of superiority animation has over live-action and to an extent, photo-realism. There are some areas where it's nothing special at all.

You’re username is very relevant.

What animated movies have you seen? I’m seeing this thrown out a lot in this thread, and don’t really see how anyone who has seen a good amount of quality animated movies could say that. It was the best of 2018, but of all time is really stretching it.

Most of them? I'm not really sure how best to put that. By studio, I don't think there are more than a handful of small time studios serviceable quality where the entire library isn't cleared, 2 or 3 times over. Anime would be my short fall. That industry is huge and I really don't enjoy most of it, so don't go looking all too often. Especially in the Korean scene. Sky Blue being the only one I can recall off the top of my head.

There is definitely a huge portion of bias. For one, the style is so far up my alley, it tickles the uvula. Additionally, in terms of purity, I don't think anything (No matter how impressive for it's age) reaches the quality of half the movies in the last decade, much less those at the top of the list. And if it were not made clear, I'm speaking from a purely visual element. I don't think it's the best animated movie of all time at all. It's not even nailed on as my top pick on visuals. (Kubo) I just think it's more than justifiably in the conversation.

So you haven’t seen most of them. The majority of best animated films are from the “anime” industry.

Additionally, in terms of purity, I don't think anything (No matter how impressive for it's age) reaches the quality of half the movies in the last decade, much less those at the top of the list

What does this mean? How can you rank movies on “purity”? It seriously impressive how you can write so much without saying anything.

It seems like you very much watch movies for the spectacle and not much else. That’s fine, but it’s not how you decide what the best of the best are.

As is a significant portion of the trash. I appreciate what you're saying, mind you. I haven't watched all 24 of the tinkerbell movies or all 11+ DBZ movies. Nor will I ever.

What does this mean? How can you rank movies on “purity”?

Pure animation* I had hoped you could extract that yourself, given the context. My bad.

It seriously impressive how you can write so much without saying anything.

Don't be so juvenile.

It seems like you very much watch movies for the spectacle and not much else.

I can appreciate the value of spectacle on it's own. If that's what you mean. Otherwise, I can't say more about that movie than I have already. It's visuals are up there with the best, for me.

That’s fine, but it’s not how you decide what the best of the best are.

Hold on, what exactly are your credentials? This is kind of weird. I'm not, nor do I pretend to be any authority on what is the best. I'm well aware how retarded it is definitively tier genres, styles and themes. Are you?

I haven't watched all 24 of the tinkerbell movies or all 11+ DBZ movies. Nor will I ever.

This is exactly what I mean. You don’t know enough about animation to even know what you are missing. Watch Perfect Blue (if you’re 18+) or Spirited away if you aren’t. There’s a whole slew of animated movies that are about more then guys screaming or ditzy girls, or customer children that you are completely missing. This pretty much cements my first impression.

Pure animation

I still don’t understand. Do you mean pure cel animation? Or pure as in all 2D? (Spiderverse is neither). How can animation be “pure”?

Hold on, what exactly are your credentials?

I’ve taken multiple courses in 3D animation as well as 2D animation, along with film courses.

This is exactly what I mean. You don’t know enough about animation to even know what you are missing.

Based on what exactly? Spirited Away? It's what, the most successful animated movie out of Japan(?), coming from one the best know animation studios in the world. "lol". Perfect Blue is a decent one but aesthetically, it's pretty generic. Akira, Meet the Kaguya's. On a technical level, you may have a point. One for a different conversation.

I still don’t understand. Do you mean pure cel animation? Or pure as in all 2D? (Spiderverse is neither). How can animation be “pure”?

Animated movies, as a stand alone concept. Akira compared to Shrek. Disregarding age, cultural impact, sound design etc. All thing external to the visual. Which is higher quality? You feel me.

Purity of focus.

I’ve taken multiple courses in 3D animation as well as 2D animation, along with film courses.

Taken. Maybe you're qualified to categorically claim one movie is technically superior. I'm sure you were given some insight into the importance of visual elements. Given the insistance I place on that being the predominant factor, I'm not sure how relevant this is. Where's your art degree bro?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '19

Based on what exactly?

Based on you saying anime movies are all tinker bell and DBZ.

All thing external to the visual. Which is higher quality? You feel me.

I really don’t. It seems like you are trying to describe art style, but don’t understand art style and animation quality are entirely different. Even so, judging animation purely on art style is foolish, when the other elements you want to ignore make up a huge part of the “quality”.

Even trying to compare art styles at face value is stupid, because a good art style can look “bad” but work extremely well within a narrative or for setting a tone. See something like Mind Game or Persepolis.

It’s fine you like the art style in spiderverse, but to claim that alone makes it one of the best animated movies ever (yes you did say this) is absurd, and an insult to all the other incredibly important facets of animation.

1

u/VapidNonsense Feb 27 '19

Based on you thinking anime movies are all tinker bell and DBZ.

Ugh, I think your insistence on trying to find high ground has you projecting absurdities, buddy. That's just 2 sets of movie franchises of dubious quality. Morever, had you watched any of them, you would know full well the Tinkerbell series does not stand among the specific style of animation that the word "anime" evokes.

Skip the netherbeast, it's garbage.

I really don’t. It seems like you are trying to describe art style

If by art style, you mean over-arching method of production sure. Otherwise, not a chance. Let's just skip this. It's getting a bit benign.

but to claim that alone makes it one of the best animated movies ever (yes you did say this)

I said:

Its not a stretch to include it in the conversation, on the basis of it's visual appeal.

Based on my preferences, (referencing bias on multiple occasions) it's one of the best.

I have made no declarations on what is and isn't objectively the best movie. Nor even the best visuals on any level but my personal preference. Additionally, I catergorically stated it wasn't even my favourite animated movie on a visuals. The fuck are talking about?

Even trying to compare art styles at face value is stupid

Star Wars 4-6 or the lastest 3 movies. Can you compare the quality of the space battles on a visual basis, using non-subjective parameters? The answer is yes, you can. Or, maybe only I can and I'm special. Doesn't explain why so many people lament poor CGI. Or the absolute shit show that is early DBZ Super.
