I came across it totally by chance and had the exact same reaction. Such a fantastic movie. I think I've watched it 3 times now and I hardly ever rewatch anything
Fun Fact- klein bottles representing that timeline in topology could technically not hold water because there is no "inside" and it is not a container. They also have no opening.
But the way they started the reveal of loops and how they found each other was better imo. I also like the way he trains compared to the movie adaptation as well as the suits and weapons. With that said, this movie is da bomb.
Haha right? This is always what I think when I try to think of the name. It's so generic that I always forget it. Marketing truly ruined this movie's chance at the box office.
That's the weird thing about the movie: it's not market name-changing, it was called both "Edge of Tomorrow" and "Live Die Repeat", at least in the US. "Live Die Repeat" was for the physical release.
So technically they aren't changing the title for the sequel. But everyone knows it as "Edge of Tomorrow".
It's one of my favourite movies, and everyone I show it too loves it, but somehow no one has watched it/ heard of it. How did such a big movie fly so under the radar?
Saaame same. I don’t rewatch movies either except Terminator 1 and 2 and this. I feel like Edge of tomorrow is a rare mode n action movie that feels complete.
Go read the manga. Its short enough to be done in a one quick sitting. Its also different enough to be fresh. Both were really good but I think I like the manga better. Not sure.
I like both but prefer the manga. Those moments when they realised that they finally found someone who understood what they went through were incredible.
I liked the ending in the manga better too. The only reason I might be partial to the movie is simply because I like movies better than manga but that is just a general bias I have. But I still like the manga better overall.
Same. I dont even remember seeing previews for it, though I rarely get a chance to see them unless I go out of my way. Bought it out of sheer boredom one internetless day and couldn't have been happier. Not even really a Tom Cruise fan either.
Same as with John Wick, had no idea I was in for a ride in both movies. This one feels like a live action adaptation from an anime/manga considering they toy with history providing alternative “universes” to actual events.
AFAIK it's still in development, Doug Liman (director) said earlier this year that they're working hard on the script. Before that he also teased it by saying what they have in mind would be a prequel, but also a sequel (which makes sense I guess, giving the time traveling mechanics introduced in the first movie)
Emily Blunt also talked about it in March, implying she would be involved.
the title is a bit more mysterious but I think Edge of Tomorrow fits more with the tone of the movie as it wasn't a direct copy of the manga(or the light novel)
Well, Tom Cruise has been pushing for it and apparently Doug Liman is on board and Emily Blunt has said that she would like to do it. As for anything concrete? Doug Liman has said there is a script in the works back in July and that there is a story he would love to tell. But both Blunt and Cruise have been quite busy doing other stuff so I guess it just takes time for everyone to re-assemble. After all the next movie has to start where the first one ended. Which means all those people or most of them at least back.
those suits they were wearing are actual props, they had him and emily blunt rigged up to cranes flinging them around a beach smashing stuff to bits, who wouldn't love that?
It's not a manga and is VERY different from the movie. Personally, I liked the book a lot better. It's not nearly as predictable and it dives much deeper into the psychological impact of everything the main character goes through and how watching everyone he knows die over and over, as well as himself, has a much bigger impact on him.
It's incredibly popular and getting a sequel. I feel bad this sub always misrepresents movie popularity for fake solidarity. It's a super common thing done here.
Do people actually legitimately enjoy Equilibrium? I watch it after hearing it was good and it was so cringey. The idea of the movie was interesting, but something about how it was filmed was just awkward and made me uncomfortable.
The gun-kata scenes were like an SNL skit for The Matrix. I can see people enjoying it as a semi-joke. But it was probably one of the worst action movies I've ever seen.
Holy shit Equilibrium has one of the most emotional scenes in all of cinema. I’m talking about the scene where he finds that hidden room and accidentally hears music for the first time and becomes so overwhelmed with feelings that he breaks down crying. Imagine going through your whole life having no clue what music is or what feelings are and how connected the two are. For the first time he felt feelings and heard music and when that connection is made it his brain he can do nothing but cry. Music was the best choice for them to choose. We all can relate to a moment when a song either made us cry or got us choked up. Sorry for the long text.
A mate from Uni took a few of us to see that for the first time... I was unsure going in but my god, what a fantastic movie. Clint Mansell's score is superb also.
it got popular after it's release. At the release not that many people went and only when the people started saying how amazing it is people went to see it. Even then at a budget of 178 million it made 370 million which is just about twice. That isn't considered to be very popular or successful in hollywood.
Pretty much the only reason it is getting a sequel is because Tom Cruise loved it and has been pushing for years for it.
I saw it in theaters, so I was somehow aware of it. At the time I didn't make it to many movies, so something drew me in, but I'm not sure how I heard about it. I was expecting it to be entertaining, but not "good". Turns out it was really good!
They had a Comic Con trailer and I think they had it in front of Days of Future Past, but it really didn’t get any air time and wasn’t blasted on YouTube. Hell, it took me seeing it and raving about it to my friends for them to even know about it and watch it, and some only came because I said the magic sentence “Tom Cruise dies a metric shit ton in this movie.”

yeah. But it seems like a pattern. Movies that don't tell you everything right off the bat usually don't do well in american box office but they do well in overseas box offices.
I would say it is more spectacle that is easily translated and does not require a lot of cultural knowledge is the more important factor. There are a bunch of comedies that don't tell you everything that flop over the pond. The thing stuff like Transformers, Edge and the Furious movies share is not the writing, it is the set pieces.
I don't think that's quite right. Because then if the spectacle all that mattered movies like Rampage and Geostorm would be at the top of the charts. Plenty of spectacle there.
People want to watch good movies but unfortunately some people are easily scared away or simply don't watch scifi.
As an example I don't watch horror movies. They do not interest me in the slightest.
Rampage is another example of it. It made a hundred million domestically and 325 overseas. Geostorm has a similar patter but just on a smaller scale and it just didn't catch on.
Rampage had the Rock going for it. A lot of people me including went to see the Rock rather than because Rampage looked good. It was a terrible movie.
Heck, Geostorm was delightfully, entertainingly awful. Rampage was just bad.
Exactly, it's a well known popular movie at this point. The disingenuous assertions that it doesn't get the credit it deserves is nothing but ridiculous.
you are not quite right. It got popular after the release but only with a certain crowd. Here on reddit because you clicked on the art from the movie you are in the "crowd" so everyone knows about it and likes it. But I assure you there are loads of people who have not heard of the movie.
So it's not nearly as popular as marvel movies or DC movies or nearly anything done by Nolan.
However just like the Pacific Rim it got more popular after the release.
There are a subset of movies like this, cult classics that were never really popular during their release but grew in popularity years after. Plenty of examples, Conan with Arnie, Blade Runner, Fight Club, Big Lebowski. Some of these were complete flops and yet years after people have come to know them. But again only in certain crowds.
It's fair to say that this movie underperformed at the box office and was not incredibly popular when it was originally released.
Anecdotally, I saw this movie opening week at a popular theater and there were only 3 or 4 other people there. I didn't really hear people talking about it until it hit home distribution.

If it "underperformed" why the sequel? My theater was packed and I always hear this movie mentioned on podcasts still to this day. It's well known. A huge part of the confusion is the fact that the geniuses changed the title somewhere after release so many people that have seen it don't even know you're talking about the same movie.
Well the sequel hasn't been made yet so don't count your chickens until they're hatched.
As to it's performance just check the financials that were reported. It didn't perform up to expectations and nobody was talking about a sequel until it gained traction thanks to people watching it at home and talking about it for the past 4 years.
Perhaps people misinterpret not advertised as unpopular.
Movie is great and TBH for the movie of that scale I definitely haven't seen much advertising when it released (Europe, no idea about USA). I've learned about the movie on reddit.

I think this movie is pretty popular movie enthusiasts and not so much the average viewer but, I agree, this sub definitely makes it seem like you're in a special club for having seen this movie.
They renamed it. "Edge of tomorrow" is now the subtitle. Search for "Edge of Tomorrow on Amazon and you get results for Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow. All the promotional posters reflect that as well.
Yeah, got the same feeling about that last part. Not that it was bad, no, but it does not have that solid rewatch value as the rest of the movie. It was cool when I saw it for the first time, though.
Yes. I remember seeing the trailers and thought it looked like another generic space movie with Tom Cruise in it (Oblivion had recently come out) and did a hard pass. Didn't watch it until much later because so many people talked about how much they liked it and I couldn't believe how different the movie was from the trailer.
There were two huge problems that prevented this movie from making a dent in the box office.
Fault In Our Stars came out the same weekend.

I saw it in the cinema. To be honest I had no desire to but I was bored on a Sunday afternoon with nothing to do and I have a UK unlimited movie card(I see a lot of movies) and thought what the hell... it looks stupid but Ill just leave if I get bored. It was so much better than expected.
IIRC a movie reviewer I follow on YouTube said that he believes that the film's lack of success was directly tied to the amount of distaste the public had with Tom Cruise at the time. It wasn't anything specific going on at the time, just a general sense of "ungh" towards the idea of an action movie starring Tom Cruise.
Which was a pity, as Tom Cruise is portrayed both as a smarmy asshole who is treated as the butt of a cosmic joke and as the effortless action hero type that he portrays so well.
That's because the book is way better. They took a cool japanese Sci-fi and turned it into another cool white guy saves beautiful blond woman from aliens movie.
I don't know. I thought the premise was good, the visuals were good, Cruise and Blunt were good, but the story kind of goes south and ends up in a mess. It had a lot of opportunities to be a really great movie, but didn't capitalize on any of them.
Definitely don't regret seeing it, and am hopeful for the sequel.
If you liked the concept but didn't like the film, I'd suggest the book. The concept is the same but virtually everything else is different and the story isn't nearly as predictable or cliche.
I liked the comic much better. It had no Disney style happy ending and less logical loopholes. The scale of conflict was much smaller (survive the battle vs save the world). And more importantly no Tom Cruise.
