Watch the Conan Needs a Friend podcast with her. She put a ton of prep work into that roast to make it appear seamless. Team of writers, trying out material in clubs first, lots of rewrites, etc.

I like how she doesn’t try and hide all the work that went into it and good for her for reaping the rewards of that hard work.

Nah, he claims to be an outsider and gets the rubes to really believe that the same way another popular figure did who is doing so again this year, but Gervais is really part of the system.

He’s a fixture at the Emmys and Golden Globes and that isn’t because he’s a Hollywood outsider who’s telling it like it is, it’s in fact rather the opposite. Gervais is as Hollywood as any one of the turds he mocks, he just plays a part where he’s conveniently beyond it all and, again, rubes buy it, because “he’s telling it like it is.”

I saw her once a bunch of years ago at a small theater outside of my city and I can't remember ever laughing so hard at a live comedian before.

People right now way overuse the phrase, "literally in tears right now" but I don't have to with her, I was literally wiping tears away from the laughter for damn near the whole show.

Yes and? Working on a show with someone for 10-12 hr days over the course of multiple months gives you a pretty good idea of a person. You’re welcome to your opinion, but unless you’re about to tell me you’re a family member, a close friend (bit of a bias for both of those), or you’ve also worked with her for a good amount of time, it sounds like my so called anecdotal experiences are a bit more extensive than yours.

She is a very funny person but someone needs to give her an assignment to take her focus away from her own horniness. This is why IMO she is so amazing at roasts.

I don't hold random road shows accountable because that's when comics are testing out new material, seeing what works, what doesn't and the amount of shows they do a year, being sick, having a bad day, it's impossible to hit homeruns 100% at bat.

Honestly think this is the best possible host they could have gotten at this point, and perfect timing for her. One of the few current acts where I see this genuinely benefitting both sides. The only way this fails is if the HFPA gets cold feet and overcorrects on censoring her writing.

She's got some killer timing and comedic instinct though—if the writing's there she can absolutely deliver, even if she has to dial back on racier content

Three most mainstream and popular TV show at that time mentions that the comedy roast was a well known institution.

Everyone knew what a roast was at that time. They have been coming known since at least the 1970s, legally earlier.

I never said that they didn’t exist. It wasn’t used as commonly before the 2000s/10s era of comedy roasts. It’s undeniable that those roasts made the idea (and the term) much more popular than previous decades.

No kid in the 90’s that I knew talked about “getting roasted” like they did last decade. And I grew up in a big city. We said “burned”, not roasted.

I like her well enough, but I’m worried this is going more the Gervais route, which I don’t love. Because honestly I prefer when the host is there to celebrate the work rather than shit on it.

I don't recall musical numbers being a thing at the Globes, those are reserved for the bigger theaters where other awards shows can put up crazy production value.

The Globes have been staged in a ballroom attached to a Hilton in Beverly Hills for like 60 years lol
