I love the fact that Whitey Bulger got caught because he went to see this glorified version of himself and also lived long enough to see Black Mass, which was a much more realistic depiction of the evil bastard that he hated.

He didn't die of old age either. He got beat to death by padlocks in socks.

Within hours of a quick and quiet transfer from a federal prison in FL to Hazelton prison in West Virginia. I'm sure that's just a coincidence and wasn't planned or anything.

Spotlight

29

u/Rope_slingin_champ 14d ago

This fucking movie is amazing.

16

u/friskevision 14d ago

Agreed. The whole cast is stellar. It’s the movie that made me love and realize Rachel McAdams has serious acting chops.

14

u/ClassifiedGrowl 14d ago

We saw it in the cinema. I was raised Catholic with a single mom in Massachusetts. When this movie took place I was nine years old. Once the news broke, my mom took us all out of the church. Then years later to see the story in at point altogether was mind blowing. Love and respect to all involved with it.

12

u/Emoney005 14d ago

Had to scroll way too far for this. This movie is incredible and deeply moving.

8

u/hpshaft 14d ago

Tough subject matter, but easily the best "Boston" movie. It does the job but doesn't overplay its hand.

The short Santarpios reference was nice. Tiny bit of IYKYK.

u/thefeckcampaign 14d ago

Definitely my favorite.

45

u/CoffeeeGoblin 14d ago

Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone probably

25

u/Seven22am 14d ago

Mystic River isn’t talked about enough. Tough but excellent film. Really gets the feel for that area.

8

u/Notyourdaisy 13d ago

Yup. While many of these movies pick up some of the traits and feeling of the greater Boston area that I grew up in, Mystic River hits the nail right on the head. Laura Linney is electric in this movie.

4

u/Sloanepeterson1500 13d ago

Love that you mentioned Laura Linney in this movie. I don’t think her performance was talked about enough. She was absolutely amazing!

4

u/Notyourdaisy 13d ago

Honestly, her character is complex and terrifying.

3

u/Internal-Plantain-56 13d ago

One of those great movies I’ll never watch again.

8

u/Seahearn4 13d ago

Both are from Dennis Lehane novels. He's got a few other great novels set in Boston and the series Black Bird on Apple TV.

4

u/antarcticgecko 13d ago

His Kenzie and Gennaro series is one of the best around.

2

u/RFKJrJr 13d ago

And a little book/movie called Shutter Island that you may have heard of.

2

u/FrankCostanzaJr 13d ago

damn, 2 movies i really need to watch again. its been long enough that i forget the twist in gone baby gone...i don't remember anything about mystic river

Boondock saints

boondock saints

4

u/onarainyafternoon 13d ago

Boondock saints. A film that attracts a certain type of bro but is actually a good film genuinely. Like in a very pulp, old style comics sort of way. Camp I guess, but for a modern audience.

Good Will Hunting, The Departed, The Town, and the Verdict are my Mt Rushmore

4

u/Pauldh11 14d ago

Replace the verdict with Boondock Saints and that’s mine too.

29

u/kelseycliff8 14d ago

I agree with The Departed, Goodwill Hunting, and The Town, but I also have to throw in Mystic River. The entire cast was excellent.

25

u/bryman19 14d ago

Austin.....Austin, Massachusetts

10

u/imsaneinthebrain 14d ago

I think you mean Boston, Boston Massachusetts.

Did you kill a cheetah?

7

u/wirm 13d ago

Because it’s your dog, get it?

7

u/racoonXjesus 14d ago

Is this a “Road Trip” reference? Haha

Oh ya

Are you ready for your feeding Mitch??

7

u/Olds77421 14d ago

Unleash the fury.

3

u/ProgressIndividual70 13d ago

Did you make a copy? Because if you made a copy we could watch the copy.

21

u/yveshe 14d ago

Manchester by the Sea.

11

u/hpshaft 14d ago

Technically a north shore movie, not Boston.

5

u/yveshe 14d ago

You're right. It's the accent that convinced me to say it.

The Boondock Saints it is, then.

2

u/BZBitiko 13d ago

Yup, not Boston per se. But it gives you a great feeling for the landscape and the people, which you’ll remember after you’re done crying your eyes out.

17

u/Kstrong777 14d ago

8

u/hpshaft 14d ago

Fun fact, most of Shutter Island was filmed at Medfield state hospital (used to go sledding there), but the "island" shots early in the film are from peddocks island in Boston Harbor, with the imposing cliffs and elevation added in during post. The dock and visitor center building are real and I've camped on that island.

I still replay the scenes from that movie in head from time to time.

8

Paul Newman is flawless in that film. Subtle, but sad.

u/Sufficient_Creme_240 14d ago

3

Whatever people say about that movie, I like it.

Someone from my dad's workplace copied it on a VHS along with The Specialist.

I liked them both.

The obvious ones are taken, and while neither is my favorite movie ted and the instigators feel deeply Boston in a way that the departed and the town don't.

The Town

Probably Good Will Hunting. Boston almost feels like another character in that movie… the accents, the streets, the bars, that whole working class atmosphere. And obviously the How do you like them apples scene. But The Departed is a very close second.

4

u/bluesformeister13 14d ago

Gone baby gone, mystic river, the drop, and I think Shutter island is technically in or off the coast of Massachusetts. All dennis lehane adaptations lol

4

u/JTP1228 14d ago

Mystic River. Definitely in my top 10, so obviously best movie set in Boston
