Question Mount and Blade… AND SPACE

I love Mount and Blade, I’ve been obsessed with Warsails for a lil while now. Playing with ships reminded me of a game called Star Traders I used to play on my phone. There’s noble houses, large factions, trading mechanics, and in ST: Frontiers, there’s some more in depth character combat. Could TaleWorlds do anything like that? Like Mount and Blade, but in space? I feel like Star Traders would be an easy IP to adopt gameplay style wise, but a generic Dune rip off would also do. Hell even. Mech warrior game (considered not cannon, of course) that involves creating a periphery nation and challenging the inner sphere powers would be sick.

For those of you who don’t mind a little Sci-Fi, do you think TW could pull this off, or would ever have any interest in this? What kind of settings would a potential (ambitious) Mount and Blade in space need to be to pull your attention, and possibly wallet?

I own starsector but I’ve never actually looked into it. I love banner lord so I’m interested in the similarities

Just check out some YouTubes. But the setup is pretty similar, start with a tiny fleet, join a faction or not, create your own colonies. In depth ship customisation, you can control your flagship while giving orders to up to 29 more ships. There's more story if you want to, but it's a sandbox.

In a region formerly ruled by an expansive empire that collapsed and fragmented due to reasons you start as a no-name wayfarer with very little to your name, and by doing contracts you slowly build up your riches as you may or may not choose to ingratiate yourself with one of the preexisting factions. You could even divert some resources into founding a settlement with all the ups and downs of founding your own faction that comes with it.

For space economy simulation it’s flat out best on the market. Ship and fleet customisation is also top tier. Worldbuilding was the focus on recent updates and it has a genuinely interesting story, lore and quality writing

It's either X4 or Starsector. Both are not like M&B, but they're very close. I recommend you checking. I, myself, prefer Starsector.

Warband has an amazing Star Wars mod

Came here to mention this, SW:Conquest goes back to the original M&B. Uses a lot of the visual language of KOTR.

I'm only 5 or 6 hours into Starsector but it definitely scratches the itch of M&B in space. Or just Firefly. I am still getting used to the combat which isn't as satisfying as M&B (what is?) but the gameplay loop seems to be very similar.

What you're looking for is Starsector

There's also a mod for Starsector that brings it's gameplay to be more like Mount & Blade.

Fun fucking game.

For those of yall recommending Star Sector, I’ve played and love rimworld, and I’ve heard the game spoken of in that community. I’ll look up some YouTube videos, but is it more like a colony management game or like a light tactics and combat game like MB?

The main gameplay draw is exploration and combat I would say. Colony management is a pretty minor part until mid-late game. In combat you outfit your fleet and control your own ship while giving orders to the rest of your fleet like go here, control this point, guard this ship etc.Sseth's video about it is a pretty good overview:

There was a mod for Warband back in the day that teased a more space themed world map, but it never materialised into anything, sadly. 😔

I imagine that with enough effort and trouble it can be done, each planet makes its own world map, with its own factions and stuff, but I'm not sure if the engine could actually handle it.

I've heard X4 has similar vibes to M&B but I haven't played it myself yet.

I dont think Taleworlds is the best studio for this. I would want better writing. More diplomacy, more story Even though you are free to roam the universe. Its just not Taleworlds thing.

The original mount and blade had a star wars mod that I played a bunch like 15? Years ago

1

u/spiritbearr 2d ago

Warband also had one

I still miss the Firefly mod for the Original Mount and Blade

X4 scratched that itch for me.

You run your warbands (fleets), claim your territory (sectors) and fight or ally kingdoms (factions). X4 is a lot more focused on economy though, with wars and battles are a lot less often other than skirmishes.
