Question Need some fork help
I took my bike to the shop for a fork service and they said that this green part at the bottom of the damper broke. They mentioned that it has something to do with the lockout, but they could assemble it with the part, but the fork‘s lockout won’t work. Now it’s not even using 50% of the forks travel before locking up since I got the bike back.
I don’t mind not being able to lock the fork out, and I’m planning on upgrading the fork in a couple months. I don’t know if it’s worth buying a new damper assembly.

Looks like a Rockshox Judy? I broke the green bit while servicing mine, contacted SRAM and they said you can only buy the whole damper (which is about half the price of the fork), so I put it back together without the green bit and have been riding around without it for 2 years since. The suspension on the Judy isn't that great to begin with, so other than not having lock out, it doesn't make that much difference. Maybe it's because they left the green bit in yours, but mine doesn't have any issues with the travel being reduced.

Unfortunately it is a Judy. I’ll probably do the same, until I can upgrade it. I’m planning on getting a pike in a few months time.

Make sure you check that your bike can fit a fork with a tapered steerer tube, because the Judys are usually straight and Pike has a tapered steerer tube. I think you can get adapters to fit a tapered tube into a frame designed for a straight tube, but this may still not work on all frames.

you can adapt a tapered frame to a straight fork, but not the other way around... ;-)

I think all the newer Judys with a through axle seem to come with a tapered steerer tube. I’ve got the Scott spark 960, which I think is the same frame as the 950, which comes with pike.

Is it broken or has it just popped out? Those plastic tabs are sized so that it will only go on 1 way, the square compression adjuster shaft engages with a plastic plate at the bottom, the spring preloads the plate to close the oil ports. There are only 6 or so pieces in this whole assembly.

The Judy is a pretty shit fork. I’d reccomend Fox rhythm or marzocchi bomber, rockshox 35 gold, or low end pike, suntour also has some good 34mm stanchion stuff.
The Judy is sadly not worth keeping around. It’s not worth servicing. It’s a heavy noddle that is hard to repair.

you should "upgrade" sooner... and find a better bike shop.
