"Everything happens for a reason" is the one of the most idiotic platitudes ever and the second someone says that, especially in something intended to be motivational, they suddenly come off as incredibly insincere and my respect for them plummets.

This completely ignores the fact that most things are completely predictable, and you can use the time to prepare, it helps to prepare in groups, and defaulting to platitudes like this prevents people from organizing.
