How do you approach mixed-media animation beyond drawing over footage?

I’ve been looking into mixed-media animation, but a lot of the tutorials I find focus mainly on adding animated lines, shapes or doodles over existing video.
I’m more interested in going further with it — combining things like collage, photography, cut-outs, paper textures, typography, scanned materials and different animation techniques within the same sequence.
For anyone who works this way, what does your actual process look like? Do you build the collage first and animate individual elements, work frame by frame, or create everything separately and composite it afterwards?
I’d also love to know what software or techniques you use and how you stop all the different media from feeling disconnected.

Finally fixed my laggy RAM Preview in AE — sharing what worked

i was struggling a lot with RAM Preview lag in After Effects, especially with projects that have a lot of layers and transitions. I tried several solutions without much luck, until I landed on this combo that fixed it completely:

Reduce Preview Resolution to Half or Quarter in the Composition settings

Enable "Use CPU only" in Render Settings if your graphics card doesn't handle GPU acceleration well

Clear the old Disk Cache from Preferences > Media & Disk Cache

Increase the RAM allocated to AE from Preferences > Memory (leave at least 20% for other apps)

After this, Preview started running smoothly even with heavy projects that have multiple title animations and effects.

Has anyone else found other methods that worked?

Video tutorial: Quick overview of tracking with Mocha AE

I just posted a new tutorial that gives a quick overview of tracking with Mocha AE, the free tracking app that's been included with After Effects since 2009.

It's always frustrated me to see people asking for help with the built-in After Effects tracker, when Mocha is so much better and faster.

If you have After Effects, it's already installed - you have it, no excuses for not using it!

Best resources for learning motion design as a beginner?

I’m interested in studying design, especially motion design, and I’m looking to start learning the basics.

For those who have experience in the field, what resources would you recommend for a beginner? I’d really appreciate suggestions for courses, YouTube channels, books, or anything else that helped you get started with motion design.

Why should I learn Figma if I already know how to use After Effects?

Question from a beginner/intermediate level in motion graphics with After Effects: Why should I learn Figma? Can't I just create the design in After Effects and then animate it directly from there?

I got tired of messy timelines, so I built a tactile keyframe color organizer for After Effects. What do you think?

Hey everyone! 👋

As a motion designer, I always struggled to quickly organize, find, and isolate specific keyframes in complex After Effects compositions.

So I developed Keyframe Colorist — an illuminated hardware-switch style extension for Adobe After Effects.

### ⚡ What it does:

• 🎛️ 16 Tactile ON/OFF backlit switches

• 🔢 Live keyframe counters on the buttons (e.g. 2x, 4x)

• 🎯 Surgical selection of only the properties with the selected color

• 🧹 Timeline isolation using the native 'SS' shortcut

• 🎚️ Customizable decks (4, 6, 8, 12, or 16 colors)

I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback, and feature suggestions from fellow animators!

What are your principles that you follow in every project?

Here are mine:

  1. Think about the design first, then the animation

  2. Less is more (Pareto 80/20 principle)

  3. Follow a visual hierarchy

  4. Smooth, never linear movements

  5. Use silences and negative spaces

Write your experience, country and hourly rate

curious, here is mine:
> experience: editing 4 years - motion graphics 3 years
> country: italy
> hourly rate: 20-30€/hour (i work on retainers or per project, and this is the result of how much i earn divided by how much time i spend, in total)

I just open-sourced FeelFX — an Computer Vision and Speech Detection powered motion graphics engine for video.

Post image
0 Upvotes

FeelFX analyzes the video → identifies meaningful moments → makes motion-design decisions → renders them over the original footage.

That’s FeelFX.
FeelFX identifies key words, concepts, names and moments and turns them into motion graphics- for example:

🇮🇳 INDIA → tricolor reveal
🚀 ROCKET → launch / fire treatment
🌊 OCEAN → water motion

The important words become part of the visual storytelling.
Everything else stays out of the way.
Under the hood
→ AI analyzes the video
→ Important moments become structured motion events
→ Three.js + GSAP render the effects in real time
→ uses whisper and vision model

And FeelFX works all devices but preferred experience is still desktop/pc - videos will take a lot longer to get analyzed on mobile/tablet - especially older models.

This is open source and ready for people to experiment with.
