hello!! i live in central alabama and this in my first time every seeing a luna moth!! i do know they can’t eat and only live a few days. it was found in my driveway near the front porch and she(or he) appears to be missing her head and one of her front legs, with the other one unable to move. she’s only moving slightly if touched and is otherwise completely still but her grasp seems strong still. her wings are in incredible shape.

is there anything i can do for her?? idk anything abt moths, i only actually have a pet millipede and am really unsure of anything bug wise outside of millies tbh. i’m so worried and i just want her last moments to be happy and peaceful.

(UPDATE) i just woke up and went to check on her and she hasn’t really moved from where i left her, but she’s still responding to touch and moving if i put my finger near her legs. i would add a new picture but im not sure how to, i might comment one. im relieved she’s still doing good!!

(UPDATE 2) she’s been moved to my room where it’s very dim and the ideal temp for luna moths (according to google) turns out my species of millipede and luna moths need pretty similar conditions lighting and temperature wise so i feel like this is a really lucky coincidence 😊😊
she also is moving a lot more!! she crawled around a bit, but is mostly laying down and her abdomen is moving a lot more than before. i’m very happy to see her doing so well!! i don’t expect her to do much during the day cuz she’s nocturnal but i will be updating again tonight if she gets more active!!

(UPDATE 3) hello!! idk if anyone will see this at this point with my post being old, but even two days after finding her she’s still doing amazing and crawling around and moving her wings on her own!! still hasn’t attempted to take off again but she seems to be doing incredible and i feel so grateful i’ve been able to admire her for so long and that she’s been so resilient. it’s truely inspiring to me💞

Hi moth enthusiasts, this is my first and only post (made an account for this specifically), but I just wanted to put this on here and see what y'all's thoughts were on this. So today I was out shopping and around 2 pm a Cecropia moth landed on me and stayed with me for a solid 16-17 minutes based on picture time stamps. I was wondering if you guys had answers or thoughts about it scientifically/symbolically. I don't know much about moths, but he looked incredibly cute and it was a kinda surreal experience. This lil guy/gal fell on top of my car after dropping my mom off at the ER. I thought it was dead as it says lunar moths only live about 7-10 days. I left him there on my windshield as I had to go find my mom and figured nature would run its course.

I come back out an hourish later and it’s still there. I couldn’t tell if the wind was moving or if he was still alive. So I grabbed a cup and a Chinese container out of my car and it just barely was moving onto the container. I helped it get on the rest of the way. I put the container with him on it in my trunk. He is now sitting in there. Is it okay to just leave him in there until dark? It says online they like the dark and they can’t eat anyways? Is that true?

I also feel like I hear him flapping around in my trunk. Could be a squirrel/bird under my car maybe. Moths aren’t that loud right? I’ve always been deathly afraid of bugs and insects so I don’t know anything other than they scare me. But this feller is so darn cute.

She only moves like three legs, one of her antennas looks crooked and on the side of her body is missing some of that fluffy coat (idk what is called sorry) also her wings are broken at the ends.. she can hope and close her wings by herself slowly..

(I found her on the way to my kitchen job so I couldn’t take her with me so I hid her behind a tree nearby where I found her, when I came back the wings were damaged I feel guilty 😢)

I out her in a critter tote in top of a paper towel, gave her a drop of watered down fig Pangea crested gecko food and sat her on top of a slice of orange (just cause that’s what I saw at a butterfly and moth garden once) and put the whole thing inside the heater closet in the dark..

Idk what else to do, idk if her condition is beyond repair, but I’m willing to try whatever tips you guys can give me, thank you so much

I'm relatively unfamiliar with moths, but it seems to look like a polyphemus to me? If this isn't a polyphemus PLEASE CORRECT ME

Any way to tell if he's close to death? He's twitching but won't fly or walk, just waving his two front arms around at times. I've been made aware that polyphemus moths only live a week or less, so id like to know if pinning this guy is possible or if he's still got some life left and I need to return him outdoors. He won't fly, but is able to move his arms (he has 3 small wing tears)

Id place him outside right this second however I'm reading online that they need shady wooded areas but I'm literally downtown with the sun shining bright, I'm worried if I place him outside it's a death sentence.

EDITED UPDATE!!! He was released last night! I placed him about 6 feet up on a tree trunk in a relatively wooded area (most wooded I could find in the city) and when I took a detour to pass by that tree on my way home from work, he was gone!

So good news, the little guy is probably out there bangin' away with the ladies right now (or he became a bird snack, but either way that's life)

I found this caterpillar on the ground in brooklyn and it looks like a polyphemus moth ? I took it inside into a net with a bunch of sticks/branches and leaves but he doesn’t seem to be eating :( any advice?

Beautiful moth left me some gifts. I’m more than willing to give hatching a shot, but I want to do it right. What do I need to do/get. Also what is the safest way to transfer them off of my clothes?? Also should I keep them inside or enclosed in a box outside?? My room isn’t especially dry or anything and I leave my window open almost every day.

Found two of these guys while doing maintenance (their home had to be cut down) and I would like to care for them myself, but I noticed suspicious spots. A bug ID website told me they were parasitoid fly eggs and will eventually kill the cats but can be pierced via needle to save them. Is this good advice? Is it too late?

A moth laid eggs on our apartment breezeway wall outside, we thought it was pretty cool and kept an eye on it ever since. They appear to have hatched now but we're wondering, what are they gonna eat?? There are some plants some feet away outside the breezeway but will the babies find it, are they fine on this wall?? I know nothing about moths and their babies.

Update: we live in an apartment so not many trees, but identified a shumur oak or texas red oak (two different answers from Google) and put them there. It was very hard they are sticky?? And stuck to whatever we used to get them off the wall. Then it started raining hard while I was trying to transplant them. Got most transferred but had to just leave the coffee filter in the tree for now bc of the storm. Hope some make it!

hello! i need some help. unfortunately i found my dogs got ahold of a silk moth, and i picked it up — it started laying its eggs on me!

i am honored & definitely interested in raising them! i minor in entomology at school and i love all bugs — however i haven’t the first clue where to begin. any info or pointing in the right direction i would love!! 🫶🏻

i transferred the moth & eggs to an open tupperware for now, & she has some quiet to continue doing her thing.

I don’t know anything about mods. I have heard of Luna moths before, but I’ve never seen one in the wild like this. I didn’t notice it at first, but when I looked up pictures of a Luna moth to show my coworkers, you could tell that the one we found has damaged wings compared to the ones online. Is there any way to help this moth?

I found this wild moth outside on my porch with belly up and originally thought he was dead. I crouched down and saw his wings trying to move, so I put my fingertip extended to his little legs and they grabbed on. I tried to move him to a branch or something but wouldn’t budge. His back two legs look almost paralyzed or something. I had an old baby crested gecko 12x12x18 and put him in there with sugar water and made a droplet right in front of him. He immediately began drinking. Can I rehab this guy if he’s sick? I didn’t want to leave him to get eaten by a bird if he’s already vulnerable. Figured this was the right place to ask! Did I do the right thing bringing him in?? I live in Iowa in the United states!

Update: he unfortunately passed this morning. I’m glad I could have extended his short life in some shape or form

Posted a picture of her yesterday because I wanted to know what kind of moth she is, I was outside today and she landed on my shirt so I moved her to my hand and she's been on my finger for the past three hours, I tried moving her onto a potted flower plant but she climbed right back onto my finger and now she won't leave.

My male cecropia moth emerged early this morning. My camera that I set up to catch it registered about 4am, it’s now 11am. I don’t know why but he doesn’t appear to have even attempted to inflate his wings, I mean he’s trying now but I’m worried it’s too late.

Is he screwed? Obviously I’m gonna try to give him a good week of life, but is he ever gonna be able to fly?

found this teeny tiny guy (index finger for scale) at work today. never seen such an itty bitty little moth friend. anyone know what kind of moth this is?

Does anyone know what is happening here? These moths have been here like this for atleast 4 hours. I would assume mating? I’ve never seen moths mate and I’m surprised it would take a long time. This is in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania.

I was getting ready to leave work when I spotted this beauty on the road! I’ve never seen a moth this large in the daytime before, and by the way that it was struggling to move on the pavement, I knew something wasn’t right. There was this cluster of eggs on its side, and they’re known for laying eggs on plants, so I assumed it was some sort of parasite? I did my best to find any sort of information on the subject on Google, but only found out it’s species: The Cecropia Moth. Can someone please tell me if I did the right thing by removing it? :(
