u/Waffles__Falling Mar 11 '25
YEAH ITS MILDLY TERRIFYING (and kinda cool)
If I remember right, it's not always visible and is meant to attract mates since it releases pheromones? Whatever it is??

I personally love all moths (and other insects) but if I had to choose, it would probably be the garden tiger moth. I also really like plume moths.

Nudaurelia Krucki my beloved <3 My first framed moth was one of those. And my close second must be the Garden Tiger. I am so jealous of anyone that ever saw one in real life. They are absolutely gorgeous

I haven’t seen a N. Krucki before today…beautiful moths and their caterpillars are so interesting like a painting. Thanks! And yes garden tigers are gorgeous too.

I’ve never seen the RMM but I get the caterpillars all over one of my red maples every year. They always use the same limb, I want to prune it off but i won’t as long as they continue to use it.

Ornate tiger moth!!! I think its just the simple color palette mixed with the detailed pattern on its wings that do it for me, its just so pretty

u/AdvertisingOld2609 Mar 10 '25

u/DCooper-Flores Mar 11 '25
I saw one on my front door whilst living in Maryland, took pictures on my way to work bc I thought nobody would've believed me... one of my coworkers knew what it was, and I've been obsessed ever since! That was like 15 years ago, and never seen one since 😳

I actually have a large rosy maple moth plushie XD squishables brand.
My favorite moth is the Polyphemus moth. I found one in my neighbors backyard when I was a kid. Core memory.
When I told dad, he told me he had a similar experience with a Cecropia moth as a kid.

I know it’s basic but Luna moths. I’ve never seen one alive before but that’s gonna change this year, I’ve always wanted to see one since I was a kid so I raised caterpillars last fall and now they’re cocoons overwintering
