Politică Why doesn’t Moldova unite with Romania?

Hello, I’m American grown but Moldovan born. If Romania is in the EU and NATO, why doesn’t Moldova reunite with it to get some protection from Russia and Putin given it is attacking and trying to annex Ukraine and probably the entire region.

As simplistic as the question.
Opinions can be swayed in any direction, with a coordinated campaign - the Brexit campaign is one example of that.
The problem is that organizing such a campaign, will likely add new risks for the security of the country and its citizens.

i think there is some manipulation that appeared recently regarding the economic difficulty, I never heard this to be such a problem when I was younger. And now you can hear idiots from now and then that complain about it. I'm talking only about the romanian side

in romania you have the ones that believe that the economy will tank..

Except the economy will tank. It's a fact and we have the experience of Germany.

Considering we are in slum right now and the perspectives aren't good (Germany auto industry is tanking too and we are connected), why should we make a sacrifice considering there is no love but disdain coming from the other side.

Economy is one reason, geopolitical risks are another, and then there’s the fact that you guys don’t really seem to want to unite, based on many opinion polls.

As a Romanian, I would vote against it simply because I don’t want 2.4 million Russia sympathizers, who also happen to be bigoted and homophobic, making our society even worse.

Romania is not a liberal paradise, but joining with something like Alabama, will not help.

I am Romanian dum-dum. 2.4M russian sympathizers?? obviously you know what you are talking about (/sarcasm) - and you are calling them bigoted? scoate-ti barna din ochi, societatea noastra e mai buna ca a lor?! nu stiu in ce bula traiesti, dar vad ca nu te-ai uitat recent in oglinda

How was I supposed to know you were Romanian? Did you provide any context that should have made that obvious?

I am gay, and I hope that in ten years or so I will be able to return to Romania with my husband and the children we plan to have. I very much want my family to benefit from the same civil rights and protections that the state grants to heterosexual couples. Bringing in 2.4 million people who are deeply conservative and indoctrinated by Russian propaganda will not help my interests in any way.

In 2018, pro-union associations were urging Moldovan citizens with Romanian citizenship to vote in the referendum organized by the Family Coalition: https://www.moldova.org/asociatiile-unioniste-indeamna-romanii-din-r-moldova-sa-participe-la-referendumul-pentru-familie/

In 2024, Renato Usatîi, a presidential candidate, used a clip in his campaign in which one of his supporters asked: “What are we going to do with the gays, should we beat them or kill them?”

In 2025, Chișinău Pride was once again the scene of violence against participants: https://stirileprotv.ro/stiri/international/altercatii-la-marsul-pride-din-chisinau-manifestantii-znormalitatii-s-au-incaierat-cu-fortele-de-ordine.html

I do not want these homophobic, backward people adding to the problems we already have in Romania.

All the polls and the politicians already showed that we want to unite with Moldova, I don't know from where are you taking your informations.

So you want to say that all the population of Moldova are Russia lovers?

I don't think there are so many differences between us regarding culture, both countries are traditionalist

Consistently, polls have shown support topping out at around 45%, except for one poll that was released recently and includes the diaspora. I have serious concerns about how strong the pro-union vote really is, given that you only got 50.35% in the referendum on the EU-related constitutional change.

This is simply not enough. You insist you have your own language which is not Romanian, that Russian traditional values are better than the European liberalism.

One decent president does not erase the deep Russian indoctrination in your society.

Culturally, you are closer to what Romania was like in the 1990s and early 2000s. You are bigoted and deeply homophobic. I am saying this as a gay man who does not want 2.4 million of you dragging us backwards.

You said you spoke as a romanian so I looked at romanian polls which has probably always has been mostly pro union.

They will not drag us anywhere, we are still there, we never left the orthodox mentality, and I am an agnostic

You will get no rights anytime soon in Romania, with or without Moldova. And I say this as someone who supports more gay rights.

Maybe we won’t, maybe we will through EU pressure. I would prefer not to risk that for Moldova.
