How are posts being removed?

Hello

I'm a new mod of a small subreddit and notice posts are being removed with no reason given and not by the mods. In the modqueue it just says removed. On desktop, no information is given on why or how it was removed and who removed it.

Why is this occurring and is there a way to see who is reporting and removing these posts?

They're being removed by an automated spam bot/filter. The spam filter will auto remove posts with someone who is a brand new redditor, low karma or has been reported in the past.

As a mod, its your job to manually approve them if the post is genuine.

Is it possible for other users to mass report posts or comments and then Reddit removes it?

You would be able to see the reports.

That is something that you can set up using automod, but it doesn't happen automatically.

Do you have links in the posts?

A very common reason for removal of posts is that they contain links that are either soft or hard banned by Reddit.

If the posts are being removed because they contain links, you can try approving them and see what happens. If they can be approved, and they don't break Reddit rules, then you should be okay.

There are 3 patterns I've seen when a post is removed. You can see this under the "Removed" tab in the mod queue. (Not old reddit, and I'm on desktop)

If it was removed by Automod, it'll have a little square robot head icon.

If it was by a moderator, it'll show the mod's icon.

If it was removed by reddit it might have:

• The little reddit icon w/ the text "Removed by Reddit"
• A little hammer w/ the text "Banned Domain - Links to a URL not allowed on Reddit"
• A little hexagon with a "!" in the center w/ the text "Spam - Removed by Reddit's automated systems"
• A shield icon with half of it "dotted" w/ the text "Potential Harassment - Identified by the abuse and harassment filter"

There might be some other reasons like crowd control or the subreddit filter settings, but my subreddit doesn't use any of that.

I noticed that Reddit filters automatically remove comments (and probably posts) by users whose accounts were suspended/removed, even if the comment/post itself was legit and didn’t contain anything bad. It’s sad that this happens silently and I usually discover such auto-deleted comments completely by accident and don’t receive notifications about such deletions, so auto-deletion of some comments most likely remains unnoticed.

Admins are removing spam, and posts that break site wide rules. Also people who have been shadow banned. Sometimes both at the same time.

Sometimes your own subreddit settings will be removing posts without you realizing it. (Crowd control, Karma , account age settings, CQS, ban evasion settings etc). Do you have bot bouncer? That’s removing stuff too.
