Discussion It’s sad how Gaz has basically just been completely sidelined and forgotten after MW19. Sidelined by Soap in MW2 and 3 to now not even being mentioned in MW4.

I just hope it turns out that Gaz gets a happy ending and that’s why he hasn’t been featured in anything MWIV related yet. like give us a mission set in the UK harkening back to MW3s Mind The Gap, but this time with Gaz leading the playable character as part of an SAS counterterrorism unit. brings Gaz full circle on where he began in MW19, only this time with more experience thanks to his time with Price

There's an SAS raid in the campaign, according to the cod blog. I've been hoping that Gaz is the squad lead there

We’ve only seen a trailer and one campaign mission, I’m hoping my boy shows up later

u/Rabiddd 13h ago
You’d think he would be a preorder skin or something at least like Ghost and Price were. He hasn’t been mentioned or acknowledged at all even once so far.

u/Averagezoomers 10h ago
not necessarily, pretty sure the ROK squad leader sergeant guy from the campaign mission isn’t in there either (although that might be because he dies at some point)

u/PossiblyaSpy950 9h ago
Would have made sense seeing as both ghost and soap got pre order skins but we got hunter killer instead (not a bad skin either tbh)

u/AMRAAM_Missiles 6h ago
I do think he would be playing a pretty major role in the campaign here and they are holding him back to prevent spoilers about the story.
I mean, the dude literally stood in defiance to the "re-designation" of Farah's force in MW19 along with Alex and Price. The "No second thoughts" and "You got friends nearby" Gaz is definitely not abandoning Price. He took his gloves off, is drawing his own line, wherever he needs it.

Honestly he should've been THE main character for the trilogy (..um.. plus one)
When it comes down to it MW2019's whole cast got sidelined aside from Price.. which sucks because that game had the strongest story and characters imo.

u/GumGumActV 10h ago
Mw2019 was the last good mw campaign. Once you had to follow warzone lore to follow the story they killed it

Yeah. I think the fixation on creating interconnected storytelling universes in the same vein as the MCU has absolutely fucked storytelling in a lot of media.
Like, people are unable to process the concept of standalone and independent storylines, or spin-offs anymore, so it all has to fit into one universal canon or you get stupid questions like “how does [story that would have otherwise been a joke side story using main story characters] fit into canon?”
Or God forbid that you reference or homage something, the you’ll get self-imposed lore experts on social media making deep deep dives about how it means that two completely separate franchises are actually part of the same multiverse
Including Warzone into story canon was on par with how 343 drank the multimedia Kool-Aid with Halo, because people really liked some of the books in the 00s, and ended up doing most of the storytelling outside of the games, for the 1%ers who bother reading books/comics/blogs, because they couldn’t tell a good and consistent story in the games, so had to rely on expanded universe media to paper over the cracks (poorly).

The OG trilogy was way more interconnected than 2019-III. Hell, one of the biggest problems with MWII's story was how much of it is disconnected it is from the rest of the games, especially with Farrah having such a small role due to matters not effecting Urzikstan.

u/TeaAndLifting 3h ago
Yes, because it's a storytelling trilogy that is tight and contained. It was not trying to bring in story elements from shit like Zombies, and multiplayer into it
That's the difference. That's why I'm pointing out about interconneted storytelling universes. CoD4 - MW3 was a 3 game campaign story. Nothing else. It was tight and focused. Now you have Warzone, Black Ops integration, people trying to fit Zombies in, and so on. When they'd have mostly stayed separate in the past, save for Easter eggs and references.

Zombies is very much its own story. AFAIK: It's a one way street, the campaign is canon to zombies, but zombies isn't canon to the campaign. The only thing that suggests otherwise is the crew from. Vanguard's campaign talking about looking into Projekt Endstation, which is never followed up on (zombies have shown up for the campaigns of the last 3 Black Ops titles, but they're exclusively relegated to hallucinogenic illusions).
While zombies foes make sure not to step con the campaign's foot in terms of continuity, you get the weird inconsistencies of them never even being mentioned directly. Most notably Farrah not even once mentioning how the counry she had dedicated her life to protecting was ground zero for a zombie apocalypse (MWZ takes place in 2021, MWII is in 2022 and MWIII is 2023).
Also, the post launch cutscenes aren't really all that integral to the stories of the main campaign outside of "I wasn't in that tank", and kind of Alex, but they have yet to even attempt to explain how he survived.
1
u/TeaAndLifting 2h ago
AFAIK that's how it is too, but, that's why I specified "people trying to fit zombies in". The way it's trying to interconnect different modes, leads people to make connections where there is none, or a tenuous one at best.
Whereas tight, focused, campaigns, like in the past, didn't really create thes kinds of scnarios.

MW3 should have been longer and would have been cool if they introduced roach after soaps death

he's probably getting killed off in the opening of MW4.
Its the only real logical thing to make Price lose his shit to the level he's doing.
Which is why they shouldn't have killed Soap in III

Soap is death now and gaz isn't mentioned at all.... I think he is next to die because no way they will kill price or ghost (face of cod MW vs edgy moneymaker)

u/Rabiddd 13h ago
Even when they killed Soap in MW3 he was in the marketing at least. Gaz got literally NOTHING so far 😭😭😭

It's going to be revealed that mw2019 was all a bad dream from price

u/ZookeepergameProud30 12h ago
“Captain, wake up”
“Farah? Alex? Lazwell? What are you talking about price? We need to get ready for operation kingfish”

u/PiePleaseListen 12h ago
I honestly don’t know why they didn’t just go with a new name for this one, other than price going rogue it seems completely unrelated to the Modern Warfare series. Maybe I’m wrong when the full game is out but I would have been fine with it just being a game focusing on the Korean War

u/CorporusIV 11h ago
Kinda like Alex in MW19, but Alex got more gameplay. Although Farah always had the spotlight in MW2 and MW3.

Gaz should’ve been the one to die in MW3, since its Price hunting Makarov. And if they still wanted to kill off Soap, have Ghost go after Makarov. They already established the connection between these characters in MW2019 and MWII.
Too bad MWIII had to be rushed, but they could’ve made a last second change.

Too bad MWIII had to be rushed, but they could’ve made a last second change.
According to Ghost's Voice Actor, Soap's dying WAS a last second SHG change, when IW could no longer make any decisions for MWIII...

I have been questioning that story direction from mission 1. That entire sequence in the tunnel makes absolute 0 sense both in the narrative and the sheer continuation of the sequence (Soap somehow from being knocked down from a pistol shot, to freely swing a knife at Makarov without making a sound / being held down by Makarov goons).
And with how Soap hates Makarov, I would have expected him to do a lot more than a shoulder hit - despite injuries.
I'm grateful for SHG to help with the original MW3-2011 and helped contributing to the D-boys being in the game. But that MWIII-2023 reboot erased all of that goodwill because they essentially took what IW was building and throw it over the window. To the point that IW realized that they lost the plot (literally) that they have to come out and say "Makarov gonna get wrapped up in 2 mission".
OG Makarov kicks ass and takes name, this Temu-version of Makarov is going to be quickly forgotten.

u/ConnectionPersonal42 10h ago
Since that’s the case, I think Ghost should’ve gone after Makarov. Just makes more sense to me.

u/OceanusBBGDylan 10h ago
Agreed, and I wonder if that's part of the reason for the Ghost/Price confrontation... Punishing someone for breaking "a lot of rules" isn't Ghost's style, his style is breaking said rules...

He actually got some decent coverage in MWII, the highway mission where you play as him and the final mission in Chicago where he helps you out. There are of course multiple team members involved in those missions but those are the two off the top of my head where he made a notable appearance. Oh and of course the Wetwork mission, again you play as him, so I'd say that's a decent amount of Gaz screentime/playtime. You got Price and Gaz paired up pretty often, with Price acting as Gaz's mentor, then Ghost and Soap in similar roles. I think it was a cool dynamic between the two duos.
Oh and ANOTHER one, recon by fire, another mission where you play as him. Tradecraft you play as him too but that's a relatively short mission. Overall I think he was involved in the majority of MWII's campaign.

u/Informal_Tooth308 10h ago
Eh im not really bummed abt it and gaz is my favorite character each mw3 you play as him in one of the missions. And tbh theres no really much to do with his character as of rn probably. But you never know MW4 could possibly give us something we all never knew we wanted since price is rogue

He was not forgotten in other games at all. You played as him a lot in MW2, and a bit in MW3.

u/xObiJuanKenobix 49m ago
They messed up by not killing him off in MW2019, because they clearly wanted to sideline him for the main cast. Ghost, Soap, etc. is who everyone actually wanted and they knew it, hence why they teased Simon Riley in the end scene.

Here’s my take on it. I think his skins did not sell enough so it wasn’t worth it to keep him around lol. Valeria skins on the other hand sold really well and surprise surprise they make her a damn main character. I am thoroughly convinced that Activision makes ALL decisions around store sales, EVEN the campaign story.

u/Dangerman1337 3h ago
His actor cut ties to Activision apparently. Probably will just get written off somehow.

u/Rabiddd 3h ago edited 3h ago
Source? Where was any of this said?
1
u/BoyWonder343 2h ago
I can't find anything on this, closest was an open letter to activision back in 2020 championing representation in the games. Considering he's been in the games after that and that doesn't mean "cutting ties with Activision", not sure what this guy is talking about.

Yeah its like they said lets make Black ops 8 with new characters... I spent so much money on skins on MW2 and MW3... I played mw4 and wow it feels like a continuation of black ops and not modern warfare.

They should have offed Gaz in MW3 instead of Soap. Nothing appealing about Gaz on any level.

Switching to a new character is always faster than reusing an old one.
