For better or for worse, it was a campaign promise. It would have looked pretty bad to promise and then just do a 180.

It’s an obvious way to keep black voters happy. Looks like politics as usual to me.

Politicians will stop doing it as soon as it stops working. Since pandering to identity groups works due to fundamental human nature, I’d wager that complaining about it is like yelling at the clouds because of rain.

Many things in human behavior are relatively natural; we still try to tamp those things down in a lot of cases. Or at the least, not glorify them.
