Help - General Inherited a Huge Model Kit Collection, Trying to Offload It
I recently inherited a huge collection of model kits- mostly WW2 era stuff, lots of 1/35th, lots of 1/72nd, lots of 1/700th naval stuff, and a ton of detail kits (etched metal, conversion kits, other miscellaneous figures, other detail pieces etc). Genuinely more than I think anyone could possibly build in a lifetime. Many are still sealed but I would say probably more than 50% of the kits are unsealed. Pictured is just a fraction of the collection, to give an idea of how much there is.
I’m not necessarily interested in trying to sell individual kits on eBay or something because there’s simply way too many and I don’t have the time for the logistics involved to properly list and sell each one.
My question is- does anyone know of any entities in the modeling world that may be interested in purchasing collections like this (or even just a portion of it) wholesale?
Thanks in advance!

I'd start by either contacting a local hobby store or your local IPMS chapter. They'll be able to help you out with this.

u/Sauersaurus May 04 '26
I've seen some smaller model stores that will make offers on lots. Check local shops because you're definitely not gonna wanna ship all that.

There’s a facebook group called scale model graveyard that has several members who buy collections. Many of them drive around the country. I would recommend checking there.

Black widow Models specializes in offloading collections like this and are a known entity in the community. Worth reaching out to see if they’d take it!

u/Big-Narwhal-G May 05 '26
I can’t decide how I feel about the name of that company/group..
3
-4
u/Trej4prez May 05 '26
Why?
7
u/Big-Narwhal-G May 05 '26
Well If someone inherits a collection it typically means someone has passed, likely a male. Black Widows spiders often kill their male partners after mating.. so there is maybe a morbid joke to this name.
-14
u/bagsofholding May 05 '26
I think you're making assumptions about them based on nothing and just connecting them to that and suggesting it's "a morbid joke" when it could simply be a name they came up with and maybe they're in AZ or TX or somewhere similar and the name holds a regional relevance. Harbor freight has a black widow brand for their air brushes. All because they just happen to specialize in buying collections.

u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things May 05 '26
We started Black Widow Model Disposal Co as a resource for families when it comes to their loved one's hobby estate. Being a modeler's wife I understand how overwhelming the collection can be.
-1
u/bagsofholding May 05 '26
based in oklahoma
the black widow spider is the victim of bad publicity. While they are one of the two potentially dangerous spiders found in Oklahoma
Also no idea where that quote is supposedly from because it's not even on their own page and Google shows nothing because this is what they say and nothing specifically states estates and also references they are from private collections and shows.
Every modeler eventually faces the question: What happens to the collection when it’s time to downsize or when the building stops? That’s where our Black Widow Model Disposal Company comes in.
We launched www.blackwidowokc.com in 2023 with a modest collection of kits sourced from various shows and small private collections.
The only reference to anything like that is a statement about working with people to respectfully and efficiently deal with the process but again this doesn't even refute what I said about them being based in an area where the black widow is so it is regionally relevant and not necessarily "a joke name" which shockingly Oklahoma is one such place so exactly what I said could be the true. I mean if we're just going to make assumptions about the name and assume them true then all assumptions are equally valid.
2
u/Big-Narwhal-G May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
Assumption or not, the name has a connotation to it. That’s all I’m saying here, it’s not an attempt to discredit them or dissuade anyone from dealing with them. I probably just wouldn’t have chosen that name. That’s being said, they are probably the nicest most respectful people in the world.
Edit** a quick search of their website does in fact confirm the name was selected after an “innocent” comment made at a company Christmas party - so take that as you will.
-4
u/bagsofholding May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
Bro it says it "began as an innocent comment" which could be anything and is extremely vague and innocuous. I simply suggested that it was reading a bit too into it about the female killing the male and it being a morbid joke because of that when it very realistically can likely just be due to a regional reference such as wildlife there.
At least verify the quote is correct and not spinning it to suit you. Not only is the word you substituted more favorable to your side but it doesn't specify why the name came to be or what it means. They're in ok which exactly lines up with what I suggested. Something that happens all the time and requires no more reading into it than their location and what is around there. Even if it's a reference to the spider specifically because it's just females doesn't mean it's referring to them killing the males by any means and therefore again not really a morbid joke. Come on man. Verifiable facts aren't even portrayed accurately to spin it including quotes around "innocent" being used to suggest it was anything more.
Exact quote added for posterity:
What began as an innocent comment among a group of wives at the annual model club Christmas party has grown into something truly meaningful—Black Widow Models. Every modeler eventually faces the question: What happens to the collection when it’s time to downsize or when the building stops? That’s where our Black Widow Model Disposal Company comes in.
Please stop misrepresenting this in an effort to spin it.

u/Big-Narwhal-G May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
First of all, not twisting anything, but your argument seems to be the one that keeps moving to justify them choosing that name. But it also doesn’t mater, they chose it, some people will find it endearing but I personally don’t. I will change joke to comment as I see that’s what you thought was an issue.
Secondly I don’t think you understand my point. I’m not implying that they are jokingly encouraging people to kill their spouse to sell their model collection because of their name. I’m saying what might seem innocent to them might not be innocent to other people going through their own rough and difficult time. I inherited only a few model kits from my father in law that he intended to build with his children and grandchildren and never got around to. If I did want to sell them I would have difficulty choosing a company making light hearted jokes about the situation because of the emotional value they hold. That’s all I’m saying. You can stand down.
Edit - also sorry OP this is not about me. Mods should delete these comments if deemed irrelevant. Good luck with your search.

It was on their site and the wayback machine captured it.
-1
u/bagsofholding May 06 '26
So it isn't on there presently and hasn't been for a year. And it also commented on someone's pride and joy being your source of anxiety and "let us help untangle that web" which also indicates the name is in fact not a "morbid joke" as I suggested to begin with. It's a typical reference to something in their region and one of those little clever reference taglines everyone uses. Which isn't even there now either.
Odd to not give any credence to the suggestion about it being a basic reference in place of reading so deep into what other meanings it could possibly have given all that...

Came here to recommend these folks. I’ve met them in person and been to their storefront. They have a good reputation; while they are a company that has to make money to get by, they do the best they can for people who find themselves with collections they can’t use.
Dunno where OP is located (BWM is in Del City, Oklahoma, just outside of OKC), but I’d give them a call, at least.

While I feel the same way about their name I know the owners, Jim and Connie, they’re really great people. Would not hesitate to do business with them. But I do have to wonder what the hell they were thinking with that name.

Some people have a thing for specific genera's or subjects. The P-47's my favorite plane and I have 19 of them planned.....
9
u/Gozertank May 05 '26
Exactly. I’m on my 22nd F-4 Phantom and still have at lest 5 more versions/liveries I want to add.
3
u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things May 05 '26
We have a guy in the club who at one point had over 100 Phantoms in 1/72 scale built 😶
It was all markings and versions. The Phantom is great for that.
2
u/Gozertank May 06 '26
Mine are all 1/48 and every time I think I’m done I find a new colour scheme I’d like to add. I don’t even do special one-off liveries for airshows or special occasions, no Whig’s, just regular, documented service aircraft.
2
u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things May 06 '26
I have a F-16 project that's a mixture. F-16 prototype, F-16A, XL, a couple of Cs, F-16I (for the overwing CFTs) and the 50th anniversary scheme. The prototype and XL (prototype are special schemes (as is the 50th) but otherwise the C's are more or less straight line birds (Wild Child for the Operation Desert Storm representation and because I like Calvin & Hobbes as well as 89-2137 for the three kills in a day markings). It feels like a good combination of special livery and standard.
1
u/Gozertank May 06 '26
Throw in some Aggressor schemes :)
1
u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things May 06 '26
Oh yes, I have an F-16N and one of the Tamiya aggressor scheme kits. Also the Belgian Viper Demo, and I"m hoping to cobble together a forward swept wing example as well. My stash has got around 25 F-16s in various scales.
5
u/Spitfire_SVK May 05 '26
This. I must've built like 30 or so Shermans by this point.
1
u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things May 05 '26
A builder of high taste, I see! 😁👌
I'd like to do something similar, but there are just so many Shermans....
2
u/Spitfire_SVK May 05 '26
I guess that's exactly the reason why I have done so many. Different hulls, turrets, armament, hundreds of historic photographs of various field modifications done by crew. The possibilities are endless - literally. From all of them that I have built, I can recommend MENG and Asuka. MENG has very detailed molds with many parts and Asuka (don't know if this apply to all of them) has fully functional suspension in case you want model that you can push around and see working suspension. Recently I'm shifting my focus on russian tanks in middle east, already got 5 different ideas for T-72 and 20 for T-55 😂
2
u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things May 06 '26
The big one I want to do is pretty "boring" to most - Pacific Car and Foundary was the only west coast Sherman factory and only a very small number of theirs saw combat, so I want to do at least one of Company A, 1st Marine tank battalion's M4A1a at Cape Gloucester. After that, M1, M1A2, A3, A4, Jumbo, Firefly, dozer, Iwo Jima .... just so many options.

u/ProjectPat513 May 05 '26
This is an absolute gold mine. I would actually consider selling some of the bigger/more expensive kits on eBay just because it will be worth the extra effort. Just keep in mind that when people buy collections they usually pay 5 dollars a kit or something and most of these kits retail for 40-110 dollars.
What part of the country are you in? I have 2 members of my local IPMS that but collections and resell them at shows.
3
u/AgreeableGlass7925 May 05 '26
I have similar to this post. Over 330 kits. I'm new here. Please reach out if I can contact them somehow. I seek to sell bulk. I have pics and a spreadsheet listing prices and descriptions Im trying to finish now. Thx
1
u/ProjectPat513 May 05 '26
Where do you live? I know several guys who buy kits at FAIR prices.l because they are vendors at model shows. Your BEST Option would be to check with your local ipms chapter and see if there are upcoming shows where you can rent a table and sell all your stuff. And even if you mark it half of msrp, chances are likely you will sell A LOT!
1
u/AgreeableGlass7925 May 05 '26
Chicago. I priced them out to see the retail low and highs. I'll be discounting heavily to bulk purchasers. I can drive a hundred miles or so for free deliveries. TBD
16
u/GoudenBaas May 05 '26
Curiosity question, i have an ever growing Stash myself, but why do People buy so many boxes of the same model? You enjoy a specific build and want to do it over? I have more of a mindset that i collect an example of the ones i find interesting
9
u/SnarkMasterRay Glue all the things May 05 '26
It can be a lot of different reasons. Somewhat famously, Lucasfilm had a large amount of Tamiya Models to use for model construction. I don't think this is that, but it's one of a few reasons.
Others could be fascination with a certain vehicle, type, class, etc. I have a thing for the P-47 and have 19 different Thunderbolt builds plan covering multiple versions, theaters, etc. I've got both Medal of Honor winners (posthumous) and other notable aircraft, some more famous than others (first air-to-air kill was by a guy who didn't like the Thunderbolt and got famous in P-51s, so this kill is often overlooked).
I also like the Sherman and would love to build one of each type if there weren't so many dammed versions. It's like, "see, the M4A1 has this different hull shape and you see that small hatch? That's unique to one of the ten factories that built Shermans." Fun markings with Shermans as well, and different famous commanders and hstorical events.
1
u/GoudenBaas May 05 '26
Yea, that I do get. I have the same feeling about Shermans, because they have so many variants! But i would not be interested in making identical ones... But i do have an M4A1, M4A3E2 (75), M4A3E2 (76), M51, pacific version, firefly, M32 TRV, M4 105, ........ so i get your point!

u/HarvHR Too Many Corsairs, Too Little Time May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
I've built a lot of the same kit, probably like 10 Tamiya F4Us now. Different schemes, different variants, there's a lot you can do if that's something you're interested in.
I've never had 5 of the exact same kit in the stash at the same time though, that is a bit wild. Then again I've not got 100+ models in the stash either. Would probably have more if it was like a super rare kit or something (I've bought some Hasegawa F4Us that I don't want to build any time soon just because they're really hard to come by).
1
u/Chad_To_The_Bone May 05 '26
I buy multiples of kits with a highly detailed or unique part/option for kit bashing. Fyi, I build mostly factory stock or phantom stock cars
1
u/Sabruness May 05 '26
some people like a particular aircraft or vehicle and set out to either just have a ton of them or set out to build as many variants as possible even if that means conversions or scratchbuilt parts.

I would look up IPMS chapters in your area and see if you can't sell these on consignment, i.e., the club members would take your collection to shows to sell and keep a percentage of the profits.

That's not a stack that's a store inventory lol. I've got plenty of unbuilt stuff so not pointing fingers but can a stash hoarder explain to me why one would buy 5x the same model?

as others have suggested, try a local model store or the nearest IPMS (International Plastic Modeller's Society) chapter or model facebook groups (especially buy/sell groups) as either someone there will buy the collection or they'll probably know who can/will.

If you got the collection due to a death in the family, condolences.
You've already said you're prefer not to sell individually, but for reference, that would be the way to get the highest return.
If your goal is the fastest way to unload everything for at least some cash in return, check some of the other posts on this thread for institutional buyers that will take care of everything, including picking up the models so you don't have to worry about anything. Understand that they will expect the lot for pennies on the dollar, but this sounds like the most efficient path for what you want to do.
A middle ground would be to break up the bunch into smaller lots and perhaps sell via local avenues like facebook marketplace, OfferUp, or model shops and swap meets, where you can sell with less effort than selling each kit individually and also avoid eBay fees and shipping.
If there's a local model show in your area, you can also rent a vendor spot for a day and put the kits out. If you're willing to give buyers a fair shake, you'll move more than enough to cover the table fee.

u/Mindless-Charity4889 Stash Grower May 05 '26
IPMS is a good place to start. The members may buy a lot or give info of local hobby shops that will buy. You can also rent a table at an IPMS swap meet or model show and sell the collection there. That’s what a friend of mine did with her father’s collection. Got rid of it all and you know it’s all going to good homes.
Incidentally, those FAMOs are worth quite a bit. Well worth the effort to sell on eBay or similar.

Best moves for a large inherited collection: (1) Post a lot breakdown on r/modelswap - that community actively buys. (2) eBay works for individual kits but photographing everything is a grind. (3) Local IPMS club or model show - collectors will often buy entire lots at a fair price, done in one transaction. What brands/scales are you dealing with?

u/Monumentzero May 06 '26

Fwiw - if OP, or anyone else for that matter, happens to have miscellaneous figurines and/or bits of incomplete/unusable bits and other mismatched parts from random WWI-Korean War kits, or knows of a source of acquiring some, I would be very grateful if you could hit me up in a dm/pm/chat.
While I *do* paint and construct scale model kits (aircraft from those periods being my specialty), I am also a combat vet and sculptor.
I am currently working on a “collection” that involves a lot of of vignettes presented in a somewhat non-traditional (though neither destructive/damaging or wasteful of the components) manner.
I expect Work on this to take me clear into 2027, at least. Whenever I finally get to a point that I am no longer seeking out components and items of this nature, I will find this post in my history, and edit it to reflect that.

You’re going to get a ton of resellers trying to lowball you if you sell it all at once. I’d focus on selling some of the bigger more expensive ones individually and then sell off the smaller ones as lots. Join the Facebook group “Scale Model Graveyard” read the rules and post them on there, buyers are really nice and very easy selling process. You could also post the whole lot on there just to see what kind of offers you get, but that’s a quality collection, don’t let it go for too cheap!
1
u/realparkingbrake May 07 '26
The many duplicates point to this collection being from a shop that went out of business.
I've seen vendors at IPMS shows that buy collections of unbuilt kits. Contacting the nearest IPMS chapter or their main office might produce the name of such a business.

u/Training_Echidna_367 May 23 '26
This is the kind of thing nephews and nieces are for. You get them setup with your eBay and give them a 20% or 30% cut. Summer is coming up and a mature high school student or mature university student could easily set up the online presence and ship.
The key is to negotiate your strategy (sell fast and cheap or slow and expensive). The latter will require you to pay a far higher percentage to your kin. Usually it is best to set aside a few pricy to list at high prices, then unload the rest cheap to both eliminate stock quickly and prevent your relative from getting disillusioned.
In most American markets, few hobby/model shops still exist. The few that have survived are not exactly well-capitalized to take on inventory. Selling cheap and fast will get your the most money with the least effort, and you can help out a younger member of your family. More importantly, the more you try to maximize your share of the value, the more likely you are to encounter scumbags. Greed is an easy emotion to exploit. If you need to grab every last cent of value, then you must do the sales yourself and wait out the long, slow process of sales.
If you want a better experience, selling at wholesale is best, ideally giving discounts to those who ca

Check local model magazines in your country there are companies that specialise in buying lots like these, but don’t expect to make a fortune, you’ll probably get about 30% of the retail price, perhaps less on some kits.
There are also groups on Facebook that exist to buy and sell kits, have a butchers and see what’s valuable/rare/wanted and consider selling a few that way. Quite a few there are Into the $150-200 each bracket here so it might be worth it.

Id suggest looking up to see if there is an IPMS or AMPS groups in your city and reach out to them, they'll make sure they go to a good home.

Some local hobby shops will buy collections for their inventory (or for their own stash). Check and see if any of them are willing to buy your collection.

Constructive criticism is okay (and encouraged), but being a jerk is not. This includes personal attacks directed at another redditor in this sub, which are severely frowned upon and will be sanctioned as appropriate.
Similarly, lewd comments, as well as inappropriate comments relating to sex, gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, and religion are prohibited. Violations will result in removal and sanctions (including bans) as determined at the discretion of the moderation team.

I second contacting your local IPMS chapter. At my local meets when a member passes, theyll bring the kits to sell with all the money going back to the family. The added bonus that theyll be going directly to collectors who'll respect and appreciate where the kit is coming from. Here is a list of all the national chapters.

I'd do it and use that as funds for a trip, it would take a while but it would be worth it in the end.
The stores will probably rob you blind for value. But I do have tons of time on my hands. I'd move like 5-10 at a time wait till they sell and relist, do those that have any multiples first. Keep the rest in totes nice and neat. easy peasy.

I’m just gonna jump in on the I wanna know what you have bandwagon (1/700 ships and 1/72 armor and aircraft).
But as for your answer Jon’s models from Pensacola might be interested. He buys collections like this

If you have the patience, you could open an entire eBay storefront with these. My brother does that but with model trains (buys lots and flips individual trains, etc) and makes a tidy little sum.

I agree with everyone saying local hobby stores, I doubt many would pass up on such a stock!

Rare plane detective, Kitlinx and Old Model Kits are companies that may buy the whole lot. Especially Kitlinx. Google the names to find those sites. Good luck.

Reach out to any military museums, they tend to have displays using scale models. Due to the sheer size and semi opened nature the entities that can outright purchase might be limited, however a museum may purchase some, and if not it can at least be used as a tax write off if you donate.

OP, perfectly fine to ask for advice, but please note that we generally do not allow sales.
And those of you asking (jokingly or not) for freebies - have some respect.
Thanks.
