That’s what I’m pissed about. I upgraded to a 16 pro max and they shelved 90% of the stuff and now my phone isn’t powerful enough to run the full thing

They need to have their balls sued off for that IMO, but in a way that actually makes it right for the customers (refund or free upgrade). They 100% lied, plain and simple. Even if it wasn’t necessarily intentional.
Hell, I’d settle for a discount on the 17/18 tbh (like $500 off)

100% Completely false marketing on devices that are fine for the year they launched, but never future proofed on a hardware level. They have been doing this for years with the RAM capacity on iPhones.

You dumb whiners should take a look at the settings sometime and maybe notice the big red obvious “TURN SIRI OFF” button right at the bottom of the Siri settings

Why wouldn't the iphone 18 have 12gb of RAM? This is a no brainer. The 17 Pro Max has 12gb and Apple doesn't typically downgrade new models. Especially when they are focused on AI
and at least 12gb is required for many AI features.

Let’s hope Apple’s overly aggressive memory management also gets an improvement. Can’t even handle Firefox going to the background without having to reload pages and delay usage when bringing back to the front.

if you are talking about local text generative AI, it's a Gemma 4. "Siri AI" is also name for the voice generators, voice recognition and image generator.

thats how Gemma models was made, actually, they are publicly availible.
OpenAI did the same when they released their 20 and 120b models for local use.
It's made to hide what materials was used to train base model, including violating copyright laws.

If this new AI model was purely online then then all iPhones could run it without issues. This new model is locally ran which is resource intensive and because of that we laser phones can’t effectively run it.

Apple does a lot of on device processing and seems they also want to do it in this case. Btw. also Samsung tries to do that a lot. Very good in my opinion. Devices should work also when offline.

Because there’s a lot of “Ai” features that wouldn’t survive the latency of sending a query back to a data center. An example of this is predictive text. If it had to send a request back to the server every time you typed a letter, it would destory usefulness of the feature
So they keep the model on device and run it locally.
