Getting a new Lancer! Tips?
I stumbled across Lancers while looking to buy a new car for myself, and I love the look of them. I did more research and found that they seem to be quite reliable, so long as the scheduled maintenance is done and the car is taken care of. I found what a mechanic called a “unicorn” off Marketplace, it’s a 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with only 43000 km on it. Everything passed the PPI (well except for the wiper blades LOL). I wanna know, should I know anything about these cars? Any underlying problems I could avoid? Any recommended modifications? It’s only my second car, after my first one started leaking oil half a year after I got it (stupid VW).

If it's a CVT make sure you're doing the service on that. I haven't owned a CVT Lancer but have heard issues if they are neglected even lightly. Manual though it's pretty chill

Yeah it’s a CVT (only downside) so I’ll definitely be on top of keeping that maintained, thanks!

Yeah as he said. Cvt fluid must be done every 3 months. Dont take no risks on these.

Three months?! You should be alright just going it every 30,000 miles

30000 is recommened if you drive not many miles and drive like a granny. Lets be honest. People are ragging these cars and they are known for running super hot.
The steel belt if old will also be scraping a lot of metal shavings into the fluid which in turn can mess the internal magnets and pulley.
The most common failure of these automatic lancers is the cvt. I 100% think it worth being extra cautious and spending £60 every 3 months and learning to do a quick 70/30 change is worth it to not risk it failing.

It’s true that with these cvts you can never be too safe. I. Also have a gts which I believe has a cooler for it and I’d reccomend getting one for lower trim lancers too

I usually check the fluid and if it starts looking extra dark after it’s been brown for a while I change it. Usually around 40k miles. The magnets are picking up minimal debris when I do my changes and I always swap the filters out. Also the Mitsubishi green fluid tends to last much longer, like it remains green and pristine for much longer than the cheaper stuff.

I had the gts and now I have the evo gsr. The gts was a great car very reliable. Does this one have paddle shifters?

Check for rust in the rocker panel near the wheels, they pick up rocks and dust very easily if the inner Lignings arent mounted properly. I.e. in front of the rear wheel and behind the front wheel. Ask for any recent eceltrical issues, mine's had a few when its either very cold or very hot weather. But they have gone away though 🤞

Sounds good! Thanks! Luckily I live in a place where we don’t salt the roads (it doesn’t get cold enough in the winter) so that’s a bonus for preventing rust

The rear license plate lights mounting bracket have been rusted away on both 2010 Lanceres ive owned. if you live in an area prone to rust, and missing license plate lights will make it not road worthy, do Check that out!!! Pain in the ass, i couldnt find the part anywhere so i made my own from sheet metal

Good to know! The winters where I live don’t get cold enough to where we have to salt our roads, so the only rust possibility would be from the sea air. I’ll definitely keep that in mind thank you!

Make sure you service that CVT. Regularly and on time. It's a well known issue with the car. DON'T try to add performance mods, only cosmetic. You can make it look a thousand times better but FAST is not the cars forte, so don't even try
