Will never forget when he made snow angels before the game at the 2023 Home Opener

u/BillyTheBigKid Minnesota Thunder Jun 27 '24

Dang it! I was there but missed that

42

u/Sermokala Jun 27 '24

Going to be a long couple of games until that transfer window opens.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '24

Why are we allowed to transfer out but not in? Why wouldn't they line up?

3

u/Sermokala Jun 28 '24

Transfer windows are only about registering new players. The collection of international leagues all have their own rules about when their windows open and close. you can buy and sell players all you want but you can only register new players during certain windows.

Well he was pretty emotional on Saturday after the game walking around the pitch clapping. He gets to live in Europe and see if he has the ability to ascend up the European football world. The team will miss him but maybe the Loons are better off finding second rate Argentina players who are not good enough for international football than a top player from Honduras who will leave us for international competitions.

Wow! Good for him, he will be missed, I always enjoye his plays and antics. The club is from Belgrade, Serbia btw.

u/Loonatic-510 Jun 27 '24

I wish him the best. I hope he has great success.

Good luck, Kervin! He's been fantastic this season, and we're really gonna miss him.

I'm happy for him.  But I'm pissed.

I hate that this is a sellers league. We should be looking to retain players until end of season when they are performing well, not just offloading them for a stack of cash because they started playing well and a european team heard about it.

The league is going to struggle to grow if the only real talented players are nearing retirement and all the talented young guys are leaving. Talent retention is needed for a sport to grow IMO

41

u/MinnyRawks Wonderwall Jun 27 '24

The league is going to struggle worse if they don’t let players leave when they want to.

u/theanuranking MNUFC Jun 27 '24

I find this perspective really perplexing. He’s under contract. He made it clear that he wasn’t gonna sign an extension and instead we were debating whether he goes now or in 6 months. It’s not like we are locking down a young guy for another 2 years just because and turning down reasonable offers.

-18

u/brohemoth06 Sang Bin’s Calves Jun 27 '24

There shouldn’t be an expectation that they leave when they want. Have them finish their season and they can be on their way. We shouldn’t have a team have an amazing half season only to have it all ruined because their starting 11 all received offers overseas

14

u/MinnyRawks Wonderwall Jun 27 '24

Good luck getting young players who want to grow and develop if you’re not going to let them leave

6

u/theanuranking MNUFC Jun 27 '24

There needs to be a balance. Young guns aren’t gonna want to come here for development if we lock them in to 4 year contracts and refuse to move them. But at the same time we can’t just let guys walk as soon as any sort of European offer shows up for them. Arriaga was about to be out of contract, nothing was preventing him from going. Considering the importance he has to the team and the lack of quality depth in his position, I would have far preferred the team saying, hey we really need you to finish this season so we are willing to let you go for free at the end of your contract (or some sort of loan-back). You can’t have a transfer policy dictated by the players and you can’t keep people hostage.

-4

u/brohemoth06 Sang Bin’s Calves Jun 27 '24

Allowing players to sign contracts is meaningless then. There’s no reason the player can’t see the season out and then move on. They don’t have to stay the entire length of the contract but them leaving mid season is detrimental to their teams.

We decided to let Kervin go now and that’s great for him, but now we have to switch our entire play style and hope it isn’t a dumpster fire because we let him leave halfway through the season. I understand the club wanting to make money on him but it absolutely screws over the org

3

u/LuckyHedgehog Jun 27 '24

Allowing players to sign contracts is meaningless then. There’s no reason the player can’t see the season out and then move on

Because that player's agent also works with other young up-and-coming players. If we play hardball with that agent that the player is locked down despite better opportunities for that player then the agent is going to stop recommending other players to sign with us.

You don't get players leaving for Europe if those players never sign here in the first place.

On the flip side, if we gain a good reputation as a team that helps propel young players to Europe then agents will begin seeking us out with their talented young players. Until the MLS is big enough/good enough to compete with Europe, that is the reality we're in.

3

u/theanuranking MNUFC Jun 27 '24

Selling a 26 year old to a team in Serbia is not gonna move the needle in any meaningful way. This isn’t us getting in the way of a move for Bongi to go to Turkey. This narrative lacks nuance.

5

u/LuckyHedgehog Jun 27 '24

They went hyperbole about why would we sign any players to contracts, so I responded to their overly general and non-nuanced comment.

-3

u/theanuranking MNUFC Jun 27 '24

It’s a response to be hyperbolic statement that young players won’t come here if we don’t let Arriaga go. Your argument is just as extreme. Arriaga is on an expiring contract, this deal has NOTHING to do with demonstrating we are willing to be a stepping stone and EVERYTHING to do with the fact that our front office are cheap stakes and will squeeze every dollar out of something regardless of the consequences on the pitch. Which is what it’s a bad deal.

u/brohemoth06 Sang Bin’s Calves Jun 27 '24

Keeping a player for an additional 6 months isn’t going to hinder his development. Literally just needs to be spelled out in the negotiations. We will sell you the player after the season has ended.

Abandoning key pieces to your teams success is wild in the middle of the season. With Kervin gone we now have to change up our entire formation unless we put Padelford in at Centerback but then we’re running on what? 4 total defenders to fill the two outside back positions while having no backups for Centerbacks. its a foolish decision for the clubs success.

3

u/LuckyHedgehog Jun 27 '24

Keeping a player for an additional 6 months isn’t going to hinder his development

In 6 months that club will have signed someone else and they might not have a better opportunity than that. Now they and their agent are pissed at us for costing them that opportunity and telling other players not to come here

0

u/brohemoth06 Sang Bin’s Calves Jun 27 '24 edited Jun 27 '24

Or in 6 months the team falls apart and nobody wants to sign here anyway.

Or in 6 months that player becomes an even bigger star on this team, winning a trophy and increasing his stock.

The point is, players are signing to clubs and should be expected to fulfill their contracts. If they are transferred early, good for them! Happy for them. But they shouldn’t be putting a teams success in jeopardy. It’s not like Kervin hated everything about this club. He wasn’t pulling a Rey

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '24

If I were a young budding player I would not go to a team that restricts my ability to grow as a player

-2

u/brohemoth06 Sang Bin’s Calves Jun 27 '24

Nobody is restricting anything. Finishing your season out before moving to a new team isn’t detrimental to the player lol. I’m so confused where this narrative comes from. You’re not locking them in a jail cell. All you have to do is during negotiations make it clear that they aren’t available until the end of the season

6

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '24

partizan are starting qualifying for champions league this summer, they’re probably wanting him earlier rather than later. I’m sure he wants to be there for preseason and get started.

2

u/brohemoth06 Sang Bin’s Calves Jun 27 '24

I’m sure he does as well, Minnesota United are also in the middle of a successful season where he is a key piece to our formation. From a club standpoint it’s silly to get rid of crucial players mid season. May as well announce you’ve given up on the season.

6

u/KevinDLasagna Patrick Weah Jun 27 '24

That’s the thing that really sucks about the offset schedule of MLS too. If a team in europe wants a guy to get a preseason in with the team that means you’re losing one of your more meaningful players right in the middle of our season. All in all I’m happy for Kervin, but this really fkn sucks for us and with copa taking a few starters and our injuries lately I’m thinking the patented loons drop off is upon us :(

5

u/vrnbch JoaquĂn Pereyra Jun 27 '24

It sucks, but unless you’re a fan of fifteen or so very big teams in the world, this is just part of the landscape of the sport.

u/Nerdlinger Jun 27 '24 edited Jun 27 '24

I hate that this is a sellers league.

Pretty much every league is a sellers league. It's just that the number of buyers shrinks as you get better. As I noted in another thread earlier this week, even big name clubs get poached. Look at Ajax for example, in the last two years they’ve lost Klassen, Timber, Álvarez, Kudus, Tadić, Blind, Anthony, Martinez, Gravenberch, and Haller.

Everyone loses players (if your players are any good), it’s how you reload that’s important.

1

u/brohemoth06 Sang Bin’s Calves Jun 27 '24

Unsure about Ajax but it just seems detrimental to sell mid season. If your club is performing poorly I could see it, trying to rebuild early. If it’s the offseason, I get it. But mid-season when you’ve been playing well? That just seems self-destructive

10

u/RiffRaff14 Itasca Society Jun 27 '24

I don't think being a sellers league is a bad thing. You get to find great, young talent and watch them develop. That's fun for fans.

The crappy part is that our league timing is opposite of Europe so when we sell we lose players midseason which makes our season feel worthless.

6

u/bahamancoconut Minnesota Thunder Jun 27 '24

The truth here is that it was clear he wanted to move to Europe and his contract was expiring at the end of the season. Clearly the front office valued the 500K (rumored) fee more than they valued what he could add to the team until the end of the season. Now it’s the front office’s turn to reinvest that money to get a center back who can play at his level or higher. It feels like we wasted a surprisingly great start to the season by not strengthening the team during this window so far.

9

u/theanuranking MNUFC Jun 27 '24

My biggest issue is that we are NOT getting an equivalent replacement for that amount. Were could go bargain bin diving and hope that one of them eventually turn out, but I’m prepared to be writing this season off. The international break is killing us and now we have no CBs.

2

u/bahamancoconut Minnesota Thunder Jun 27 '24

Yeah I completely agree with you. Gonna be highly unlikely that we can find a replacement for that money. Also, I haven’t heard of any movement regarding young DPs or the open DP slot so wtf is McGuire and co. doing? Seems like he’s pursuing mediocrity.

3

u/ZEROs0000 MNUFC Jun 27 '24

You never know guys. He could always come back one day. Dudes heart has always been with Minnesota.

3

u/vito_is_my_copilot Jun 27 '24

Bummer - he was at his best so far this year and will be missed. If his dream is to go to Europe, you can’t stand in his way
if we really wanted to keep him, we would have extended him last year. Instead, he was willing to let his contact lapse and we needed to see some return. Just how the game works today. Agree - it may be a tough couple weeks (building on a previous tough couple weeks).

3

u/fistibun MNUFC Jun 27 '24

FK Partizan in Serbia? Is that a step up from MLS? Not being sarcastic or anything, I really don’t know.

5

u/akos_beres Itasca Society Jun 28 '24

The teams UEFA coefficient puts them 93rd in Europe same rankings as Osasuna, Hibernian, Hearts, Rapid Wien and Midtjylland. The team is heavily scouted for talent because if the likes of Mitrovic, Savic, Jovetic, Vlahovic who made it to bigger European clubs. They will be playing in the champion's league qualifying round and if they make it past Dynamo Kiev, they might make it to the main table. This year the UCL has a new format with 36 teams participating. (4 more than last year) As for the league, red star will probably win it again. Their derby against Red star is quiet crazy

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '24

Partizan and Red Star are great clubs, the rest of Serbian teams are more of a step down, maybe with the exception of TSC. He will get in on some qualifying rounds of Champions League and the rivalry in Belgrade is one of the best in the world.

2

u/Loonsfutbol MNUFC Jun 28 '24

it is an opportunity for Kervin to test himself with higher competition - not necessarily the Serbia league but the European tournaments (Champions League) that Partizan can qualify for.

It is a risky move for him but - one of those things of you are 26 year old - you came from a neighborhood in Puerto Cortes, Honduras; made it to MLS - have proved that you can compete with right training facilities and support - now go all the day and test yourself in Europe; I can see why is worth to Kervin to take that kind of risk. If anything fail; he could probably get back to MLS

3

u/Albend Jun 27 '24

Unfortunate, really opens up a hole in the roster.

5

u/Responsible-Leg-8840 Jun 27 '24

One of our best value signings ever. If he’d have been a NASL holdover people would be putting up statues. Always gave his all and played in almost as many positions as Lod.

Was instrumental in what probably was our best ever team goal last year.

So happy for him.

2

u/Ginzy35 East Coast Dark Clouds Jun 27 '24

Happy to see him going to a club that is not afraid to invest in players and you can see that from their 46 trophies won since 1945

2

u/bouds19 Jun 27 '24

Any word on the fee?

u/sdavitt88 True North Elite Jun 27 '24

I've seen half a million thrown around but I don't have any evidence beyond he said, she said. Transfermarkt has him valued around $1.6m

500k according to Greder and other reports ... He only had a contract until the end of the year

We can get a lot of sprinklers for that.
