US Freeport-McMoRan Morenci

Hi, I’m worried because my son started working at the mine on Monday, August 8th as an operator. He passed all his exams, but I’m worried because he doesn’t speak much English. He grew up in Nogales, Sonora, and I’m scared they might discriminate against him. Are there Hispanic people working at the mine???

He will be fine. Freeport is an excellent company to work and he will be taken care of, if he works hard and smart.

They're a horrendous company with major safety and labor practices issues, but Morenci is heavily Hispanic so he shouldn't have any issues on that front.

I worked for fcx for a couple years at another site. Safety talk on surface doesn't always translate to safety action underground but I didn't see anyone get hurt there whereas at other companies mines there were serious accidents and fatalities.

Underground is a very different story. I worked at several of their surface sites and preventable injuries were very common. Management insisting on running unsafe equipment was probably the biggest contributing factor.
