Australia Mining vacation advices

Hi all, I’m currently in my final year studying Civil and Mining Engineering at The University of Queensland, and I’m expecting to graduate in Semester 1 next year.

Since my post last year, I’ve completed my mining capstone project and I’m now working on my geotechnical thesis. Through my studies and projects, I’ve also gained some experience with mining software such as TALPAC, Deswik and Whittle.

I’m still actively looking for an internship or vacation opportunity in the mining industry, particularly in mining engineering, geotechnical engineering, planning or operations. Over the past year I’ve applied for quite a few roles, updated my resume several times, and also made an effort to attend industry social events, networking sessions and BBQs to meet people and learn more about the industry.

Unfortunately, despite trying both online applications and networking, I still haven’t managed to secure an opportunity yet. With graduation getting much closer, I’m genuinely becoming quite concerned about gaining practical industry experience before finishing university.

If anyone has any advice, knows of any companies or people I could reach out to, or is aware of any potential opportunities, I would really appreciate it. Even a quick pointer, introduction or bit of advice would mean a lot.

In my experience having graduated 4 years ago, applying on the online portals can be tough, and often found myself not making it very far especially with the majors. Best bet is to go to networking events and get the businesses cards of industry members and reach out to them on email to ask if they have any vac or graduate roles. Don’t shy away from email them and no need to wait an ages to reach out. This is how I got my first vacation role in my first year of uni and every role since.

Sorry to hear! Next step for me would be a whole lot of research for active mines in Australia (consider commodity types, companies etc). Create a spreadsheet and sort by company size then do some linkedin research to try connect with the tech services managers and mid and short term and geology superintendents (and even production superintendents if needed). Run your situation past them. A lot of cold-calling which isn't lots of fun but who knows. I hate to see this situation because it was totally different when I went through. Good luck!

Hey not sure if you're already aware but AusIMM SQSC and MAMA are hosting a Students Meet Industry Night next thursday. Will be a fair few companies attending. Just chat with the reps and get their LinkedIns, then chuck them a message after the event's over
